18 Urban Personal Vehicles Changing City Travel—From E‑Bikes to Microcars

There is no single best personal vehicle for every city trip. For most people, a conventional bicycle or commuter e-bike covers the widest range of short journeys; a cargo e-bike can replace many family-car errands; scooters and boards suit light, compact trips; and a microcar trades maneuverability and parking space for weather protection. The right choice depends on distance, hills, loads, storage, physical ability, weather and the roads your local law permits.

The U.S. Department of Transportation uses “micromobility” for “any small, low-speed, human or electric-powered transportation device, including bicycles, scooters, electric-assist bicycles (e-bikes), electric scooters (e-scooters), and other small, lightweight, wheeled conveyances.” The 18 options below apply that idea to real urban travel, including shared access as a service rather than as an owned vehicle.

What to compare before choosing a city vehicle

Door-to-door time matters more than a vehicle’s advertised top speed. A bicycle that can use a direct route and avoid parking may beat a faster vehicle that must queue in traffic or search for a space. Compare the complete trip: walking to the vehicle, unlocking it, loading, charging, riding, parking and securing it.

  • Trip pattern: estimate your normal one-way distance, hills, stop frequency and whether you need to carry groceries, children, tools or luggage.
  • Speed and range: manufacturer ranges vary with rider weight, temperature, hills, tire pressure and assistance level. Treat published range as a planning estimate, not a guarantee.
  • Human effort and accessibility: pedal vehicles require balance and some exertion; throttled vehicles reduce effort but add battery weight and charging dependence. Step-through frames, seats, three wheels and ramps can matter more than speed.
  • Weather and storage: an enclosed cabin protects occupants but needs more road and parking space. A folding or standing vehicle is easier to bring indoors but offers little rain or crash protection.
  • Energy and upkeep: bicycles need no charging, while electric models need a compatible charger, a safe place to charge and eventual battery replacement. Tires, brakes, chains, suspension and lights are wear items on nearly all of them.
  • Law and exposure: speed classes, helmets, insurance, registration, lighting, permitted roads, sidewalk rules and parking vary by jurisdiction. Check the current rules where you will ride before buying.

Prices are not directly comparable across this category: model specifications, battery size, certification and local taxes create large differences, and no single purchase or running-cost figure applies to all 18 vehicles.

18 personal vehicles for urban travel

1. Standard bicycle

A conventional bicycle is the simplest option for short and medium trips, typically a few to roughly 15 kilometres each way for a reasonably fit rider. It has effectively unlimited range as long as you can keep pedaling, no charging cost and a small storage footprint. Door-to-door speed is often competitive with cars on congested streets because a bicycle can use cycleways and park close to the destination.

The trade-offs are physical effort, exposure to rain and heat, limited carrying capacity and crash risk when routes lack protected space. A lock, lights, reflective equipment and a secure indoor or covered parking point are essential. Local law usually treats it as a bicycle, but equipment and road-use requirements still differ.

2. Folding bicycle

A folding bicycle targets commuters who combine cycling with rail, bus or a small apartment. Wheel size and gearing make some folders lively in traffic and others better for relaxed riding; a realistic use case is a short to medium urban journey with a final walking or transit leg. Folding reduces the storage footprint and can make theft less likely when the bike can come indoors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Small wheels can feel less stable on potholes, and the folding hinges require inspection. Carrying capacity is usually modest unless you add a rack or trailer. It has no charging requirement, but the rider supplies all propulsion and weather protection remains minimal.

3. Commuter e-bike

For many households, a pedal-assist commuter e-bike is the most versatile car-trip substitute. Assistance flattens hills and reduces sweat while preserving bicycle-sized access and parking. Germany recorded 12.2 million e-bikes in private households in 2023, and the German Environment Agency says e-bikes can be the fastest urban mode for trips up to about 7.5 km.

Expect practical city ranges from one ride to several days between charges, depending on battery and assistance settings; verify the exact figure for your model. A rack and panniers handle daily shopping, but heavy loads call for a cargo design. Battery charging, theft protection and local definitions of permitted assistance speed are the main ownership issues.

4. Speed-pedelec

A speed-pedelec is a faster pedal-assist bicycle intended for longer commutes and open routes. It can reduce travel time on 10-to-30-kilometre journeys, but its higher assisted speed commonly moves it into a different legal class from an ordinary e-bike. That may mean registration, insurance, a helmet standard, restricted cycleway access or minimum-age rules, depending on the jurisdiction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It needs more braking distance and careful route selection than a standard e-bike. Range and charging are similar to other electric bicycles, while purchase, insurance and maintenance costs are usually higher because components must manage greater speed and loads.

