The 16-inch MacBook Pro is a strong fit if you need a large, high-quality display, substantial performance headroom, and ports for a professional setup. Its drawbacks are equally clear: it is a large laptop, costs a premium, and the M5 Max is unnecessary unless your work can use its extra graphics and memory capacity. For many buyers, M5 Pro is the more balanced choice; recent M4 Pro owners have a weaker reason to upgrade.
What are the pros and cons of the 16-inch MacBook Pro?
Apple’s 2026 16-inch MacBook Pro is available with M5 Pro or M5 Max. Its appeal is the combination of a spacious XDR display, strong built-in connectivity, long battery-life ratings, and options for demanding professional work. The trade-offs are size, price, and the risk of paying for performance or memory you will not use.

What makes the display and connectivity useful?
A large, detailed workspace
The 16.2-inch display has a native resolution of 3456 × 2234 pixels and adaptive ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz, according to Apple’s technical specifications. The extra screen area can make visual work and complex timelines easier to manage, and gives users who prefer a roomy workspace more space without an external monitor.

The M5 Pro and M5 Max models include three Thunderbolt 5 USB-C ports, MagSafe 3, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Apple says Thunderbolt 5 supports up to 120 Gb/s. For users connecting displays, cameras, and wired peripherals, this range can reduce the need for a hub or adapters, though the ports you need depend on your specific devices.

In its 2026 review, Tom’s Guide measured 21 hours and 10 minutes on the 16-inch M5 Pro during continuous Wi-Fi web surfing with the display set to 150 nits. That is an independent result under those specific test conditions, not a guarantee for other configurations or workloads. Read Tom’s Guide’s M5 Pro review.

Should you get M5 Pro or M5 Max?
Pick based on the demands of your real workload rather than assuming the higher-tier chip is automatically better value. Apple presents M5 Pro for complex workflows and M5 Max for workloads that push higher limits, such as engineering simulations. The company lists maximum unified memory of 64GB for M5 Pro and 128GB for M5 Max. Apple’s launch announcement also lists starting storage of 1TB for M5 Pro and 2TB for M5 Max.
| Choice | Consider it when | Memory ceiling listed by Apple | Price guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| M5 Pro | Your work is demanding and complex, but does not require the highest graphics or memory ceiling | Up to 64GB unified memory | Verify the exact configuration and current price; cited US starting-price figures conflict |
| M5 Max | Your work can use higher graphics or memory capacity, including especially demanding simulation work | Up to 128GB unified memory | Verify the exact configuration and current price; cited review text lists a US starting price of $3,899 |
There is not enough evidence here for a controlled performance comparison between the chips across particular applications. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 MacBook guide lists Geekbench 6 scores of 4,306 single-core and 28,586 multi-core for its 16-inch M5 Pro entry. Those are that publication’s benchmark results, not a prediction for every configuration or workload. See Tom’s Guide’s 2026 MacBook guide.

Is the 16-inch MacBook Pro worth the price?
It can be worth the premium if you will regularly use its large display, sustained professional performance, and built-in ports. The exact configuration matters: storage, memory, and chip choice affect what you pay, and prices vary by country and date.
There is a conflict in the cited US pricing: Tom’s Guide’s detailed review states an M5 Pro starting price of $2,699, while its 2026 buyer guide gives $2,999. The review text lists $3,899 as the M5 Max starting price. Because the M5 Pro figures disagree and prices can change, confirm the price for the exact configuration and country before buying; do not treat either M5 Pro figure as a reliable current quote.

If you mainly browse, write, or do other lighter work, compare the 16-inch Pro with the 15-inch MacBook Air, which Tom’s Guide points to as a lower-priced large-screen option for lighter tasks. If you want a Pro model but prioritize a smaller footprint, consider the 14-inch MacBook Pro. These are choices to weigh for screen space, portability, professional workload, and price—not controlled performance comparisons.

Is the 16-inch MacBook Pro too big to travel with?
That depends on how often you carry it and whether you value its screen more than a compact footprint. The 16.2-inch display is an advantage at a desk, but adds bulk compared with a 14-inch Pro or a MacBook Air. If your usual tasks are lighter and you commute frequently, a smaller model may be a better match. If you travel with a workload that benefits from the larger workspace and Pro-tier performance, the size may be a reasonable trade-off.

Should you upgrade from an M4 Pro MacBook Pro?
Not by default. Tom’s Guide characterizes M5 Pro as a modest upgrade over M4 Pro and says the improvements do not warrant an upgrade for existing M4 Pro owners. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a rule for every user. Consider upgrading if your current machine is failing to meet a specific workload, or if a larger screen or a particular capacity is important to you; otherwise, compare the work you do today with what the new configuration would actually change.
