Investigate the Athenaeum Illustre first, search Jacob’s House of the Balance on Voorburgwal for the ancient-name evidence, complete the Nominem-and-Aaron scratch sequence, then follow moonlight at night to Agares. This route is based on the Windows PC Early Access quest flow described by current walkthrough evidence.
Quest route at a glance
The Esbat investigation is easiest to understand as four linked phases. The university provides the first lead and its own documents; the guarded residence supplies the ancient name; the daytime spell gate must be completed before the night objective appears; and the final encounter is reached by following a beam of moonlight.

1. Get Adriaan’s identity lead
Return to the courtyard at home and speak with Adriaan. This conversation is the trigger that identifies the Eloquent Fox as Jacob Elzinga and marks the Athenaeum Illustre on your map. If the university is not marked, do not search for the night fight yet; the investigation has not reached that stage.
The conversation gives you a destination rather than the final name needed for the spell. Treat “Jacob Elzinga” as the person’s public identity. The ancient name is found later in the House of the Balance, so leaving the courtyard with only this first name is expected.

2. Investigate the Athenaeum Illustre
Reach Jacob’s room on the second floor
Go to the Athenaeum Illustre and make your way to the second floor. You will encounter Jacob accusing a woman of sorcery. That scene establishes that you are in the correct part of the investigation, but the useful evidence is in the room above and beyond the normal approach.
Use Aaron to enter from above
Switch to Aaron. On the left side, use the available jump points to gain height, cross the chandelier, and enter through the opening in the ceiling. This is the intended route into the room; trying to force the ordinary doorway from the lower level does not replace the ceiling approach.
Once inside, unlatch the floor door. Opening it creates a route between the room and the area below, which matters for returning to the evidence and for moving through the building without repeating the chandelier jump.

Read every document before leaving
Search the room thoroughly and interact with the documents. The university room contains the information that points the investigation toward the residence, but it is not the final source for Claes Shipper’s ancient name. Keep the two evidence locations separate: the Athenaeum Illustre is the office investigation, while the House of the Balance contains the residence letter and name evidence.
Rebuild the broken furniture
Repair the broken furniture in the room before moving on. The rebuild grants a power-up, and it is easy to overlook because it is separate from reading the documents. It is not required to “prove” the identity in dialogue, but collecting it now avoids a return trip and gives you the benefit while the investigation continues.

3. Find the House of the Balance on Voorburgwal
After the university investigation, Noa and Aaron direct you to Jacob’s residence. The House of the Balance is on Voorburgwal, close to the Athenaeum Illustre. Guards at the entrances distinguish it from ordinary nearby buildings.
The documented route through this guarded house uses Aaron’s possession ability and the basement window. The available evidence does not establish a universally shorter or faster route, so use this method rather than assuming that a different entrance is a required shortcut.
4. Enter through the basement window
Locate the open window
Approach the rear of the residence and look to the left of the back entrance. As Aaron, find the open window and drop into the basement. This avoids the guarded front approach and places Aaron inside where a servant can be possessed.
Possess a servant and open the way
Possess a servant in the basement, then return through the back entrance while controlling that servant. Escort Noa upward. Aaron should move ahead whenever a trapdoor blocks progress and unlatch it from the appropriate side.
Possession is safest when guards cannot see Aaron. Release the servant only while Aaron is out of sight, reposition if necessary, and then resume the escort. The important sequence is not simply “get inside”: the servant must be used to bring Noa through the guarded residence while Aaron handles the trapdoors.

5. Clear the attic and search the residence evidence
Deal with the two attic guards
Two guards wait in the attic. Switch Noa to witch form to deal with them, then search the shelves and the upper-room document interaction. The attic search is the residence portion of the investigation, so do not leave after dealing with the guards without checking both the shelves and the document interaction point.

Rebuild the attic furniture
Repair the broken furniture in the attic as well. This is the second easy-to-miss power-up in the quest route. There are two separate rebuild rewards: one in Jacob’s university room and one in the attic. Missing either one does not necessarily stop the objective, but both are worth collecting before you leave the building.
Recover the ancient name
The residence evidence reveals Jacob Elzinga’s original or ancient name: Claes Shipper. This is the name the daytime spell requires. The office journal helps establish the residence address, but it does not replace the residence letter or name evidence. If you have only the journal clue from the Athenaeum Illustre, continue searching the House of the Balance.
6. Complete the daytime Nominem and scratch gate
Return to Jacob with the recovered name
Once the residence evidence has supplied the ancient name, return to Jacob. The game expects you to use the name in a specific spell sequence rather than simply selecting it in dialogue.
Cast Nominem, then switch to Aaron
Cast Nominem using Claes Shipper. Immediately switch to Aaron and scratch the target. The scratch is the second half of the gate; casting the spell alone does not complete the daytime objective.

Wait for breach confirmation
Remain in the sequence until the game confirms that the breach has occurred. Do not leave as soon as the scratch animation or interaction finishes. The night preparation objective appears only after the daytime Nominem-and-scratch sequence has fully registered.
7. Prepare for night and locate the moonlight
Follow Noa’s home preparation objective after the daytime gate. The game provides limited direct wayfinding for the next encounter, so the visual clue is more useful than searching every nearby street: look for a beam of moonlight and follow it.
The moonlight leads to the fight location. If the expected encounter is not present, verify the daytime breach confirmation first. Repeating the residence search or wandering the university will not substitute for completing that gate.
8. Defeat Agares and finish the Esbat chain
Recognize the encounter
The Eloquent Fox’s Amalgam is identified as Agares. This is the night fight created by the completed investigation and moonlight route, not a separate optional battle discovered before the daytime sequence.

After defeating Agares, collect the NUX. Picking up the item is part of closing this encounter and ensures the quest state advances beyond the boss defeat.

Continue Cornelia and the ceremony
The Esbat chain is not finished by the boss fight alone. Continue with the Cornelia transcription and ceremony objectives shown after the encounter. Treat Agares as the end of the investigation segment, not the end of the entire Esbat sequence.

Troubleshooting the most common blocks
“I cannot find the Eloquent Fox.”
Return to the home courtyard and speak with Adriaan. The Athenaeum Illustre marker comes from that conversation, so traveling elsewhere before triggering it can leave the route unclear.
“The university room seems inaccessible.”
Go to the second floor, switch to Aaron, use the jump points on the left, cross the chandelier, and enter through the ceiling opening. After entering, unlatch the floor door so the room is accessible from below as well.
“I found the office journal, but Nominem will not work.”
The university journal is not the ancient-name evidence. Search the House of the Balance attic and its upper-room documents until the residence evidence reveals Claes Shipper. Then return to Jacob and repeat the daytime sequence.
“The guards prevent me from entering the residence.”
Use the open basement window left of the rear entrance. Aaron drops into the basement, possesses a servant, returns through the back entrance, escorts Noa upward, and unlatches trapdoors from ahead. Release possession only when Aaron is out of sight.
“The night fight never starts.”
Check the order of operations: Nominem must be cast with Claes Shipper, Aaron must scratch the target, and you must wait for the breach confirmation. Only then should you follow Noa’s home preparation objective and search for the moonlight beam.
“I defeated the boss, but the Esbat objective remains.”
Collect the NUX at the encounter site, then continue the Cornelia transcription and ceremony objectives. Agares is the Amalgam fight, not the final step of the whole chain.
