155 mm Howitzers vs. Rocket Artillery: Range, Precision and Battlefield Roles

Neither system is simply “better.” A 155 mm howitzer is the usual choice for responsive, repeatable fire in direct support of maneuver units. Rocket artillery—especially the M142 HIMARS firing GMLRS—trades sustained volume for much longer reach, rapid displacement and concentrated effects against deep, high-value targets. Guided 155 mm projectiles such as Excalibur and guided GMLRS rockets are both precision weapons, so any fair comparison must name the launcher, ammunition and guidance mode.

What is being compared?

“155 mm howitzer” describes a family of cannon systems that fire 155 mm projectiles. The gun, propellant charge and projectile determine the practical range; barrel length, firing angle and ammunition design all matter. A towed M777A2, a self-propelled M109 variant and an automated 52-calibre system such as Archer are all 155 mm howitzers, but they do not have identical mobility or ammunition performance.

“Rocket artillery” covers launchers that fire unguided or guided rockets and, in some cases, larger missiles. HIMARS is a wheeled launcher that carries either a pod of six GMLRS/MLRS rockets or one ATACMS missile. The launcher is not the munition: a range figure for one GMLRS variant cannot be transferred automatically to every rocket or missile that fits the system.

The comparison therefore has four variables:

  • Launcher: towed cannon, self-propelled howitzer or wheeled rocket launcher.
  • Munition: conventional high-explosive shell, guided shell, rocket or missile.
  • Mission: close support, interdiction, counter-battery fire or a point-target strike.
  • Fire plan: repeated individual rounds, a battery mission or a rapid salvo.

Changing any one of those variables can reverse the answer to “which is better?”

Range: rockets normally reach farther, but the ammunition label matters

Public U.S. Army figures show a broad reach advantage for GMLRS over today’s commonly cited 155 mm capabilities. They also show why a single headline number is misleading.

System or munition Published range or result Precision information Qualification
Excalibur guided 155 mm projectile 40 km 6 metres or better United States Army description, 2010; fired from M777A2 or M109A6 howitzers
XM1113 rocket-assisted 155 mm projectile Beyond 24 miles (about 40 km) Near-precision capability was intended United States Army program reporting, 2016; an ammunition objective, not a universal range for all 155 mm shells
Current rocket-assisted 155 mm capability About 30 km Not stated for every projectile U.S. Army Acquisition Support Center, 2021
ERCA demonstration with a precision projectile 70 km Precision projectile used in the demonstration U.S. Army Acquisition Support Center, 2021; demonstration result rather than the standard range of every fielded howitzer
HIMARS with GMLRS-Unitary 70-plus km Guided rocket United States Army Weapon Systems Handbook, 2020
Extended-Range GMLRS test Beyond 100 km Specific extended-range test munition United States Army test report, 2025; not the standard range of every HIMARS round

The practical conclusion is straightforward: a conventional 155 mm battery generally covers the close and intermediate fight, while GMLRS gives HIMARS a deep-fire option at more than twice the 30–40 km figures commonly associated with guided or rocket-assisted cannon ammunition. The 70 km ERCA result and the beyond-100 km Extended-Range GMLRS test demonstrate development headroom, not a promise that every unit or projectile can reproduce those distances.

Precision is a property of the round, not the launcher

Excalibur and other guided 155 mm ammunition

The U.S. Army described Excalibur in 2010 as a 155 mm precision-guided, extended-range projectile intended to engage targets precisely while minimizing collateral damage. The Army gave a 40 km range and accuracy of 6 metres or better for that munition. Those figures belong to Excalibur under the stated test and operational conditions; they do not describe an unguided high-explosive shell fired from the same gun.

Guided cannon ammunition can let a howitzer attack a point target with fewer rounds than an unguided fire mission, especially when the target’s location is known accurately and the fire-control system has a current firing solution. It does not remove the need for target-quality coordinates, weather data, communications and battle-damage assessment.

GMLRS and the HIMARS launcher

GMLRS is a guided rocket family. The Army’s Weapon Systems Handbook lists more than 70 km for HIMARS firing GMLRS-Unitary. The British Army describes its GMLRS as offering “pinpoint accuracy” with a 200-pound high-explosive warhead. A guided rocket can therefore combine long reach with a unitary warhead suited to a high-value point target.

The Extended-Range GMLRS result beyond 100 km was a 2025 test of a particular munition. It should be read as a test outcome, not as the normal range of every GMLRS rocket or every HIMARS deployment.

Why “accuracy” comparisons often go wrong

“Precision” can refer to several different things: the weapon’s dispersion, the quality of the target coordinates, the reliability of the guidance system, or the damage effect required for the mission. A six-metre accuracy statement for Excalibur and a “pinpoint” description for GMLRS are not a complete apples-to-apples test unless the same target set, weather, guidance mode and measurement method are specified.