5. Electric cargo bike

An electric cargo bike carries children, groceries, parcels or work equipment in a front box, rear platform or long-tail frame. It can replace a car for school runs and local deliveries, often over roughly 2 to 15 kilometres each way. The motor makes heavy starts and hills manageable, but the bicycle is longer, heavier and more expensive than a commuter e-bike.

New York City’s cargo-bike pilot was described by the U.S. Department of Transportation as largely successful in reducing congestion and improving last-mile-delivery safety. Plan for secure, weather-protected parking, wider turning space and a charging point. Load limits, child-seat compatibility, lights and brake capacity must be checked against the exact model.

6. Electric tricycle

An electric tricycle adds stability and a low step-over height, making it useful for riders who are uncomfortable balancing on two wheels or who need a large rear basket. It suits short to medium errands at bicycle-like urban speeds. Three wheels can make starts and stops easier, but turning geometry requires practice and a wider path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage and transport are harder than with a bicycle, and uneven slopes can affect stability. Charging is straightforward, but the extra motor, controller and differential or hub components add maintenance points. Verify whether your local rules classify the trike as a bicycle, an e-bike or another vehicle.

7. Electric moped

An electric moped provides a seated ride with more sustained motor power than a pedal-assist bicycle. It is suited to medium urban trips and faster arterials where permitted, with enough range for repeated errands before charging. It carries more weight than a scooter but generally needs a parking space and stronger security.

Registration, a driving licence, insurance, helmet requirements and road access are jurisdiction-specific. Battery charging can take several hours, and replacement batteries are a significant long-term cost. Its higher mass and speed increase stopping distance and crash consequences compared with bicycles.

8. Electric motorcycle

An electric motorcycle is the closest option in this list to a conventional motor vehicle. It handles longer commutes, steep hills and faster roads, and its enclosed battery eliminates tailpipe emissions while riding. It is not a low-speed micromobility device in every jurisdiction, so motorcycle licensing, registration, insurance and approved parking normally apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Range varies widely with battery size and speed. Fast charging may be available for some models, but access depends on local infrastructure and connector compatibility. Running costs can be lower than fuel for energy, yet tires, brakes, insurance and battery depreciation remain substantial. Crash exposure is closer to that of a motorcycle than a bicycle.

9. Seated electric scooter

A seated electric scooter combines a compact footprint with a chair-like riding position. It is useful for short trips when standing is uncomfortable, and a small under-seat compartment or rack can carry light shopping. Its small wheels are easy to store but less forgiving of potholes, tram tracks and wet surfaces.

Check whether your jurisdiction treats it as an e-scooter, moped or mobility device; that classification controls speed, registration, helmet and road rules. Charging is usually from a household outlet, and solid or pneumatic tires, brakes and steering bearings need regular inspection.

10. Standing e-scooter

A standing e-scooter is optimized for short, low-load journeys and first- or last-mile links. It is light enough to carry into an office or train and takes little floor space. Real-world door-to-door speed depends heavily on legal speed limits, surface quality, pedestrian interactions and parking rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safety trade-off is material. Germany recorded 11,944 e-scooter crashes involving personal injury in 2024, including 27 deaths and 1,513 serious injuries. Those figures are German statistics, not a worldwide rate, but they show why helmet use where appropriate, visible lighting, sober riding, slower cornering and careful avoidance of damaged surfaces matter. The same country recorded 1.4 million e-scooters in private households in 2023, while French authorities reported 2.5 million EDPM owners in 2024 versus 640,000 in 2020, a 290% increase.

11. Electric unicycle

An electric unicycle uses a single motorized wheel controlled by the rider’s weight and balance. Experienced users can cover short urban trips while carrying the device indoors, and the footprint is exceptionally small. It requires a learning period, protective equipment and a route with smooth surfaces.

There is no seat, cargo capacity or weather protection. A fall can be abrupt, and local law may prohibit it from roads, sidewalks or cycleways. Battery size determines range, while tire, pedal and control-board damage can require specialist repair.

12. Electric skateboard

An electric skateboard is compact and quick for short commutes on smooth pavement. It can be carried into buildings and charged from a small power supply. Balance, braking technique and surface awareness are critical; rain, gravel and expansion joints create disproportionate risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Most boards carry little beyond a backpack, have no weather protection and offer limited emergency braking compared with seated vehicles. Classification varies widely, so verify whether public-road use, helmets, lights or insurance are required. Battery charging should occur with the supplied charger on a nonflammable surface.

13. Self-balancing board

A self-balancing board, including two-wheel hoverboard-style designs, is intended for very short trips on private property or controlled paths. It has a tiny storage footprint and no rider pedaling, but its small wheels and automatic balance system are sensitive to cracks, slopes and water.

