How to Build a Polymarket TWAP Market Maker: Quote Engine Design

A Polymarket quote engine needs a fair-value input, a disciplined order lifecycle, live market-state synchronization, and inventory-aware risk controls. TWAP is an execution schedule, not a fair-value model.

A Polymarket market maker needs two related but distinct systems: a fair-value model that decides where to quote, and an order manager that places and maintains resting bids and asks. TWAP normally means a time-sliced execution schedule—not a way to calculate fair value or a synonym for continuous market making. If your bot uses TWAP to work an order, treat that schedule as a separate execution component.

What does TWAP mean in a Polymarket market-making strategy?

In its conventional sense, time-weighted average price (TWAP) is an execution algorithm: it breaks a larger order into smaller child orders spaced across a period, with the aim of reducing market impact. The Bank for International Settlements describes this approach in its September 2020 report on FX execution algorithms. It also notes that modern versions commonly randomize child-order timing to make activity less predictable and reduce signaling.

A market maker has a different core job. It maintains resting bids and asks, providing liquidity while taking inventory and execution risk in pursuit of the spread. Polymarket describes market makers as helping deepen order books, tighten spreads, support price discovery, and absorb trading flow as conditions change. A TWAP schedule can govern how a parent order is executed; it does not, by itself, determine what prices a market maker should quote.

Keep these components separate in the design:

  • Fair-value input: the strategy’s reference estimate for an outcome’s value.
  • Quote policy: the bid and ask prices and sizes placed around that reference, adjusted for market state and inventory.
  • Execution schedule: optional logic for distributing a larger trade over time, such as a TWAP schedule.

How should a Polymarket bot set its bid and ask?

Use the order book to observe available prices and depth, not as an automatic source of truth about fair value. Polymarket’s market-making guidance says the midpoint describes the current book, while the strategy must decide whether that midpoint represents fair value and how much risk to take around it.

Define a fair-value estimate independently, then let the quote policy choose offsets and sizes. A probability model, a blend with an external reference market, or a microprice derived from book conditions could serve as an engineering input; these are design options, not Polymarket requirements. The choice depends on the market and the signals the strategy can validate.

At a high level, a quoting policy can be expressed as:

bid_price = fair_value - bid_offset(inventory, market_state, risk_limits)
ask_price = fair_value + ask_offset(inventory, market_state, risk_limits)

The offsets need not be equal. A strategy may quote more cautiously on the side that would add to an unwanted position, or widen quotes when its risk controls call for less exposure. Choose sizes separately from prices: even a well-placed quote can create excessive exposure if its size is too large.

How do I keep Polymarket quotes synchronized with the order book?

Build a local market state from Polymarket’s real-time market stream rather than repeatedly polling for updates. The documented stream includes book snapshots, price-change events, last-trade-price events, and tick-size-change events. Keep the applicable tick size and minimum order size current when validating quotes.

A practical state-management sequence is:

  1. Initialize: obtain a current book snapshot and the relevant market constraints before enabling quotes.
  2. Apply events: process book and price-change messages to update the local view; track last trades and tick-size changes as separate market events.
  3. Validate before submission: check that each proposed price respects the live tick size and that its size meets the current minimum.
  4. Recover after disconnect: reconcile open orders and recent trades before resuming quote generation, so the bot does not act on stale assumptions about its orders or inventory.

These are synchronization safeguards, not guarantees about feed latency or uptime. If the engine cannot establish a trustworthy state, its risk policy should prevent it from continuing to quote on stale data.

Which order types and replacement rules suit passive quotes?

Polymarket identifies GTC (good till canceled) and GTD (good till date) as the primary order types for passive market making. Use GTC when a quote can remain live until the strategy cancels it; use GTD when it should expire at a known time, for example ahead of a scheduled catalyst. Post-only is available when an order must add liquidity rather than execute immediately as a taker.

Orders cannot be edited in place. When fair value, inventory, or a market constraint changes, the engine must cancel the old order and submit a replacement. Treat that as a state transition: track the cancellation and replacement results per order, and do not assume the new quote is live merely because the request was sent. Related price levels can be submitted as a batch, but handle each result individually.

How do you manage inventory in a prediction-market CLOB?

Track exposure by market and outcome, and update it on every execution. A fill changes both the position in outcome tokens and the balances available for later orders. Account for the assets required by each proposed order: a sell must be backed by the necessary outcome tokens, and the engine should not quote beyond available balances.

Inventory should affect both quote prices and sizes. Skewing either side can make it less attractive to add further to an imbalanced position while allowing the other side to reduce it. Set explicit position and order-size limits rather than relying on quote width alone to contain risk.

Useful controls include:

  • Price guards that reject quotes outside strategy-defined bounds.
  • Fill monitoring that updates exposure and available balances promptly.
  • Position and size limits enforced before order submission.
  • A kill switch that stops quoting and cancels open orders when system health or position limits require it.
  • A deliberate post-resolution reconciliation and redemption process.

How should a TWAP schedule interact with a quote engine?

Keep TWAP execution from overriding the market maker’s risk and quote controls. If a larger parent order is being worked over time, the schedule can determine when child orders are considered, while the quote engine still decides whether the current market state, fair value, inventory, balances, and limits permit an order at all.

Do not assume that evenly spaced child orders are automatically appropriate for a live prediction market. The BIS notes that current TWAP implementations typically randomize timing to reduce predictability and signaling. Any timing policy should still yield to the engine’s current safety checks; a scheduled child order is not a reason to submit a stale or out-of-bounds quote.

How should Polymarket fees and maker incentives enter the model?

Check the market’s current fee settings and applicable incentive terms at runtime or immediately before deployment. Polymarket’s Fees documentation, accessed October 7, 2026, says makers are not charged fees under the displayed schedule, while taker fees apply in certain markets and may fund maker rebates. The page describes geopolitical and world-events markets as fee-free and displays taker rates of 0.07 for Crypto, 0.05 for Sports, and 0.04 for Finance and Politics; it displays a maker fee rate of 0 across the listed categories. These are live documentation values, not permanent settings for every market or future period.

Polymarket also describes liquidity rewards for qualifying resting liquidity and maker rebates for maker liquidity that executes in eligible fee-enabled markets. Eligibility and calculations differ, so do not treat a displayed fee or incentive as guaranteed income. Net results depend on fills, inventory, adverse selection, applicable fees, and current program terms; the cited official documentation does not establish a profitability result.

What is a sensible build-and-launch sequence?

  1. Define the reference: specify how fair value is estimated and how often the strategy may update it.
  2. Write the quote policy: determine price offsets, sizes, inventory skew, and the conditions that prevent quoting.
  3. Implement live state: consume the market stream and validate tick size, minimum size, balances, and order state.
  4. Add order lifecycle handling: use the appropriate passive order type, process cancellations and replacements, and inspect each batch result.
  5. Enforce risk controls: set price, position, and size bounds; monitor fills; and make cancellation through a kill switch explicit.
  6. Reconcile on recovery and resolution: verify open orders and trades after reconnects, then handle resolved positions deliberately.
  7. Verify economics: confirm current market fees and incentive eligibility without assuming rebates or rewards will persist.
