If Call Recording is missing, will not start, saves no audio, or produces no transcript on an iPhone running iOS 26, first identify which recorder you are using. Apple’s built-in feature is in the Phone app—not a separate recorder app—and saves recordings in Notes → Call Recordings. Third-party apps use different call-routing systems and need separate troubleshooting.
Recording and transcription are separate features. Regional and language rules can hide the recording control or allow recording without a transcript. Apple Intelligence is optional for summaries; it is not required to record a call.

Check the basics first
1. Confirm that you are using Apple’s native recorder
During an eligible call, Apple’s workflow is Phone → More (…) → Call Recording. The recording is written automatically to Notes. If an app asks you to dial a recording number, merge calls, create an account, or use a conference line, it is a third-party service and does not follow Apple’s workflow.

2. Verify the iOS version and install the latest iOS 26 update
Open Settings → General → About and read iOS Version. Then check Settings → General → Software Update. Install the newest available iOS 26 build before testing again; labels and behavior can differ between point releases.
3. Check country, region, and language support
Availability is not worldwide. Apple’s current documentation lists Call Recording as unavailable in the European Union, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. The list and supported languages can change, so use Apple’s feature-availability page rather than relying on an old list.
Do not change your Apple Account or device region solely to unlock recording. That can affect other services and does not make a legally or technically restricted feature available.

4. Turn on Call Recording in Settings
Go to Settings → Apps → Phone → Call Recording and enable it. Apple says the option is on by default, but it can be disabled. If the setting itself is absent, investigate region, language, software, device-management, or other availability limits instead of looking for another toggle.
5. Test a standard one-to-one cellular call
Use an ordinary phone call with one other person. For a clean test, avoid group or conference calls, FaceTime, VoIP apps, calls routed through another recorder, and business phone systems. Apple documents FaceTime audio recording separately, so its controls and availability may differ from a normal Phone call.
Fix a missing control or failed save
6. Look under More (…) during the call
Call Recording is not necessarily a permanent button on the main call screen. After the call connects, tap More (…) and look for Call Recording. If it is still missing after the checks above, continue with a restart and a fresh test call.

7. Restart the iPhone and retry
- Turn the iPhone off.
- Wait several seconds, then turn it on.
- Place a new one-to-one call.
- Open More (…) → Call Recording again.
A restart can refresh an interface that failed to reload after an update or settings change. It cannot override regional restrictions.
8. Check available storage
Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Remove unneeded videos, downloads, or apps if the device is nearly full, then make another short test recording. Apple does not publish a universal minimum free-space requirement for Call Recording, so treat low storage as a practical diagnostic possibility rather than a guaranteed cause.
9. Look in the correct Notes folder
After stopping the recording—or ending the call—open Notes → Folders → Call Recordings. If it is not immediately visible, close and reopen Notes and search Notes for “Call Recordings,” then allow a short delay. Apple says user-initiated recordings are saved there (iPhone User Guide). Deleting the audio also deletes its associated transcript.

10. Distinguish an iPhone problem from Notes sync or restrictions
If the recording is present on the iPhone but absent on an iPad or Mac, inspect the Notes account and synchronization settings on each device. If it is missing on the original iPhone, focus on the recording, storage, or Notes-write steps. A locked note, managed device, or account restriction can also prevent access even when the file exists.
Fix transcript and audio problems
11. Treat transcription as a separate feature
Play the audio before diagnosing a transcript problem. Apple lists fewer supported languages and regions for Call Transcription than for Call Recording (feature availability). A transcript can remain in progress, and Apple warns that it may not represent every word perfectly; review it before relying on it. Update iOS, verify language and region support, and wait for processing before concluding that transcription failed.

12. Diagnose a silent or incomplete recording
- Raise the iPhone volume and play the file through the built-in speaker and headphones.
- Confirm that recording began after the call connected.
- Make another short test call.
- Disconnect Bluetooth accessories and retry without CarPlay, a headset, or another audio route.
- Compare the result with and without the accessory.
These steps isolate an audio-route or call-context problem; they do not establish a particular hardware fault.
13. Update, then contact the right support channel
- Install the latest available iOS 26 update.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Repeat a one-to-one test call.
- Check Notes → Call Recordings.
- Contact Apple Support if the native feature still fails in a supported region, language, software build, and call type.
For TapeACall, Rev, Google Voice, or another app, contact that developer. Apple can explain its native feature but cannot repair a third-party app’s recording line, call-merging process, carrier dependency, or account.

Privacy, consent, and call-recording notices
When Apple’s native recording starts, both participants hear an audio notice. Apple advises making sure the other person is willing to be recorded (iPhone User Guide). Recording laws can depend on the jurisdictions where participants are located and on the purpose of the recording. Obtain appropriate consent and check applicable law; do not attempt to bypass Apple’s notice with hidden-recording workarounds, jailbreaks, unknown configuration profiles, or unsupported screen-recording tricks.
When a third-party recorder makes sense
Use Apple’s built-in feature first when it is available and meets your needs. Third-party services change the calling workflow and may require subscriptions, carrier support, a separate number, or a manual merge.

A third-party app cannot make Apple’s native Notes integration, regional rules, or consent obligations disappear. Avoid any product promising silent recording or a guaranteed automatic recorder on every iOS 26 device.
