Open Snapchat’s Camera screen and swipe right twice to open Snap Map. From there you can view eligible friends who share their location, browse public Snaps, find Places, send a map pin, and configure location privacy. Location sharing is off by default; choose an audience deliberately before enabling it.
What Snap Map shows
Snap Map combines friend locations, community Snaps linked to events or areas, and Place pages for businesses, landmarks and other venues. It is not a universal live-location tracker: a friend appears only when you are mutual Snapchat friends, the friend has shared with you, permissions allow updates, and the location has not expired.

Bitmoji poses, travel callouts and public Snaps are Snapchat-generated signals. They can be delayed or based on recent activity, so they are not proof of someone’s exact current behavior or position.

How to open Snap Map
- Open Snapchat on your phone.
- Start on the Camera screen.
- Swipe right twice. Snapchat’s documented path is described at How do I view Snap Map?
Your version may also show a Map icon or tab. Labels and placement vary by iOS or Android version, region and feature rollout.
How to find a friend
- Open Snap Map and look for the friend’s Bitmoji, or use the available map or friend search.
- Tap the Bitmoji to view the map information Snapchat makes available.
You can also open a Chat with a friend who is sharing location; Snapchat may show their location and recent actions there (support instructions). A missing friend does not prove they are offline or somewhere else. They may not be mutual friends, may have chosen Ghost Mode or a different audience, may have an expired location, or may lack connectivity or location permission.
How to find Places and public Snaps
Places
- Open Snap Map.
- Tap Places at the top.
- Search or browse recommendations, then tap a listing.
A Place page can contain community Snaps, reviews, hours, directions, phone or website details, reservations and ride options. Availability differs by venue and location. Tap the heart to save a Place to favorites. See Snapchat’s Places guide.

Public Snaps
Colored or populated areas can represent public Snaps from events, sports, news or local activity. A Snap attached to a place does not establish that its creator is still there.

How to share your location
- Open Snap Map and tap the gear icon.
- Choose the location-sharing audience and confirm the friends who should see you. Snapchat’s instructions are at How do I share my location?
Audience choices
- All mutual friends: eligible friends you have both added can see your shared location.
- My Friends, Except…: share broadly while excluding selected friends. Open the gear, choose this option and select exclusions.
- Only These Friends: share only with selected friends. Snapchat says selected friends are not notified merely because you added them to the list (selective-sharing help).
“Only while using” versus “Always”

The behavior depends on both Snapchat’s audience setting and your phone’s permission. Snapchat explains the distinction in its privacy and safety reminder and location-duration guidance.
How to use Ghost Mode
From Snap Map
- Open Snap Map.
- Tap the gear.
- Turn on Ghost Mode. Timer choices, where offered, vary by account and release.
From Settings
- Open your profile or My Account.
- Tap the Settings gear.
- Under My Privacy & Data, choose See My Location.
- Turn on Ghost Mode.
Ghost Mode hides your location from other people on Snap Map, although you may still see your own position. Snapchat still receives location data, and Snaps you submit to Snap Map can still appear publicly. Ghost Mode is therefore not the same as deleting location history. Details: Ghost Mode support. Repeat the path and switch it off when you want to resume sharing.
How to share a place without live sharing
Drop a pin
- Press and hold a location on Snap Map.
- Tap Send and choose a friend or Chat.
A dropped pin shares the selected meeting point, not continuous tracking. To remove it, tap the pin, open the three-dot menu, choose Delete Pin and confirm. Snapchat says recently shared pins or addresses may remain on the map for up to 24 hours (pin instructions).

Arrival Notifications send a push alert and Chat notice when you reach a chosen place. They require your device’s location permission to be set to Always, so they are more privacy-sensitive than a one-time pin.

Add from a friend’s profile
- Open the friend’s profile and scroll to Snap Map.
- Under Arrival Notifications, tap Add.
- Move the map, tap Set Location, turn the notification on, and choose One time or Every time.
Add from Chat
- Open the Chat and tap the Map icon.
- Under Arrival Notifications, tap Add, set the location, enable the alert and choose its duration.
For a saved home location, open the Chat, tap the Map icon, enable My Home and select One time or Every time. One-time alerts expire after 24 hours; recurring alerts remain until disabled. Up to ten arrival places can be saved. Stopping location sharing or enabling Ghost Mode turns these notifications off, and the recipient can opt out. How to mute a friend’s location
- Swipe right to Chat.
- Press and hold the friend’s name.
- Tap Location Settings and turn on the mute option.
Muting changes what you see; it does not remove the friend, block them or change what they share with other people. See Snapchat’s mute instructions.
Travel Notifications
Depending on account and region, Travel Notifications can include Friend in Town alerts and Recent Moves indicators above a Bitmoji. Recent Moves callouts may remain for up to 24 hours, and Ghost Mode can prevent a departure-city callout at the destination. To disable them, open My Account → Settings → Privacy Controls → Map and turn off Travel Notifications. Manage Visited Places and location history
A Place Visit may be created when you tag a Place in a Snap or Snapchat adds one from shared location data. Open Snap Map and tap Visited to review it.

Remove one visit
- Press and hold a Place in Visited.
- Tap Remove Place Visit.
Clear all history
- Open My Account and tap Settings.
- Tap Clear Data.
- Choose Clear Location History and confirm.
Snapchat says Place Visits are retained for the lifetime of the account unless removed or location history is cleared. This is separate from Ghost Mode. See Visited Places help.

Snap Map will not open
- Update Snapchat, fully close it, reopen it and restart your phone.
- Check your internet connection and device location permission.
- If it remains broken, use Snapchat’s in-app support flow.
A friend is missing or the location is old
- Confirm you added each other.
- Ask whether the friend shared with you or enabled Ghost Mode.
- Allow for a 24-hour expiry under Only while using.
- Check connectivity, app updates and device permissions.
There is no legitimate way to bypass another person’s privacy settings. An old point can simply be the last location recorded while the person used Snapchat.
A Snap appears while Ghost Mode is on
This can be normal: Ghost Mode controls location visibility, while submitted public Snaps are handled separately.
Arrival Notifications do not fire
- Verify Always permission and that the alert toggle is on.
- Check that the selected duration has not ended.
- Ensure you have not stopped sharing or enabled Ghost Mode.
- The recipient may have opted out.
Snap Map privacy checklist
- Start with Ghost Mode or Only These Friends rather than broad sharing.
- Use Only while using for temporary needs; reserve Always for trusted contacts and a defined trip.
- Review the audience and phone permission regularly.
- Turn off Always when the journey or alert ends.
- Remember that public Snaps can still appear on the Map.
- Clear location history separately if you want stored visits removed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can everyone see my location on Snap Map?
No. Location sharing is off by default. Visibility depends on your selected Snapchat audience, mutual-friend status, device permission, expiry and Ghost Mode.

Does Snapchat show my exact current location?
Not necessarily. Always permission can provide ongoing updates, while Only while using may leave a last-known point for up to 24 hours. Indicators and public Snaps can also be delayed.
Can I share a location without sharing live location?
Yes. Press and hold a map location, tap Send and choose a Chat to share a dropped pin.
How do I stop Arrival Notifications?
Open the relevant friend’s Chat or profile, open the Map and turn off the saved Arrival Notification. Enabling Ghost Mode or stopping location sharing also disables them.