Range is generally modest and carrying capacity is limited to the rider. Fire-safety certification, charger quality and battery condition are important ownership checks. Many jurisdictions restrict these devices on public roads or sidewalks; confirm legality before riding outside private land.

14. Velomobile

A velomobile encloses a recumbent bicycle rider inside an aerodynamic shell. Human power remains primary, but the streamlined shape can make longer flat-city trips efficient and offers more protection from wind and light rain than an open bicycle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The shell is wider and less visible at intersections, so lights, flags and route selection are important. Storage needs exceed those of a normal bicycle, and repairs to the bodywork can be specialized. Electric-assist versions may fall under different e-bike limits; check local definitions and assistance-speed rules.

15. Recumbent bicycle

A recumbent bicycle places the rider in a supported, reclined seat. It can reduce pressure on wrists and backs and suits steady medium-distance travel on routes with good sightlines. The low seating position may make visibility in mixed traffic harder, and starting on hills takes practice.

It has bicycle-level charging needs—none unless fitted with assistance—and modest carrying capacity that can be increased with panniers or a trailer. Its long frame can be awkward in elevators and bike racks. Legal treatment is usually bicycle-based, but dimensions and lighting requirements still deserve a local check.

16. Mobility scooter

A mobility scooter is designed around accessible seating, stable controls and low-effort travel rather than exercise. It can be the most practical option for riders with limited walking or standing tolerance, especially for local shopping and appointments. Four-wheel models prioritize stability; three-wheel models turn more tightly.

Range, curb-climbing ability, seat support and turning radius should be matched to the actual route. Storage and charging space are substantial, and batteries add weight. Accessibility and road rules differ: some places permit mobility scooters on sidewalks or pedestrian areas while others specify speed, lighting and crossing behavior. Confirm the permitted routes and dimensions before purchase.

17. Electric quadricycle or microcar

An electric quadricycle, sometimes called a microcar, provides a roof, windshield, seats and protection from much of the weather while remaining smaller than a conventional car. It suits short to medium trips with passengers or fragile cargo when a bicycle or scooter is impractical.

The cabin, doors and safety systems increase purchase price, weight, road space and parking demand. Range and charging depend on battery size, and some classes have lower speed limits or restricted roads. Do not assume car-level crash protection; examine the vehicle’s legal category and tested safety equipment in your market.

18. Shared e-bike or scooter access

Shared access is a transportation service, not an owned vehicle. It removes purchase, battery-storage and maintenance responsibilities and works well for occasional one-way trips, transit connections and visitors. The practical vehicle is whatever the local operator deploys, so comfort, range, brakes and availability vary by fleet and day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

U.S. and Canadian shared-bike and shared-scooter systems recorded 157 million trips in 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Costs are usage-based rather than a purchase price, and users must account for unlock fees, per-minute charges, service areas and designated parking. Check the app’s current rules, inspect the vehicle before riding and wear protective equipment appropriate to traffic and speed.

What the adoption numbers show

Electric two- and three-wheelers are no longer a niche experiment. The International Energy Agency reported more than 10 million sold globally in 2024; more than 9% of the worldwide two- and three-wheeler fleet was electric, and about 80% of 2024 sales were concentrated in China, India and Southeast Asia. Those figures describe a global market, not the availability or legality of a particular model in your city.

Germany’s household data show how different categories can grow together: 12.2 million e-bikes and 1.4 million e-scooters were recorded in private households in 2023. The German Environment Agency reported 3.8 million bicycles and e-bikes sold in Germany in 2025 and estimated 17 million e-bikes in use at the end of that year. Adoption does not remove the need for protected infrastructure, secure parking or clear operating rules.

How to make a defensible choice

  1. Map a typical week. Record your longest regular trip, steepest hill, number of passengers, largest load and where the vehicle will sleep and charge.
  2. Eliminate illegal options. Check your transport authority for speed class, road access, helmet, licence, registration, insurance and parking requirements.
  3. Choose the smallest vehicle that meets the hard requirements. A bicycle or e-bike is easier to store than a microcar; a cargo bike is more capable than a scooter but needs more space.
  4. Test the real route. Include hills, rough surfaces, doorways, elevators, traffic junctions and the final parking location. A showroom ride on flat pavement is not enough.
  5. Budget the complete system. Add a lock, lights, helmet, rain gear, racks, insurance where required, charging equipment, service and eventual battery replacement.
  6. Plan for bad weather and failure. Decide how you will travel when the battery is empty, a tire is flat, temperatures reduce range or heavy rain makes an exposed vehicle unsuitable.

Environmental performance also depends on how long the vehicle lasts, what energy charges it and what infrastructure supports it. OECD lifecycle comparisons of private e-scooters and e-bikes show why no micromobility mode should be described as automatically low-carbon.