Unguided shells and unguided rockets must be evaluated separately from their guided relatives. A launcher’s reputation for precision does not make every round it fires a precision munition.

How 155 mm howitzers are used on the battlefield

Responsive support for maneuver formations

Howitzers are built around the requirement to answer quickly when infantry, armor or other maneuver units need fires. Batteries can shift among targets, adjust fire and keep delivering rounds as a formation advances or defends. The mission may be suppression, neutralization, obscuration with smoke, destruction of a position or disruption of movement.

That flexibility comes from a large ammunition family. High-explosive shells provide blast and fragmentation; smoke rounds obscure observation or movement; and guided projectiles add a point-target option. A commander can select the effect and rate of fire rather than committing an entire rocket pod to one engagement.

Sustained fire and ammunition depth

Army University Press historical analysis concluded in 2024 that “rocket artillery systems remained inherently limited in their ability to sustain fire compared to their cannon counterparts.” The reason is operational rather than purely technological: cannon units are organized and supplied for repeated shell missions, while rocket systems generally deliver their strongest effect in shorter, concentrated salvos and then reload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sustained fire does not mean firing continuously without pause. Barrel heating, ammunition resupply, crew fatigue, communications and counter-fire risk still impose limits. It means that, for a prolonged series of missions, cannon artillery normally offers more repeatable volume and a wider choice of shell effects.

Different howitzer designs

  • M777A2: a towed 155 mm system designed for direct, general and reinforcing support. Its lower weight relative to many self-propelled guns can simplify transport, but the crew must emplace, aim and displace the weapon.
  • M109 family: self-propelled 155 mm artillery that moves with the formation and protects its crew and ammunition better than a towed piece during tactical movement.
  • Archer: an automated 155 mm, 52-calibre gun system. Automation can shorten crew exposure during loading and displacement, while the longer barrel is part of a design optimized for modern range and fire-control requirements.

These examples illustrate why “howitzer mobility” is not one fixed attribute. A self-propelled or automated system can relocate tactically faster than a towed gun, while a towed system may impose less vehicle and maintenance burden.

How rocket artillery is used

Deep shaping and interdiction

The Army handbook characterizes HIMARS as a precision rocket and missile fire-support system for early-entry, long-range and deep operations. Its typical targets include enemy artillery, command nodes, air-defense systems, logistics hubs and other high-value points beyond the immediate contact line. The purpose is to shape the battle before opposing forces can concentrate or to disrupt the sustainment that keeps them fighting.

Counter-battery and rapid concentration

When sensors locate an enemy artillery position, a rocket launcher can deliver a concentrated mission quickly and displace before the opponent completes its own response. A HIMARS pod can launch six GMLRS rockets, or the launcher can carry one ATACMS missile. That choice favors rapid, concentrated effects against a limited number of important targets rather than a long sequence of small corrections against many dispersed targets.

Mobility and survivability

HIMARS is a wheeled launcher designed to move rapidly between firing points. “Shoot-and-scoot” tactics reduce the time available for counter-fire, although mobility does not make a unit invisible. Launch signatures, road networks, reload vehicles, communications and the availability of covered positions still affect survivability.

Self-propelled howitzers also move tactically and can keep pace with maneuver forces. Towed guns trade some displacement speed and crew protection for lower system complexity and weight. The relevant question is not whether rockets are mobile and guns are static; it is how quickly the specific unit can emplace, fire, reload and leave under the conditions of the operation.

Mission-by-mission comparison

Mission or requirement 155 mm howitzer advantage Rocket-artillery advantage What decides the choice
Close support of troops in contact Responsive, repeatable shell missions and varied ammunition Long reach but usually less economical for routine close support Target distance, required rate of fire and available ammunition
Prolonged suppression Higher suitability for sustained fire Short, intense salvo can create immediate shock Duration of the mission and resupply plan
Deep interdiction Possible with specialized ammunition, but range is more constrained GMLRS reach of 70-plus km and longer-range variants Required depth, target value and munition inventory
Counter-battery fire Useful when the hostile battery is within cannon range and repeated missions are needed Long reach and rapid displacement support distant counter-battery engagements Sensor-to-shooter time, target movement and survivability
High-value point target Excalibur offers a guided 155 mm option Guided GMLRS combines precision with a larger stand-off envelope Target distance, desired warhead effect and rules of engagement
Smoke or routine obscuration Broad shell family and repeatable fire Not normally the primary reason to expend a long-range rocket Required area, duration and ammunition availability
Early-entry or expeditionary force Towed guns can be air-transportable, depending on force package HIMARS is designed for early-entry and long-range precision fires Aircraft, roads, reload support and the planned operating area

Salvo size, effects and reload logic

A howitzer battery normally builds an effect through a sequence of individual shells. Fire direction can adjust the mission, vary fuze settings and shift among targets without committing all ammunition at once. That is useful when the target picture changes rapidly or when commanders need a continuing screen of fire.

