Bugzilla, MantisBT, Trac, Roundup, and Flyspray are aimed at software defects; Zammad, osTicket, Znuny, OpenSupports, FlowInquiry, and Qisutu are closer to service desks; OpenProject, Plane, Redmine, Phorge, and Fossil cover broader project, code, or collaboration work. Request Tracker and Eventum sit between those models with mature, flexible workflows.
All 19 systems below are free and open-source software that can be run on Linux. “Free” does not mean zero operating cost: you still need a server, storage, backups, upgrades, security maintenance, and—depending on the product—external mail, database, or authentication services. Use the workflow guide first, then verify the current installation, license, and edition details before committing.

What a Linux issue tracker actually does
An issue tracker keeps a structured list of work that must be investigated, assigned, discussed, updated, and closed. A software bug tracker usually emphasizes reproducibility, severity, versions, components, and developer ownership. A help-desk or service-desk system emphasizes request intake, queues, agents, customer communication, service-level targets, and escalation. Project platforms add roadmaps, dependencies, schedules, and cross-team planning.
That distinction matters more than the interface. A defect-oriented system can be excellent for an engineering team and awkward for public support requests. A help desk can handle customer conversations well but lack the fields and history developers expect for a regression. A project manager may provide attractive boards and timelines without the detailed triage model needed for a large bug database.

Best choices for software bugs and development tickets
Bugzilla
Bugzilla is the most natural choice when the central problem is defect triage rather than customer conversation. Its web-based model fits teams that need a durable record of software problems, ownership, and status. Before choosing it, map your existing severity, component, version, and release conventions to its current configuration and confirm that your Linux deployment and authentication plan are supported.
MantisBT
MantisBT is a PHP issue tracker backed by MySQL. That familiar web-stack profile can suit an organization that already operates PHP and MySQL applications. It is a sensible bug-first candidate when you want a conventional defect database rather than a full project-planning suite. Validate the supported PHP, database, and web-server versions before production installation, because those requirements determine the maintenance burden.
Trac
Trac is a focused issue tracker for development work. Its narrower scope can be an advantage when a team wants tickets without adopting a broad portfolio-management system. Treat it as a development workflow decision: define how code changes reference issues, how releases are represented, and where documentation will live before importing historical tickets.
Roundup
Roundup is described as simple to use and install. That makes it attractive for a small engineering group that values a low-friction tracker and does not need a large service catalog. Its simplicity should be tested against your future needs: check permission roles, notification behavior, search, export, and upgrade procedures before the issue database becomes a critical system.
Flyspray
Flyspray is a simple web-based PHP bug tracker. It belongs on a shortlist when defect reporting is the primary workflow and a lightweight PHP application is preferable to a larger project platform. Confirm the current PHP and database requirements, then test attachments, mail delivery, and backup restoration with representative bug records.
Fossil
Fossil combines distributed version control, bug tracking, and a wiki server. That integrated approach is useful when the team wants source history, technical notes, and issues to remain closely related instead of being split across separate services. It is less compelling if your organization needs a multi-queue customer help desk or extensive service-level management; those requirements point to another group in this list.

Phorge
Phorge is a community-maintained fork of Phabricator. It is aimed at development collaboration rather than a basic public help desk, so evaluate it with your code-review, task, and repository processes in mind. Pay particular attention to the project’s current installation guidance, maintenance activity, authentication integration, and migration tooling before making it the center of an engineering workflow.
Best choices for help desks and service operations
Zammad
Zammad is a web-based, open-source helpdesk and customer-support system. Choose it when requests arrive from people outside the engineering team and agents need a shared queue, customer context, and consistent handling process. During evaluation, model your real intake channels and escalation rules, then verify mail, user authentication, permissions, reporting, backups, and data-retention behavior.
osTicket
osTicket is a customer-support ticket system. It fits organizations that need to turn incoming questions or incidents into assignable tickets without adopting a full project-management environment. Test the complete path from request submission through assignment, internal notes, customer replies, closure, and reopening. A successful demonstration should also include spam controls, attachment handling, and an export or restore test.
Znuny
Znuny is a fork of OTRS and is intended for structured service-desk work. It is worth considering when your process has multiple queues, defined agent responsibilities, escalations, and formal operating procedures. The key decision is not whether it can create tickets, but whether your team is prepared to administer a mature service platform and keep its workflow configuration documented.
FlowInquiry
FlowInquiry combines tickets with workflows and SLA tracking. That makes it a candidate when response or resolution targets are central to the service operation. Document each service target, calendar, priority rule, and escalation path before testing. Confirm how the current edition records SLA events and what reporting is available, because a workflow label alone does not guarantee the measurement detail your managers need.

