The 19 examples below show how wildlife attractions combine photography and video with ticket paths, opening times, maps, conservation stories, memberships, donations and mobile-friendly navigation. Use them as a design brief for a zoo, sanctuary, safari park or petting-zoo site rather than as a gallery of attractive homepages.
How to judge a zoo website design
A useful comparison needs more than visual appeal. Each example can be assessed on five visitor-facing questions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Visual impact: Does the hero image, video, color system and typography communicate the animals and atmosphere immediately?
- Conversion clarity: Can a visitor find tickets, memberships, donations, sponsorships or the shop without hunting?
- Trip-planning utility: Are opening times, routes, maps, booking details and animal availability easy to locate?
- Engagement and education: Does the site support animal discovery, conservation, research, events, testimonials or social content?
- Navigation quality: Do search, sticky headers, mega menus, card grids, sliders and mobile layouts reduce effort instead of adding decoration?
The roundup published by Colorlib on September 10, 2026 supplies the 19 examples and their distinguishing patterns. A FounderJar roundup updated February 11, 2024 corroborates recurring approaches such as parallax, video heroes, ticket calls to action, event calendars, maps and donation buttons. Website designs change frequently, so treat any implementation detail as a snapshot rather than a permanent specification.

Detailed design lessons from each example
1. Wellington Zoo: make several offers visible at once
Wellington Zoo uses vivid tiles, bold type, quality imagery and colorful backgrounds to establish a friendly, energetic identity. An Instagram grid adds a stream of recent content, while a hero slider surfaces several offers instead of forcing one campaign to do all the work. The lesson is to give the homepage a clear priority while still exposing secondary reasons to visit, such as events, memberships or seasonal experiences. Keep each slide concise, label the action plainly and make the controls usable with a keyboard and on a small screen.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Edinburgh Zoo: turn irregular shapes into a repeatable system
Edinburgh Zoo demonstrates how irregular shapes can become a recognizable visual language rather than a one-off flourish. Sliders provide routes to membership, donations and the shop. If you borrow this approach, define a small set of shape components, spacing rules and contrast requirements first. Decorative edges should never cut into a heading, hide a focus indicator or make a button difficult to tap.
3. Chester Zoo: connect inspiration to visit preparation
Chester Zoo pairs lively colors and hand-drawn details with practical visit planning, animal discovery and availability information. That combination matters because an inspiring image creates intent, while availability and planning tools answer whether the trip will work on a particular day. Put the operational information close to the relevant animal or experience and show the date or condition that governs availability.
4. Borås Djurpark: let simplicity carry the information
Borås Djurpark uses a simple layout, readable type and icons, then gives the ticket call to action a prominent place. Opening times and accommodation information are also easy to frame as decisions a visitor must make. Background video adds atmosphere without replacing the basic page structure. This is a strong model for a smaller attraction: start with legible content and useful icons, then add motion only where it does not compete with the ticket path.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match5. Jardim Zoológico: remove clutter from high-value actions
Jardim Zoológico presents a clean interface with a smooth image slider, direct ticket and sponsorship actions, and a sticky header. A fixed header is useful when it keeps the primary action available as people scroll, but it should shrink on mobile so it does not consume the screen. Sponsorship deserves its own explanation of what support funds; do not make it look like an unexplained checkout button.
6. Zoo Antwerpen: use video to establish mood, then simplify
Zoo Antwerpen leads with video, a clear call to action and a simple homepage. Card-based news content gives returning visitors a place to find current information without changing the core navigation. Compress video, provide a poster image and respect reduced-motion preferences so the page remains usable on slow connections and for visitors who disable animation.
7. Sedgwick County Zoo: balance immersion with planning
Sedgwick County Zoo combines a full-screen hero or video treatment with parallax and hover effects, social links, visit planning and membership paths. The useful pattern is the balance: atmospheric content attracts attention, while planning and membership links remain available. Keep parallax layers shallow, avoid hover-only meaning on touch devices and ensure the same information is reachable through ordinary links.
8. Oklahoma City Zoo: present a large collection as an experience
Oklahoma City Zoo uses high-quality video, strong typography, visual hierarchy and booking functionality to frame a large collection as an immersive destination. When an attraction has many habitats or experiences, group them into understandable journeys rather than presenting an undifferentiated inventory. A booking button should state what is being booked and lead to a short, predictable flow.

Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
9. Bronx Zoo: combine scale with obvious choices
The Bronx Zoo example relies on large typography and imagery, sticky navigation, card menus, slider-based calls to action and testimonial content. Large type can make a family-oriented site feel confident, but the hierarchy must still distinguish a ticket from an editorial story. Testimonials work best when they support a decision and identify the context, rather than interrupting the primary navigation.
10. Apenheul: build utility into the brand
Apenheul uses orange-led branding, card carousels, brush-stroke separators, a mega navigation, social integration and quick routes for tickets, search, contact and directions. Its lesson is that practical links can be part of the brand system. Keep labels literal, provide a visible search field or search control, and test mega menus with keyboard navigation, focus trapping and a clear mobile alternative.
11. Taronga: clarify multiple destinations
Taronga keeps content uncluttered while supporting search, donations, temporary notices and accommodation information. Its split-screen presentation of two zoos helps visitors understand that the organization has more than one destination. If you operate multiple sites, ask visitors to choose a location early, then preserve that choice in the page title, ticket link, map and opening information.
12. Zoo Berlin: make the most requested facts one tap away
Zoo Berlin uses square quick-action menus for directions, tickets, opening times and other visit details. Colorful backgrounds, a sticky menu and hover effects add personality around those practical controls. This pattern is especially effective on a phone: a compact action grid can outperform a long dropdown. Use descriptive text as well as icons, because a symbol that seems obvious to staff may be ambiguous to a first-time visitor.
13. Zoo København: give conservation equal design weight
Zoo København combines a clean modern interface with conservation and research content, including breeding and field projects. A green-and-orange palette, rounded buttons, icons, sliders and sticky navigation support the storytelling. Conservation pages should explain the work in plain language, identify the project or species, and show how a visitor can learn, donate or participate without implying that a ticket purchase alone solves the problem.
14. Columbus Zoo: organize what is happening next
Columbus Zoo uses an image-led carousel, a mega menu, card layouts and horizontally arranged event content. Event modules should answer the basic questions immediately: what is happening, when, where and who it suits. Use consistent date formatting and a clear route to booking or more details. Horizontal layouts need a mobile fallback that does not require precision swiping.
15. Nyíregyháza Zoo: communicate destination scale
Nyíregyháza Zoo uses an animal-video compilation, diagonal section shapes and a large collection framed as a destination experience. This approach is useful when travel time and the breadth of the visit are part of the decision. Show enough structure around the spectacle to help visitors estimate a day: group attractions, provide orientation and link to practical planning rather than leaving the video to carry the entire message.
16. Zoos Victoria: separate locations without fragmenting the organization
Zoos Victoria clearly separates three zoo locations, supplies descriptive calls to action, provides ticket access and foregrounds its conservation mission. A location selector should remain understandable even when a visitor arrives through a search result on a deep page. Use consistent terminology and visual cues across locations so the organization feels unified while each zoo retains its own visit information.

17. Honolulu Zoo: use restraint for a strong visual identity
Honolulu Zoo uses a clean stretched layout, bold type, large visual elements and a dark visual treatment. Dark interfaces can make animal photography feel dramatic, but text contrast, link states and form controls need explicit testing. Keep body copy comfortably readable and avoid placing essential information over a busy photograph.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
18. Pairi Daiza: turn scrolling into a guided story
Pairi Daiza presents a full-screen image sequence with a call to action, a headline, a scroll-linked timeline, a mega menu, off-canvas navigation and overlapping elements. A timeline can explain a sequence of habitats, seasons or conservation milestones. Provide a non-animated reading order and ordinary links so visitors using assistive technology or reduced motion receive the same content.
19. John Ball Zoo: design for families who need orientation
John Ball Zoo uses a vibrant family-oriented design with an interactive map, prominent ticket and visit calls to action, animal profiles and educational content. An interactive map should have a list or search alternative, identify accessible routes where relevant and remain usable when location services are unavailable. Animal profiles can serve both trip planning and learning when they include habitat location, facts and related experiences.
How to turn the patterns into a zoo website plan
1. Define the visitor jobs
List the tasks your site must support before choosing colors or effects. Typical jobs are buying a day ticket, checking opening times, finding a route, seeing which animals or experiences are available, booking a timed activity, becoming a member, donating, sponsoring an animal, finding an event and learning about conservation. Rank them by frequency and urgency, then put the highest-priority tasks in the header or first screen.

