Zoom’s free Basic plan is free, and for most individual hosts its biggest practical limit is meeting length. A meeting hosted by a Basic user is generally capped at 40 minutes, while a host with a paid license can run meetings for up to 30 hours. Both Basic and Pro list up to 100 participants by default, so the attendee cap is not what separates them. Pro adds cloud recording and a set of meeting controls, and the license held by the host is what decides the time limit.
Is Zoom free?
Yes. Zoom’s own FAQ states: “Yes. Zoom offers a free Basic plan that includes video meetings and collaboration features.” A Basic account can host and schedule meetings and includes the core tools most people expect, such as chat, screen sharing, reactions, captions, waiting rooms, whiteboard, and annotation. The paid comparison in this article is Pro.

How the meeting time limit works
Zoom’s meeting-limit documentation says: “Almost all meetings scheduled and hosted by Basic (free) users, on Free and Paid accounts, are limited to 40 minutes.” In practice, a Basic host on a paid organization account still generally gets the 40-minute limit. The longer allowance applies only when the host holds a paid license.
The host’s license decides, not the attendees’
The limit follows the person who starts and hosts the meeting. If the host is on Basic and the attendees have paid accounts, the attendees’ licenses do not change the host’s limit. The same logic runs the other way: your own account type does not change the limit on a meeting someone else hosts.

The host-only exception
Zoom notes one exception. A meeting started by the host with no other participants present is not restricted while it remains active. The exception covers that specific situation and does not extend the limit once other people are in the meeting.

Recording: what “free” covers
Basic users can record to their computer, but the recording is saved locally and does not match everything cloud recording offers. Pro adds cloud recording, which is where the storage allowance applies.
Local recording on Basic
Local recording is available on supported Windows, macOS, and Linux desktop apps. Zoom says it does not support several options that cloud recording provides, including separate files for the active speaker, gallery view, and screen share, and audio transcription. If you need those outputs, the free plan is not enough.

Capacity can depend on how the account is set up rather than on the individual user alone. Zoom says a Basic user within a Business plan or higher can inherit the account’s default capacity. Large Meeting add-ons can raise capacity, but capacity from multiple Large Meeting add-ons cannot be combined. To see the capacity assigned to your own account, open the Zoom web portal and go to Profile and Account.

Choosing between them
- Basic suits short meetings where local recording is enough and the included tools cover your needs.
- Pro makes sense when recurring meetings regularly run past 40 minutes, or when you need cloud recording, livestreaming, polling, optional registration, or the reporting features Zoom lists.
- Basic Plus may fit if you only need an occasional longer meeting and the plan is available on your account.
- More than 100 participants calls for comparing Business, with its 300 default, or a Large Meeting capacity add-on.
- One-to-many presentations should be evaluated against Zoom Webinars rather than assumed to work like a larger meeting.
Pricing and timing
Current regional prices, taxes, billing terms, and promotions were not established in the sources checked for this article, so confirm them on Zoom’s pricing page or at checkout for your region before deciding. Plan features and availability change over time. Treat the limits above as Zoom’s documented values as of its support pages checked in 2026, and verify them in your account. Upgrade when you hit a concrete trigger, such as meetings that keep ending at the 40-minute mark or a need for cloud recording, rather than in advance.