OpenSupports
OpenSupports is a simple ticketing system. Its positioning suits a small support function that wants a clear request-and-response process without the complexity of a broad enterprise service desk. Keep the evaluation practical: verify the number of agents and queues you need, customer notifications, access controls, file handling, and whether upgrades preserve your ticket history.

Qisutu
Qisutu provides straightforward ticket management for teams and support workflows. It belongs on a shortlist when you need a defined support process but want to avoid unnecessary project-planning features. Use a pilot to test intake, assignment, status transitions, search, notifications, and reporting with actual support scenarios rather than a single sample ticket.
Best choices for projects, roadmaps, and cross-team planning
OpenProject
OpenProject is a collaborative project-management platform for planning and tracking. It is the broadest fit in this roundup when issues are only one part of a larger delivery system. An October 2, 2026 comparison describes OpenProject as closest to Jira in scope and lists its Community edition as GPLv3, with an Enterprise add-on. Treat that edition boundary as a deployment question: verify which authentication, reporting, or administrative capabilities are included in the edition you plan to run.
Plane
Plane is a modern project-management system organized around issues, cycles, and roadmaps. The same October 2, 2026 comparison characterizes it as the closest in interface to a modern tracker and lists the Community edition under AGPL-3.0. It is a good candidate for teams that want a contemporary planning experience while retaining self-hosting control. Confirm current Community-versus-paid feature boundaries, import options, and upgrade procedures before migrating an active backlog.

Redmine is a flexible project-management web application. The October 2, 2026 comparison lists it as GPLv2 and describes its plugin ecosystem as the deepest among the compared options. That breadth can solve unusual workflow requirements, but every plugin adds compatibility and maintenance decisions. Establish a supported core version, a plugin inventory, a backup plan, and a staging upgrade process before production use.
Pachno
Pachno is positioned as friendly issue tracking. Consider it when the team wants a general-purpose tracker that is approachable for contributors who are not dedicated project administrators. Define the minimum workflow first—intake, ownership, priorities, due dates, notifications, and closure—and then check that the current release handles those steps without customizations you cannot maintain.
Request Tracker
Request Tracker is described as mature, enterprise-grade issue tracking. It is a strong direction when ticket workflows, permissions, and long-term operational control matter more than a minimalist interface. Before adoption, document every queue, role, notification, and escalation rule. Mature systems reward careful configuration but can become difficult to operate when undocumented local changes accumulate.

Eventum
Eventum is described as a user-friendly and flexible issue tracker. Its balance makes it suitable for teams that need more adaptable handling than a tiny bug tracker provides but do not necessarily need a complete project portfolio suite. Test the workflow with several issue types and user roles, and verify integration, export, and restore behavior before relying on it for operational history.
Choose by workflow, not by feature count
- Choose a bug-first tracker when defect triage, reproducibility, versions, components, and developer ownership are more important than customer conversations. Start with Bugzilla, MantisBT, Trac, Roundup, or Flyspray.
- Choose a help-desk or service-desk system when external request intake, queues, service targets, and agent workflows are central. Start with Zammad, osTicket, Znuny, OpenSupports, FlowInquiry, or Qisutu.
- Choose a project-management platform when roadmaps, dependencies, schedules, budgets, or cross-team planning must live alongside issues. Start with OpenProject, Plane, or Redmine.
- Choose a development-collaboration tool when repository history, documentation, and task discussion should stay together. Fossil and Phorge are the most direct fits in this roundup.
- Choose a mature, flexible workflow engine when your organization already has complex queues, permissions, and escalation rules. Request Tracker and Eventum deserve closer evaluation.
Do not select by screenshots alone. Write down who creates an issue, which fields are mandatory, who can see it, how it is prioritized, what closes it, and what evidence must remain for audits or later debugging. Then run that same scenario in two or three candidates.
Self-hosting, licensing, and ownership
Self-hosting can support data-control, residency, and customization goals, but it transfers responsibility to your team. You own operating-system patching, application upgrades, database maintenance, TLS certificates, access control, monitoring, backups, restore tests, and incident response. A Linux VPS for issue tracking can be economical, while managed self-hosting reduces routine administration; either way, clarify who is responsible for the application and data.
“Open source” and “free” also have several meanings. The software license may allow self-hosting without a subscription, while hosted tiers, enterprise add-ons, support contracts, or advanced authentication remain commercial. The October 2, 2026 comparison gives these examples:
| Product | License or edition detail reported in the comparison | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Plane | AGPL-3.0 Community | Verify which capabilities are included in Community before deployment. |
| OpenProject | GPLv3 Community with an Enterprise add-on | Check whether required administration or collaboration features depend on the add-on. |
| Redmine | GPLv2 | Assess plugin compatibility and the maintenance cost of a customized installation. |
License labels are not a substitute for reading the current project terms. Confirm the exact release license, contributor notices, included dependencies, and any distinction between a community edition and hosted or enterprise offerings.

