AI agents can do more for service reliability than answer operational questions: they can help investigate incidents, prepare mitigations, and—in carefully bounded cases—carry out approved actions. The opportunity is real, but the evidence does not yet establish that agents broadly improve uptime, reduce incident duration, or cut operating costs. Their value depends on how well teams constrain, test, and measure them.

What can AI agents do for service reliability?

In site reliability engineering (SRE), an agent can connect operational context—such as alerts, service documentation, logs, and incident history—to a sequence of investigative or operational steps. That makes it potentially useful across several parts of incident response, not just as a conversational interface.

  • Monitor and investigate: Bring together relevant signals, identify likely causes, and help responders understand what changed.
  • Document and coordinate: Summarize findings, preserve an incident timeline, and support handoffs between responders.
  • Recommend mitigation: Propose a change, explain its rationale, and identify risks for a human to review.
  • Execute bounded actions: In a narrowly defined scenario, take an authorized action subject to technical controls and notification.

These are described capabilities, not proof of an across-the-board reliability gain. Google’s account of its AI Operator and Actus designs explains approaches to operational agents; Microsoft describes an Azure SRE Agent for triage, root-cause analysis, and governed mitigations. Neither source establishes that all organizations will achieve better service outcomes by adopting an agent. Google SRE’s account of AI in SRE and Microsoft’s Azure SRE Agent documentation are product and architecture descriptions, not neutral comparative outcome studies.

Microsoft Learn calls Azure SRE Agent “an AI-powered operations teammate that helps you improve uptime, reduce incident impact, and cut operational toil.” That is Microsoft’s product description; it should not be read as independently verified evidence of those results.

How much autonomy should an agent have?

Autonomy is not an on/off switch. Google’s SRE article describes five levels, from human execution to full autonomy. Its levels are a framework presented by Google, not an industry standard or evidence that every production agent has reached a particular level.

Level What happens Human role
L0: Manual execution People perform the operational work without agent execution. Humans investigate and act.
L1: AI-assisted investigation The agent monitors or investigates and offers information or suggestions. A person approves and carries out actions.
L2: Approval-gated change The system prepares or actuates a change only after explicit human approval. A person approves the specific action.
L3: Bounded autonomy The agent acts independently in specific, well-defined scenarios, with controls and notification. People handle novel cases and retain oversight.
L4: Full autonomy The framework describes full autonomy as its highest level. The page’s description does not specify a universal operational arrangement for every system.

A useful principle is to make autonomy conditional on the action and the current production context. Google describes downgrading an autonomous request to human approval when the current risk or system state calls for it. An agent should not retain blanket permission to perform a risky operation simply because that operation was safe in a previous situation.

What controls should be in place before production actions?

Production actions can have consequences beyond a bad answer. Google warns that “Mistakes in production are costly–unlike development sandboxes where failures are contained, an AI agent making an incorrect decision or taking a faulty action in production can lead to immediate and widespread service disruptions.” The safeguards described in Google’s technical account are architectural practices to consider, not a guarantee that an agent is safe.

  • Least privilege and distinct identities: Give each agent identity only the access needed for its assigned tasks, separate from human or other agent credentials.
  • Risk-aware authorization: Evaluate the proposed action against current service conditions and its potential impact; require stronger approval for higher-risk changes.
  • Dry runs: Require the agent to show the intended operation and expected effects before execution where the action supports a dry run.
  • Guarded execution: Validate requests through a control plane before they reach production systems.
  • Rate limits and circuit breakers: Limit repeated or cascading actions and stop execution when defined conditions are met.
  • Audit trails: Record the agent’s inputs, decisions, approvals, and actions so responders can reconstruct what happened.
  • Emergency control: Provide a way to pause in-flight actions and revoke elevated autonomy.

Approval gates alone are not a complete safety strategy: reviewers need enough context to judge an action, and the system still needs technical boundaries on what can execute. For novel or poorly understood cases, keeping the agent in investigation or recommendation mode preserves human control while the team learns how it behaves.

