UI/UX designers can create digital products, templates, and educational materials that may sell repeatedly after the initial work. But “passive income” does not mean effortless income: you still need to find customers, maintain products, handle support, and follow platform and licensing rules. There is no established typical income or guaranteed sales volume for these routes, so start with a small product and test whether people want it.
What does passive income mean for a UI/UX designer?
Here, passive income is shorthand for earning from reusable work rather than billing for every hour spent delivering it. A UI kit, template, guide, or class can be sold more than once, but creating it is only part of the job. You may also need to promote it, respond to buyers, update it as tools change, and check that its license and delivery format are valid.

Platform rules can add ongoing obligations: Webflow lists timely customer support among its template-designer expectations, Wix Studio reviews submissions for design, usability, and originality, and Figma requires seller responses and compatibility with its latest version. These are business activities, not fully hands-off earnings.

1. Sell UI kits, wireframes, or component libraries
Package interface elements for a specific workflow or audience rather than offering a generic bundle. A focused kit might include wireframes, reusable components, and concise instructions for adapting them. Figma lists wireframes, UI kits, asset libraries, educational resources, templates, and design systems among the file types creators can publish. However, Figma’s current English help pages say it is not approving new creators to sell paid files on Community. Check eligibility before building a plan around paid Community files; another marketplace or an independent storefront may be more viable.

Figma’s guide to publishing Community files and its paid-file selling guidance describe the relevant rules.
2. Build and sell a design system
A design system can be a larger, more structured product than a UI kit: organize its components, explain naming and usage, and state what buyers may do with it. Figma identifies design systems as a Community file type, but the same paid-file approval restriction applies there. Do not assume that publishing a free file makes it eligible for resale, or that buying a file includes future updates.

3. Create website templates
If you can build as well as design, submit website templates to a marketplace. Webflow says designers should provide responsive layouts, sound UX/UI, Webflow experience, and timely customer support. It advertises a 95% payout per template sale, saying it keeps 5% to cover payment processing; this is Webflow’s stated payout, not a promise of sales. Review the current Webflow template designer terms before relying on that figure.

Wix Studio also accepts template submissions from Partner Program members and reviews them for UX/UI quality, originality, and usability. Its marketplace page says it aims to review submissions within 60 business days; that is a stated review target, not a guaranteed turnaround. The separate offer that paid 100% of profits ended June 30, 2025, so do not treat it as current. See Wix Studio’s marketplace information for its submission details.

4. Sell Canva templates
Canva permits sellers to offer original templates, subject to its content-license conditions. If a template contains Pro Content, it must be distributed as a Canva template link; it cannot be sold as a PDF or another file type. Canva content also cannot be sold on a standalone basis. Check the current Canva Content License Agreement for the rules that apply to the assets and delivery method in your product.
5. Publish an ebook or practical guide
Turn a repeatable process into an original digital publication: for example, a usability-review method, a handoff checklist, or a portfolio-presentation guide. Canva allows original ebooks and other publications subject to its license conditions. Its license sets a maximum of 480,000 pixels for unedited Pro Content images in electronic publications, a technical limit that matters if you include those images. Skillshare also lists ebooks and guides as possible digital products for eligible sellers.
6. Make educational downloads
Checklists, workbooks, brushes, color palettes, and templates can package expertise into products that buyers can use at their own pace. Skillshare lists these as possible digital-product categories and lets creators set their product price, subject to platform rules and fees. A platform listing does not guarantee that customers will find or buy the product.
7. Teach a class and reuse its materials
A class can complement downloads such as templates or guides: teach a process, then offer practical materials that help learners apply it. On Skillshare, selling digital products requires a teaching account and a live class, so this is not a standalone-storefront option for someone who does not want to teach. Skillshare says it charges a 10% platform fee plus applicable transaction fees; its help page was last updated June 26, 2026. Payments also depend on Wise eligibility. Check Skillshare’s current digital-product rules.

8. License original design assets
Original icon sets, illustrations, and other assets can be licensed for reuse. Make sure you created the work and understand the marketplace’s licensing terms, including what buyers may use it for. Canva says its Free and Pro content cannot be repackaged and sold as standalone stock content; assets intended for stock sale must be created from scratch. The permitted uses of an asset depend on the relevant marketplace and license.
9. Make print-on-demand designs
Canva permits original designs on printed products such as posters, mugs, shirts, and stickers under its conditions. You cannot simply print Canva content as-is. Review both Canva’s license and the print provider’s terms before listing: a provider may require copyright representations that are not satisfied merely because a design can be used under a content license.
10. Recommend tools through useful content
If you already publish tutorials or careful tool comparisons, referral recommendations may fit naturally into that content. Only recommend products you genuinely find useful, verify that a relevant program is currently available and that you are eligible, and disclose the commercial relationship. Program terms and availability have not been established for the platforms discussed here, so do not assume that a link will earn a commission.
How to choose a route
Compare the work and obligations involved, not just the apparent ease of listing a product. A downloadable file, marketplace template, class, and referral recommendation each depend on different access rules and ongoing effort.
| Route | What to check |
|---|---|
| UI kits, component libraries, or design systems | Whether the marketplace currently approves sellers; documentation, compatibility, and update expectations. |
| Website templates | Submission and review standards, payout terms, support obligations, and platform experience requirements. |
| Canva templates or print products | Content license, permitted delivery format, originality, and the print provider’s terms where applicable. |
| Guides, downloads, or classes | Whether you can bring an audience, seller eligibility, platform fees, payment requirements, and whether teaching is required. |
| Licensed assets or referrals | Asset ownership and license scope, or current program eligibility and disclosure requirements. |
Before investing in a large catalog, define one audience and one problem, make a narrowly scoped product, and check demand. Then account for marketplace discovery versus the audience you must bring yourself, seller approval, fees, support, update needs, licensing, and delivery format. Platform terms change, so verify live rules before launch.
