Most stuck trays can be cleared without opening the console. If the tray still will not move, the cause is usually a mechanical fault inside the optical drive, such as a slipping belt or dirt in the mechanism, and that calls for internal repair. Whether that repair is worth attempting depends on your console model, your comfort with disassembly, and whether the drive you have can be matched to a replacement.
Identify your console and describe the fault
Before following any physical steps, confirm which console you have. The original Xbox 360, the Xbox 360 S, and the Xbox 360 E use different case layouts and, in some cases, different optical drives. Physical access instructions written for one model may not match another, so check the model on the console’s label or the packaging before proceeding.

Then describe the failure as precisely as you can. The fault usually falls into one of three patterns:
- Tray will not open: the eject button does nothing, or the tray starts to move and stops.
- Tray opens but will not close: the tray stays out and does not retract when you press eject again.
- Tray sticks only when empty: it closes and opens normally with a disc inside, but jams or fails to move when there is no disc.
Each pattern points to a different next step, so note which one matches before you move on.

Try the least invasive fix first
A manual eject and an obstruction check should always come before any internal work. Microsoft’s Xbox troubleshooting reference recommends using the manual eject method to remove a stuck disc and then checking for obstructions. Use the method documented for your specific model, and do not force, pry, or repeatedly push the tray. Forcing the tray can damage the drive mechanism or the disc.
- Power the console off completely and unplug the power cable from the wall or the power brick.
- Wait a few seconds, then reconnect power and turn the console on.
- Press the eject button once and watch the tray. If it opens, remove the disc slowly, holding it by the edges.
- Look inside the tray and around the drive opening for a broken disc fragment, a torn disc label, a sticker, or a loose piece of debris. Remove anything you can reach without tools.
- Press the eject button again to see whether the tray now closes and opens normally. Try this with and without a disc, using a disc you can afford to lose if you suspect a cracked disc.
If the tray opens and closes normally after step 5, the problem was most likely a disc or debris, and no repair is needed. If the eject button still fails, the problem is inside the drive and you have reached the point where the repair decision starts.
What an empty-tray jam can tell you
A tray that sticks when empty but works with a disc in place can point to a slipping belt or dirt inside the drive. Repair guidance from iFixit describes this as one possible cause, and it is a useful clue rather than a confirmed diagnosis. The same symptom can also come from other mechanical or eject-control faults, so do not assume the belt is the problem until you have checked for debris and confirmed the drive model.

Know where the repair boundary is
Any belt replacement requires opening the console and removing the optical drive. iFixit’s guide for the Xbox 360 S walks through console and drive disassembly and warns about delicate plastic clips that break easily. That guide is written for the S model. Do not assume its disassembly sequence applies to the original Xbox 360 or the Xbox 360 E, or to every revision of the optical drive.
Stop and seek professional repair if any of these apply:
- You cannot confirm your console model or the drive installed inside it.
- You are not comfortable removing screws, separating plastic clips, and handling flat cables.
- The console is still under warranty, since opening it may affect warranty coverage.
- The console is valuable or irreplaceable to you and you have no spare parts to work with.
Compare the three repair options
| Option | Invasiveness | Tools | Damage risk | Compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual eject and obstruction check | None; no case opening | None | Low if you do not force the tray | Not applicable |
| Internal belt repair (drive stays installed or is removed as the guide describes) | High; console and drive disassembly | Precision screwdriver and a plastic spudger, according to the S-model guide | Moderate; plastic clips and flat cables can break | Belt fit must be checked against your drive; not verified for every model |
| Replacement optical drive | High; full drive swap | Similar to belt repair | Moderate to high | Drive is paired to the console through its drive key; a different drive may not work |
Costs, success rates, and repair times for these options were not established in the sources reviewed, so compare them on the factors above rather than on price.

Why a replacement drive is not a simple fix
A replacement optical drive is a valid alternative in principle, but it is not a drop-in part. iFixit’s optical-drive replacement guide explains that the drive is designed to work with a particular console and that the drive key matters. A drive from a different console, or one that does not carry the matching key, may fail to read discs or may not work at all. Before buying any replacement, identify the drive currently installed, confirm the console it was designed for, and check that the part you intend to buy is compatible with your model.

If you have identified the installed drive and decided to proceed with internal repair, the parts and tools below are the ones named in the repair material. Fit and availability were not verified for this article, so confirm them against your specific drive before ordering.
- Xbox 360 DVD drive belt: the replacement belt associated with slipping-belt tray failures. Confirm it matches your drive before purchase.
- Precision screwdriver set: needed for the case and drive screws in the S-model guide. Use a size that fits the screw heads without stripping them.
- Plastic spudger: used to separate plastic clips without scratching or cracking the housing.
These tools do not help with a basic manual eject. Buy them only if you have decided that internal repair is the right next step.

Current availability and what remains uncertain
This article reflects the repair guidance available at the time of writing. Official Xbox Support content did not surface a tray-specific procedure that could be confirmed, so the detailed physical steps come from third-party repair documentation rather than from Microsoft. Current prices, stock levels, and seller listings were not checked. If an official procedure appears for your model, follow it over any third-party guidance.
Also note that the belt diagnosis is inferred from symptoms, not tested on a specific console. You can confirm it only by opening the console and inspecting the belt and drive mechanism yourself or with a technician.