How should teams test and debug reliability agents?

Testing should use operational scenarios, not just demonstrations in which an agent completes a clean task. Google describes an evaluation pipeline built around operational histories and agent trajectories, with data-quality tiers that include human-verified examples and continuous evaluation. In practice, that suggests preserving incident traces, having experienced operators review a representative sample, and replaying those cases to assess proposed behavior before expanding permissions.

Task completion by itself can conceal important failure modes. Microsoft Research’s AgentRx announcement says, “Traditional success metrics (like ‘Did the task finish?’) don’t tell us enough.” An agent might finish while using invented information, misunderstanding tool output, or taking an action it was not authorized to take.

What AgentRx’s results show—and do not show

In a March 12, 2026 announcement, Microsoft Research reported that AgentRx was evaluated on 115 manually annotated failed trajectories across τ-bench, Flash, and Magentic-One. The framework’s authors reported a 23.6% absolute improvement in failure-localization accuracy and a 22.9% improvement in root-cause attribution over prompting baselines. These are benchmark results reported by the framework’s authors. They are not measurements of production uptime, incident reduction, or prevention of real-world outages. Microsoft Research’s AgentRx announcement describes the framework and its benchmark.

Look beyond a single success score

AgentRx’s failure categories illustrate what an evaluation can miss: skipped plan steps, invented information, malformed tool calls, misread tool output, a mismatch between user intent and the plan, missing user information, unsupported requests, guardrail blocks, and system failures. Classifying errors helps teams distinguish a model reasoning problem from a tool, context, policy, or infrastructure problem.

For each scenario, evaluate whether the agent completed the task correctly, stayed within its authority, verified the result, and used current, relevant documentation and telemetry. Keep failures in the test set as systems and prompts change; otherwise, a score can improve while important operational weaknesses remain hidden.

How should reliability be measured when an agent is involved?

Measure the service outcome and the agent’s contribution separately. Google Cloud recommends aligning service-level objectives (SLOs) with business outcomes and tracking technical measures that affect user experience. Its architecture guidance gives the following targets as examples—not universal recommendations:

  • “99.9% of API calls must return a successful response”
  • “95th percentile inference latency must be below 300 ms”
  • “TTFT must be below 500 ms for 99% of requests”
  • “Rate of harmful output must be below 0.1%”

These are examples from Google Cloud’s guidance; a team should set targets that fit its service, users, and risk tolerance. The guidance also recommends monitoring latency, traffic, error rate, and saturation, and collecting logs and traces while observing data quality and freshness. Google Cloud’s reliability guidance for AI and ML covers these measures.

For an operational agent, add task-level checks to service-level indicators. Track whether work was completed correctly, whether every action was authorized, whether a claimed mitigation was verified, and whether the agent’s context reflected current service state. Track harmful or irrelevant output and agent latency alongside infrastructure health. If an agent appears to reduce toil, measure the human work saved without treating that as a substitute for safe and correct service outcomes.

What do adoption and security surveys tell us?

The Cloud Security Alliance report Enterprise AI Security Starts with AI Agents, released April 15, 2026, reports that 47% of surveyed organizations had experienced an AI-agent-related security incident; 53% said agents occasionally or sometimes exceeded intended permissions; and 58% said detection and response took five hours or longer. It also reports that 43% of organizations had more than half their employees regularly using agents, while 54% reported 1–100 unsanctioned agents. These figures describe that report’s survey, not a universal estimate of agent adoption or risk. The report was commissioned by Zenity, a qualification relevant to interpreting its findings. The Cloud Security Alliance report page provides its context.

What remains uncertain?

The available sources describe capabilities, architecture, evaluation methods, and survey findings. They do not establish a general measured improvement in uptime, mean time to resolution, incident volume, or operating cost attributable to AI agents across organizations. Nor do they provide a neutral head-to-head evaluation of commercial SRE agents. A practical decision should therefore rest on a team’s own incident histories, risk controls, and measured results—not on capability descriptions alone.