HIMARS concentrates effects differently. Six GMLRS rockets can be fired from one pod, and the launcher can instead carry a single ATACMS missile. A salvo can overwhelm a point target or strike several aim points in a short window, but the pod then has to be replaced and the launcher resupplied. The rocket option is therefore powerful when time and target value dominate; the cannon option is usually more efficient when a formation needs many separate or repeated missions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Warhead design also matters. A unitary high-explosive rocket is not interchangeable with a shell selected for smoke, illumination or a different fragmentation pattern. Comparing “damage” by caliber alone ignores fuze, warhead, angle of attack, target construction and the number of rounds required.

Mobility, logistics and survivability trade-offs

Displacement cycle

Rocket launchers are optimized to fire, move and reappear at another point, often using road mobility to cover large areas. Self-propelled howitzers can also conduct rapid displacement, while towed systems require more crew activity and towing equipment. In all cases, a unit that stays in one firing position after revealing itself becomes easier to find.

Reload and ammunition supply

GMLRS pods and ATACMS missiles are large, specialized loads. Their transport, storage and reload equipment must be positioned close enough to keep launchers available. Cannon ammunition is heavy as well, but the broader 155 mm supply chain supports many types of missions and can sustain a high number of shots when logistics are functioning.

Network dependence

Long-range precision fires are only as useful as the information linking sensors, fire-control systems and launchers. A stale coordinate can produce a precise miss. Weather, terrain, electronic interference, communications outages and target movement affect both guided shells and guided rockets. Rocket artillery’s range does not eliminate the need for forward observation and reliable battle-management networks; it increases the value of getting those networks right.

  1. Define the target distance. If the target lies outside the available cannon envelope, a long-range rocket or missile may be the only organic option. If it is inside that envelope, continue comparing effects rather than choosing by range alone.
  2. Specify the required effect. Decide whether the mission needs sustained suppression, smoke, repeated neutralization, a single point strike or a rapid salvo.
  3. Choose guided or unguided ammunition. Do not use Excalibur’s accuracy to describe ordinary shells, or GMLRS precision to describe every rocket.
  4. Check target-quality data. Confirm coordinates, timing, target movement and collateral-damage constraints before selecting a precision round.
  5. Estimate the fire duration. A short, high-value engagement favors concentrated rocket effects; a mission lasting many fire cycles generally favors cannon artillery.
  6. Plan the displacement and reload. Include roads, concealment, counter-fire risk, reload vehicles and the time required to return to action.
  7. Match the echelon. Howitzers commonly support close and intermediate fights. HIMARS is optimized for deep shaping, counter-battery and high-value point targets, while still retaining the flexibility to support other missions when the commander assigns it.

What the Hawaii transition illustrates

In a Hawaii transition reported by the U.S. Army, eight 105 mm and six 155 mm howitzers were replaced by 16 HIMARS units. The Army characterized HIMARS as a flexible, mobile long-range option while retaining cannon artillery for the close fight. That decision is an example of force design, not proof that rockets make howitzers obsolete: the replacement increased long-range launcher capacity for a particular formation and mission, while the broader force still requires cannon fires for sustained support.

Maj. Gen. Charles D. Evans, commander of the 25th Infantry Division, said in the same Army coverage, “It’s clear that the HIMARS weapon system will make us more lethal at the end of the day.” The statement describes the value of adding long-range precision and mobility; it does not erase the distinct jobs performed by cannon units.

Costs and availability: what can and cannot be concluded

There is no comparable public cost-per-shot series in the supplied official material for 155 mm shells, Excalibur, GMLRS and ATACMS. Prices also vary by contract, production lot, guidance package, warhead and national procurement. It would be misleading to declare one family cheaper without a defined country, year, ammunition type and accounting method.

Availability is equally important. A commander may prefer a long-range guided rocket, but the decision depends on the number of launchers, pods or missiles in theater, reload stocks, transport capacity and the sensor network needed to employ them. A less glamorous shell that is on hand and supportable can be more useful than a theoretically superior round that is unavailable.

Bottom line: choose the mission, not the marketing label

Choose 155 mm howitzers when the force needs responsive fires close to maneuver units, a broad ammunition family and the ability to sustain repeated missions. Choose HIMARS and GMLRS when the priority is deep reach, rapid concentration, counter-battery action, high-value point targets and quick displacement. Excalibur proves that a cannon can deliver precision at roughly 40 km with the Army’s stated 6-metre-or-better accuracy, while GMLRS extends guided effects beyond 70 km and has demonstrated still greater range in specialized tests.

The most accurate comparison is therefore not “howitzer versus HIMARS.” It is a specific 155 mm launcher and projectile against a specific rocket launcher and munition, assessed against the target’s distance, required effect, fire duration, logistics and survivability.