- Define the workflow. Record intake channels, issue types, required fields, priorities, assignments, escalation rules, and closure criteria.
- Confirm Linux requirements. Check the current installation instructions, supported distribution, runtime versions, database engine, web server, storage needs, and background services.
- Map identity and permissions. Decide whether users authenticate locally, through an existing directory, or through single sign-on. Verify which option is available in the edition you will run; authentication features can be edition-dependent.
- Test notifications. Send and receive representative mail, confirm reply handling, and verify that agent, requester, and escalation notifications are distinct.
- Plan data movement. Identify import and export formats, attachment handling, user mapping, and the fields that must survive migration.
- Build backup and restore procedures. Back up the application database, attachments, configuration, secrets, and encryption material. Perform a restore on a separate Linux host before go-live.
- Stage upgrades. Maintain a test instance, record the installed version and extensions, and rehearse upgrades there before touching production.
- Measure operations. For a help desk, verify queue and SLA reports. For development, verify search, release or version tracking, and issue history. For projects, verify dependencies, roadmap views, and permissions.
- Set ownership. Assign named maintainers for the server, application, database, backups, security updates, and user administration.
Common failure modes and how to avoid them
Choosing a project board for a support desk
A board may look efficient but still lack requester identity, queue ownership, mail threading, or service-level measurement. If outside users submit most work, test the full customer conversation before choosing a project-oriented product.

Choosing a help desk for engineering triage
A support queue can become an uncomfortable substitute for reproducible bug records. If developers need component, version, regression, and release history, use a bug-first tracker or confirm that the help-desk system can represent those fields and reports without fragile customization.
Ignoring edition boundaries
Community, hosted, and enterprise editions may differ in SSO, reporting, integrations, or administration. Record the exact edition and version in your procurement and deployment notes, and test every must-have feature on that edition rather than assuming the product name guarantees it.
Underestimating upgrades
Plugins, forks, database changes, and custom templates can turn a routine upgrade into a migration project. Keep an inventory of extensions, rehearse restores, and never apply a major upgrade to production without a tested rollback or recovery path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBacking up only the database
Tickets often depend on attachments, configuration, mail settings, secrets, and search indexes. A database dump that cannot recreate the working system is not a complete backup. Document the files and services required for a clean restore and test that procedure on different hardware or a separate virtual machine.
Failing to define ownership
Open-source software removes license fees, not operational work. Decide who patches Linux, monitors disk space, renews certificates, reviews permissions, answers user questions, and restores service after an incident.
Bottom line
For software defects, begin with Bugzilla, MantisBT, Trac, Roundup, or Flyspray. For customer-facing support, begin with Zammad, osTicket, Znuny, OpenSupports, FlowInquiry, or Qisutu. For roadmaps and cross-team delivery, compare OpenProject, Plane, and Redmine; for code-centered collaboration, examine Fossil and Phorge; for mature ticket workflows, evaluate Request Tracker and Eventum. The right Linux issue tracker is the one whose workflow, edition, upgrade path, and recovery plan match the work your team actually performs.
