Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor most office work, 60Hz is adequate. A 100Hz monitor can make scrolling, cursor movement, and other motion look smoother, but the evidence cited here does not establish that moving from 60Hz to 100Hz increases productivity or prevents eye strain. Choose 100Hz if you value the smoother feel and the monitor is otherwise a good fit—not because the refresh rate guarantees better work or eye health.
What changes between 60Hz and 100Hz?
Refresh rate is how many times per second a display updates its image: 60Hz means 60 updates per second, while 100Hz means 100. Microsoft Support defines refresh rate this way. A higher rate can make moving images appear smoother; Ana Marta Carvalho, a senior program manager on Microsoft’s Graphics Team, wrote in a 2021 Microsoft DirectX post that higher refresh rates can make motion feel smoother, including inking and touch.

| Refresh rate | What it means | What to expect in office use |
|---|---|---|
| 60Hz | The display updates 60 times per second. | Generally sufficient for static tasks such as email, writing, and spreadsheets. |
| 100Hz | The display updates 100 times per second. | Can make scrolling and moving content feel smoother; the benefit is primarily a matter of preference. |
Will 100Hz make office work more productive?
Not on the evidence available here. Email, document writing, and spreadsheet work are mostly static, and Microsoft’s DirectX blog gives email and document writing as examples of productivity tasks that can run at 60Hz in a supported 60/120Hz Dynamic Refresh Rate mode. ITPro describes the effects of higher refresh rates in day-to-day office use as not transformative. Neither source establishes a general productivity gain from switching specifically from 60Hz to 100Hz.

The clearest reason to choose 100Hz is that you prefer the look and feel of motion while scrolling, moving windows, or following other on-screen movement. That preference may matter to your everyday comfort, but it is not the same as evidence that you will finish tasks faster.

What does the 94% smoothness figure actually measure?
A Dell Technologies-hosted report recounts a 2020 study in which observers judged motion shown at 120Hz to be smoother and sharper than motion at 60Hz 94% of the time. That figure concerns observers’ judgments in a 120Hz-versus-60Hz motion comparison. It does not measure office productivity, directly compare 100Hz with 60Hz, or show that a higher rate reduces eye strain.
Does a 100Hz monitor prevent eye strain?
That benefit is not established for the specific move from 60Hz to 100Hz. Microsoft discusses reduced eye strain and fatigue as a possible benefit in the context of minimizing flicker and ghosting, while MSI makes eye-care claims for its own products. Those statements do not demonstrate that 100Hz itself prevents eye strain for office users. Do not treat a refresh-rate specification or a manufacturer’s product claim as a guaranteed health outcome.

Will your computer run a monitor at 100Hz?
It depends on the monitor’s supported modes and on the computer’s graphics output, ports, and cable. A connection that works at a lower rate may not support the monitor’s desired resolution and refresh rate together. Microsoft warns that an asterisk beside a refresh rate in Windows indicates that the rate does not support the current resolution; ITPro also notes that some cable and hardware combinations can limit refresh rates.

Check the available rate in Windows
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- Select the display you want to check.
- Inspect the available refresh rates and choose the supported rate you intend to use. If a rate has an asterisk, Microsoft says it does not support the current resolution.
- Confirm the selected rate after connecting the monitor. If 100Hz is missing, check the monitor’s supported modes and the computer port and cable specifications, then try a connection that supports the required resolution and rate.
Do not confuse 100Hz with Dynamic Refresh Rate
Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) is a separate feature, not a setting that should be assumed to work on every high-refresh monitor. Microsoft’s current guidance says DRR requires a variable refresh rate (VRR) display capable of at least 120Hz. A 100Hz monitor therefore does not meet that stated minimum.

How to choose between two office monitors
Refresh rate is only one part of the decision. Compare the monitor’s resolution, screen size, panel type, ergonomics and stand adjustment, ports and cable support, warranty, and price as well. A well-suited 60Hz display can be a better choice than a 100Hz model that compromises on the features you need; there is no universal rule that office buyers should prefer 100Hz.
A 100Hz office-monitor example
MSI lists the PRO MP2412W as a 23.8-inch VA business monitor with a 1920 × 1080 resolution and a 100Hz refresh rate. MSI also describes the model as a work monitor and makes Eye Care and anti-flicker claims on its product page. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent proof that 100Hz reduces eye strain. Price and availability are not established here.
