The 15-inch MacBook Air with M3 was announced and opened for orders on March 4, 2024, then reached customers and stores on March 8, 2024. Its original U.S. starting price was $1,299 ($1,199 for education customers). In 2026, it is an older model following Apple’s M5 MacBook Air update, so its value now depends on the discount, configuration, warranty, and condition.

Those figures are historical launch prices, not a universal 2026 price. Apple’s current MacBook Air generation is M5, and the 15-inch M5 model also launched from $1,299. An M3 unit found today may be new old stock, refurbished, open-box, or used; its actual price should be judged using the retailer, date, condition, warranty, and exact configuration.
Specifications
M3 chip
The laptop uses Apple’s M3 chip with an 8-core CPU—four performance cores and four efficiency cores—a 10-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine. It has 100GB/s memory bandwidth, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and media engines supporting H.264, HEVC, ProRes, ProRes RAW, and AV1 decoding.
That makes it well suited to browsing, office work, study, programming, photo editing, and moderate video work. It is not a MacBook Pro replacement for long, sustained professional workloads: the Air has a quiet, fanless design rather than active cooling.

Memory and storage are not user-upgradable after purchase. For a computer intended to last several years, 16GB of memory is the safer minimum for many buyers, while 24GB is especially attractive for development tools, virtual machines, large creative projects, or heavy multitasking. Storage also deserves attention because 256GB can fill quickly with applications, photos, video, and local files.
Display
The display is a 15.3-inch Liquid Retina panel with a 2880 × 1864 resolution, 224 pixels per inch, up to 500 nits brightness, wide P3 color, True Tone, support for 1 billion colors, IPS technology, and LED backlighting.
“15-inch” is the product-category name; the actual diagonal measurement is 15.3 inches. The screen is spacious for split-screen work without the size and weight of a 16-inch MacBook Pro. It remains a 60Hz display and does not offer ProMotion.
Battery and charging
The 66.5-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery is rated by Apple for up to 18 hours of Apple TV app movie playback or up to 15 hours of wireless web browsing. These are controlled-test results, not guaranteed runtimes. Brightness, browser tabs, wireless conditions, video editing, gaming, workload, and battery health can all change actual battery life.
Rank #3
- IMPRESSIVELY BIG, IMPOSSIBLY THIN — The 15-inch MacBook Air makes room for more of what you love with a spacious Liquid Retina display. The durable 100 percent recycled aluminum enclosure is strikingly thin and light.
- SUPERCHARGED BY M2 — Get more done faster with a powerful 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, and up to 24GB of unified memory.
- UP TO 18 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Go all day with the power-efficient performance of the Apple M2 chip. (Battery life varies by use and configuration. See apple.com/batteries for more information.)
- SPACIOUS, BEAUTIFUL DISPLAY — The high-resolution, 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display features 500 nits of brightness, P3 wide color, and support for one billion colors for vibrant images and incredible detail. (The display on the 15-inch MacBook Air has rounded corners at the top. When measured as a standard rectangular shape, the screen is 15.3 inches diagonally; actual viewable area is less.)
- SILENT DESIGN — MacBook Air features a fanless design that runs completely silent, no matter the task.
Charging uses MagSafe 3. The laptop shipped with a 35W dual USB-C port compact power adapter and supports fast charging with the optional 70W USB-C adapter.
Ports and external displays
Ports include:
- MagSafe 3 charging
- Two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports supporting up to 40Gb/s
- 3.5mm headphone jack
- DisplayPort output over USB-C
With its built-in display active, the M3 Air supports one external display up to 6K at 60Hz. It can support a second external display up to 5K at 60Hz only when the MacBook’s lid is closed. Buyers who need two monitors should not assume they can use both external screens while also using the built-in display.
There is no built-in HDMI port, SD card slot, or USB-A port, so some desk setups will require a USB-C hub or adapter.
Wireless connectivity
The M3 Air uses Wi-Fi 6E where supported by the country or region and Bluetooth 5.3. It does not have Wi-Fi 7; that is associated with later MacBook Air generations.

Size, weight, and colors
The aluminum unibody enclosure measures 0.45 inches (1.15cm) thick, 13.40 inches (34.04cm) wide, and 9.35 inches (23.76cm) deep. It weighs 3.3 pounds (1.51kg). The 15-inch size provides a large workspace, but it is less convenient to carry than the 13-inch Air.
Launch colors were Midnight, Starlight, Silver, and Space Gray. Apple said the Midnight finish used an anodization treatment intended to reduce fingerprints.
What was new about the M3 model?
The 15-inch M3 Air combined the larger Air design with the M3 generation’s hardware features, including hardware-accelerated ray tracing and AV1 decoding. It also added support for two external displays when the built-in screen is closed, a useful improvement for a docked office setup.

It retained the strengths of the Air design: a thin aluminum body, MagSafe charging, long advertised battery life, and silent fanless operation. The trade-off is that sustained demanding work is better matched to a MacBook Pro with active cooling and more expansion options.

How it compares with newer MacBook Air models
Apple’s current MacBook Air lineup has moved on to M5. Apple’s M5 announcement identifies newer features including Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, a 12MP Center Stage camera, and 512GB starting storage. Those are meaningful differences from the M3’s Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, 1080p camera, and 256GB base SSD.
The practical comparison is therefore not simply “M3 versus M5.” It is a price-and-configuration decision:
- Choose the current 15-inch Air if its price is close to an M3 unit, or if you want the longest practical support horizon, current warranty path, newer connectivity, and newer camera features.
- Consider the M3 if it is substantially discounted and has at least 16GB of memory, enough storage, verified battery condition, and useful return and warranty coverage.
- Do not compare a discounted 24GB/512GB M3 only with a newer base model; the older machine may offer more immediately useful memory or storage.
Is the 15-inch MacBook Air M3 worth buying in 2026?
Yes, conditionally. It remains a capable large-screen laptop for students, remote workers, general productivity, programming, communications, photo editing, and moderate creative work. Its strongest 2026 value comes from a meaningful clearance, refurbished, open-box, or used discount—especially for a 16GB or 24GB configuration.
It is a poor purchase when an M3 model costs nearly as much as the current 15-inch Air, when it has the restrictive 8GB/256GB base configuration, or when the buyer needs sustained professional rendering, more built-in ports, a high-refresh display, or MacBook Pro-class expansion and cooling.
Buying checklist for used, refurbished, or clearance stock
- Confirm the exact configuration: check memory, SSD capacity, GPU configuration, and included adapter rather than relying on a seller’s generic title.
- Check battery condition: for used units, review battery health and cycle count.
- Verify Activation Lock status: the previous owner must remove the Mac from their Apple account.
- Check warranty and returns: confirm whether the unit is new, refurbished, open-box, or used, and read the condition grade and return window.
- Confirm included accessories: check for the MagSafe cable and power adapter, and do not assume the 70W adapter is included.
- Compare against the current model: if the price gap is small, the newer 15-inch Air is usually the safer long-term purchase.
Bottom line
The 15-inch MacBook Air M3 launched on March 8, 2024, after Apple announced it and opened orders on March 4, at a U.S. starting price of $1,299. In August 2026, it makes sense mainly as a discounted 15.3-inch productivity laptop—preferably with 16GB or 24GB of memory and adequate storage. If its price approaches the current M5 15-inch Air, buy the newer model instead.
