The order is an editorial judgment. It weighs execution, originality, staying power, breadth, and importance to understanding the PS2 library, while comparing games within their genres rather than applying one mechanical checklist to a racing sim and a role-playing game. Metacritic’s critic and user rankings are separate perspectives; GameSpot and GamesRadar+ offer editorial retrospectives, and PlayStation.Blog has gathered developer favorites. Their overlapping candidates inform the shortlist, not a shared rubric or definitive order.

10. Okami
Okami turns its central visual idea into a way of playing. Its ink-wash world is not simply a striking backdrop: the Celestial Brush lets players draw strokes to affect the environment and solve problems. That connection between art style and interaction gives the adventure a personality few PS2 games could match.

Its scale and deliberate pace can feel indulgent, but the world’s mythic tone and expressive presentation make it an essential example of the console’s willingness to support unusual creative visions. It belongs on this list for the coherence of its artistic and mechanical identity.
#1 Best Overall
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
9. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec made the racing simulator feel like a centerpiece of the PS2’s early library. Its appeal rests on precision and progression: races reward learning how a car handles, choosing equipment, and improving gradually, rather than treating speed as the only skill.
As a genre representative, it is compelling because the driving, car collection, and career structure reinforce one another. Its place here recognizes a focused simulation experience that helped define what a big-budget console racer could be.
8. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Metal Gear Solid 2 builds stealth around observation and restraint. Guards, sightlines, and the consequences of being noticed make moving through a space feel like a series of decisions, while its cinematic presentation pushes the series toward a more ambitious scale.

Its narrative choices remain divisive, but the game’s willingness to unsettle expectations is part of its identity. It earns its spot for combining a tightly legible stealth toolkit with a bold, unusually self-conscious approach to blockbuster storytelling.
Rank #2
- Drive through the largest GTA environment ever -- The game has three cities players can explore, for a gaming area 5 times larger than Vice City
- Recruit new characters into a street gang and take over by leading drive-by shootings against rivals Steal all-new vehicles, including bicycles
- Improved fighting elements -- smoother hand-to-hand combat, plus the ability to hold a weapon in each hand
- New graphics elements as cars get dirty and even rust, the longer you drive them
- Advanced role-playing elements -- Unlike previous GTA characters, Carl can swim and he needs to eat to survive
7. Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X is one of the PS2’s defining role-playing games because its journey, characters, and battle system work toward a shared emotional arc. Turn-based combat makes tactical choices easy to read, while the pilgrimage structure gives the adventure a clear forward motion.
Its linearity is a real trade-off for players who want an open world, but it also helps the story maintain focus. The result is a polished, approachable RPG whose carefully paced journey remains central to the console’s legacy.
6. God of War II
God of War II refines the series’ combination of forceful combat, puzzles, and spectacle into a remarkably assured action adventure. Its set pieces are memorable because they are built around the player’s movement and abilities, not just presented as interruptions between fights.
The game’s momentum and clear feedback make its brutality feel deliberate rather than shapeless. It represents the PS2 action blockbuster at full confidence: technically ambitious, immediately readable, and structured to keep escalating.
Rank #3
- Capcom Classics Collection includes the following features -
- Experience more than 20 groundbreaking and revolutionary games of their time on one disk
- Hundreds of hours of nostalgic gameplay
- Enjoy a wealth of added features including original artwork, remixed music and playing tips
5. Gran Turismo 4
Where Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec established a potent early PS2 racing experience, Gran Turismo 4 makes the case for depth and breadth. Its driving remains the point, but a larger-feeling motorsport world gives players more room to pursue the cars and events that suit them.
That breadth is why it ranks above its predecessor here: it better captures the long-form appeal of the series as both a driving simulation and a hobby built around collecting, tuning, and mastering cars. Its distinction is not that every player needs every feature, but that the experience supports sustained engagement without losing its central focus.
4. Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 4 makes survival horror feel more immediate by placing combat and movement in a more direct relationship. Its encounters ask players to manage space, aim under pressure, and decide when to fight or conserve resources. The tension comes from those decisions as much as from the threats themselves.
It stands out for changing the feel of its genre while retaining the vulnerability that makes horror work. Few games balance action and unease with such clarity, and that combination makes it a defining PS2 experience.
Rank #4
- Jimmy has been sent back behind enemy lines to steal the HO-IX flying wing, an experimental Nazi weapon
- To get it, you'll have to survive six major missions and 20 unique levels of gameplay
- There's all-new non-player character animations, with superior 3D details -- even full facial expressions and lip synchs
- Use 20 authentic WWII weapons, from a Colt. 45 pistol to a German Panzerschrenk rocket launcher
- You can even drive vehicles like the motorized rail car, train, and mine cart
3. Shadow of the Colossus
Shadow of the Colossus is built around a deceptively simple premise: find a giant, climb it, and bring it down. Each encounter turns the landscape into a puzzle and the colossus into both an adversary and an environment. The sparse world and minimal storytelling make the player’s actions carry unusual weight.
Its rough edges are part of the experience’s scale, not a reason to mistake ambition for polish. The game’s restraint, atmosphere, and encounter design make it one of the clearest examples of the PS2 as a home for games that could be both mainstream and deeply idiosyncratic.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater expands stealth into a survival setting. Camouflage, food, injuries, and the jungle environment make preparation matter, while the series’ cinematic storytelling gives the mission a strong dramatic frame.

It ranks above its predecessor because its systems and setting feel especially unified: surviving in the field is inseparable from remaining unseen. The result is a richer stealth adventure that shows how a familiar series could evolve without abandoning its defining tension.

1. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas takes the open-world crime game and gives it an expansive sense of place. Its cities and countryside support a broad mix of missions and activities, while the story’s cast and setting give the journey a distinct identity. The scale is not just a map to cross; it is the foundation for a game that can shift between drama, action, and free-form exploration.
It takes the top spot because breadth, character, and freedom reinforce one another unusually well. Metacritic identifies it as its 2004 PS2 Game of the Year, and GameSpot also discusses it among the strongest PS2 experiences; those are meaningful historical recognitions, not proof of a universal all-time verdict.
How this ranking relates to other best-of lists
The candidate pool draws on different kinds of recognition, not one consensus chart. Metacritic publishes separate all-time PS2 critic and user lists, while GameSpot and GamesRadar+ present editorial best-of selections and PlayStation.Blog offers a developer perspective. Their recurring titles help identify games worth considering, but the lists differ in date, method, and emphasis, so their ranks should not be treated as interchangeable.

Choosing a PS2 edition to play or collect
This list ranks the original PlayStation 2 games, not later ports or remakes. The cited ranking and retrospective sources establish their PS2 context, but do not establish present-day stock, disc condition, prices, or which modern versions are currently available. Check the platform and edition on any listing before buying; a title with the same name on another system may not be the PS2 release.
