What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Start by identifying the exact symptom and your cooker’s model: hard or mushy rice, uneven cooking, steam escaping, and a cooker that will not start have different likely causes. Check the water and menu first for texture problems; check the pan, lid, vents, and power for operating problems. Model-specific instructions matter, so use your cooker’s manual before adjusting settings or replacing parts.
First, identify the symptom and model
“Not cooking properly” is not one fault. Note whether the rice is too hard, too soft, uneven, scorched, or overflowing—or whether the cooker will not start or leaks steam. Find the model number on the cooker’s label and consult its manual. The detailed troubleshooting examples below from Zojirushi’s NP-NWC manual apply to that model family, not automatically to every Zojirushi cooker.

Before cleaning or handling removable parts, unplug the cooker and let it cool. Do not open or attempt to repair internal electrical components.

Check the measurement and menu
Measure rice with the cup supplied with the cooker, then add water to the line for the chosen rice and menu. Using a different cup or the wrong water line can change the result. Confirm that you selected the intended cooking menu; Zojirushi lists inaccurate water measurement, dry or old rice, and menu choice among possible causes of hard or soft rice in its rice cooker guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Compact: With its compact size and ability to cook as little as 1/2 a cup of rice or oats, this rice cooker is ideal for small families or couples
- Steel Cut Oatmeal Menu Setting: This is a special menu setting for cooking steel-cut oatmeal. The cooking flow is different than the regular Porridge setting and has a shorter completion time
- Brown or GABA Brown Menu Setting: The Brown Rice Activation (or GABA Brown Setting) activates brown rice by keeping the temperature inside the pan at about 104 degrees F for 2 hours. By activating brown rice, GABA, one of the nutrients contained in brown rice, increases its amount by 1.5 times as much as that contained in non-activated brown rice
- Long Grain White Menu Setting: This is a special menu setting for cooking long-grain white rice. The cooking flow is different than the White rice setting because long-grain white rice cooks differently than short or medium-grain white rice
- Easy to Transport and Hassle Free Storing: It can be transported easily with the help of a fold-down handle. The built-in retractable power cord makes moving and storing hassle-free
Consider the rice and conditions
Rice brand, harvest, storage, and room or water temperature can affect texture, according to the NP-NWC manual. If measurement and menu are correct, make a small adjustment to the water on a later batch and note the result. The NP-NWC manual suggests adjusting the water level by 1–2 mm to suit preference; this is model-specific guidance, not a universal setting. Zojirushi’s general advice is to add a little water when rice is hard and use a little less when it is soft.
Allow for the programmed cycle
Some Micom models include programmed soaking and steaming stages, so a longer cycle than stovetop cooking does not alone indicate a fault. Check the selected menu and the manual’s expected cycle behavior before assuming the cooker is failing. Zojirushi explains these stages in its rice cooker FAQ.

If the cooker will not start or buttons do not respond
For the NP-NWC models, Zojirushi’s manual recommends checking these points before seeking service:
Recommended Free Tools
- Make sure the power plug is securely connected.
- Check that the inner cooking pan is seated correctly.
- Confirm the cooker is not still in Keep Warm mode.
- Close the outer lid securely. Rice or debris in the hook holes can interfere with closure, so inspect those areas.
- If an error code appears, look it up in the manual for your exact model; codes and remedies can differ.
If steam escapes around the lid
With the cooker unplugged and cool, check that the inner lid is clean, correctly installed, and undamaged, and that its gasket is seated and intact. The NP-NWC manual also identifies the pressure-release and safety-valve paths as inspection points for those models. Clean and reinstall removable parts as the manual directs.

A gasket that has hardened, lost elasticity, or continues to leak may need replacement, according to Zojirushi’s maintenance guidance. Do not try to fix a leak by opening the cooker or altering internal parts.
If rice cooks unevenly, scorches, or boils over
Uneven cooking or scorching
Check that the pan is not deformed and that its exterior and the cooker’s contact surfaces are clean and dry. The NP-NWC manual identifies rice or debris on the pan bottom or side sensor, as well as insufficient rinsing, as possible contributors to scorching. Remove residue using the cleaning method permitted by your model’s manual.

Boiling over
Recheck the menu, rice quantity, and water amount, and confirm the steam-vent set is attached. Zojirushi’s general guidance also associates overflow with excess ingredients or water and an incorrect menu choice. The specific checks in the NP-NWC manual should be treated as model-specific.
Clean the removable parts and keep vents clear
After unplugging the cooker and letting it cool, clean removable inner-lid and steam-vent parts as instructed in the manual, dry them, and reinstall them correctly. Zojirushi’s steam vent cap explanation describes the vent’s role and cleaning. The NS-TSC manual says to keep the underside air vent clear; Zojirushi’s maintenance guidance also recommends clearing the air intake and exhaust port and checking sensors and pan-contact surfaces.

Follow the cleaning restrictions in your own manual. Do not use abrasive tools or put parts in a dishwasher unless the manual permits it.
When to replace a part or request service
Choose among cleaning, a model-matched replacement, and service based on what you find:
| What you find | Reasonable next step |
|---|---|
| Incorrect measurement, residue, or a removable part installed incorrectly | Correct the setup or clean and reinstall the part as the manual directs. |
| A visibly deformed inner pan, degraded gasket, or persistently clogged or difficult-to-remove vent cap | Check whether the affected part is replaceable and verify compatibility with the exact cooker model. |
| No evident worn or damaged part, or the problem persists after the model’s checks | Contact Zojirushi Customer Service or an authorized repair center. |
Zojirushi’s parts FAQ says replacement parts are available and advises having the model number ready. Do not assume a generic or third-party part fits: confirm compatibility before ordering. Its maintenance guidance recommends contacting Customer Service or an authorized repair center when poor cooking continues without an apparent worn or damaged part.