2. Build a page architecture
A practical structure usually includes Visit, Tickets, What to see, Events, Learn or Conservation, Membership, Support us, News and Contact. A multi-location organization also needs a location selector and separate opening, map and ticket information for each site. Keep labels familiar; creative names can be used as supporting copy, not as the only way to find a critical page.
3. Choose a publishing route that fits the team
Colorlib presents Wix and Squarespace as practical website-builder routes and identifies examples made with those platforms. The FounderJar roundup also labels zoo examples using Wix, Squarespace, WordPress, Webflow, Elementor, WooCommerce and Unbounce. The right choice depends on who will update events, prices, animal availability and notices. Confirm current feature limits, accessibility controls, multilingual support, ticketing integrations and official partner terms before committing; those details and any affiliate arrangements can change.
4. Design the conversion paths
Give each commercial or support action a clear destination. A ticket button should open the correct date and location; a membership link should explain benefits and renewal terms; a donation or sponsorship path should state what the contribution supports; and a shop link should not compete with urgent visit information. Use one primary label consistently instead of alternating between Buy now, Plan your visit and Get tickets for the same destination.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
5. Create an image and video system
Prepare image crops for hero, card, social and mobile contexts. Add descriptive alternative text when an image conveys information and empty alternative text when it is purely decorative. Serve responsive sizes, compress video, provide captions where speech exists and include a still-image fallback. Never let an autoplay background be the only way to understand a promotion or animal story.
6. Make interaction optional
Sliders, hover states, parallax, scroll-linked timelines and off-canvas menus can support orientation and storytelling. They become harmful when they hide a ticket link, move content unexpectedly, block keyboard focus or require a pointer. Provide pause or previous-next controls for carousels, visible focus styles, touch-friendly targets and a reduced-motion mode.
7. Add operational content workflows
Assign an owner and review date to opening times, closures, animal availability, event listings, prices, route information and temporary notices. A beautiful page with yesterday’s hours creates more frustration than a plain page with accurate information. Display the relevant date or last-updated context when conditions can change.
8. Test on the conditions visitors actually use
Check the homepage and ticket path on a small phone, a large phone, a tablet and a desktop. Test keyboard-only navigation, screen-reader headings, color contrast, zoom, reduced motion, slow mobile data and a browser with scripting restricted. Ask someone unfamiliar with the zoo to find tickets, opening times, a map and one conservation story; record where they hesitate instead of explaining the interface to them.

Common mistakes and practical fixes
Beauty before orientation
A full-screen video or carousel can delay the answer to the visitor’s first question. Put the primary action and a concise description in the first viewport, then let the visual treatment support it.
Hidden or ambiguous tickets
If the ticket link appears only in a menu, changes label between pages or defaults to the wrong location, visitors lose confidence. Use a consistent label and confirm the selected date and zoo before payment.

Motion that blocks access
Parallax and hover effects can cause dizziness, keyboard traps or unreadable overlays. Respect reduced-motion preferences and make every interactive element operable without a pointer.
Out-of-date operational details
Animal availability, opening hours and temporary closures change. Assign ownership, show update context where useful and place urgent notices near the ticket decision.
Mobile layouts treated as an afterthought
Dense mega menus, horizontal event rows and tiny map controls often fail on phones. Replace them with stacked cards, concise action grids, searchable lists and a map alternative that works without precise gestures.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Conservation reduced to a slogan
A mission statement has more value when it connects to specific breeding, field or research projects and gives visitors a credible next action. Explain the work without promising outcomes that the page cannot substantiate.
What the examples collectively show
The best zoo website design is not one visual style. It is a clear relationship between emotion and utility: vivid photography or video earns attention, while tickets, times, routes, availability and booking tools convert that attention into a workable visit. Strong sites also give people reasons to return through events, membership, education, conservation updates and social content. Choose the visual language that fits your animals and audience, but keep the information architecture, accessibility and operational accuracy non-negotiable.
