Prepare for at least 72 hours without electricity, but do not treat that period as an estimate of when power will return. Landslides can leave roads, communications and utilities hazardous even after the ground stops moving. Follow your electric or hydro utility and local emergency authorities for incident-specific outage, evacuation and safety information; this title alone does not establish that a particular facility has been damaged or indicate how many customers are affected.

Make a plan for a prolonged outage and possible evacuation

Start with a household plan and emergency kit that account for everyone who lives with you, including children, older adults, people with disabilities, pets and anyone with special health needs. The Government of Canada recommends being prepared to care for yourself for a minimum of 72 hours. That is a general preparedness benchmark, not a forecast for a landslide-related outage; use local authorities’ advice if it differs.

Put essentials where you can reach them without power

  • Keep flashlights and spare batteries accessible. Use flashlights rather than candles during an outage.
  • Keep a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, a charged power bank and offline copies of essential contact details with your emergency supplies. Choose a radio that can receive local broadcasts.
  • Know how to shut off household water, and consider how to protect pipes from freezing if that is a risk where you live.
  • Identify more than one evacuation route where possible. Do not rely on internet maps or cellular service being available.
  • Keep smoke and carbon monoxide alarms working, with battery backup.

The Government of Canada’s emergency preparedness guidance and power outage guidance cover household planning and outage precautions.

Plan how to get reliable updates

Before an outage, identify the official information channels for your local emergency-management authority and electric or hydro utility, along with any designated community gathering or assistance locations. A radio can receive local broadcasts without home internet; a phone can access official updates only if it has power and the relevant network service is available. Keep the phone charged, use a power bank for critical devices and conserve battery if service fails.

Information option What it depends on How to prepare
Battery-powered or hand-crank radio Power from batteries or the crank, and reception of local broadcasts Check that it receives local stations and keep it accessible.
Phone or other connected device Device charge and working cellular or internet service Save official contacts offline and keep a charged backup battery.

Arrange for medical and other essential power needs

If anyone depends on powered medical equipment, refrigerated medicine or electrically powered treatment, speak with their clinician and equipment provider before an outage. Work out how long equipment or medication can safely go without power, what backup power is suitable, where care can continue if needed, and how to evacuate if elevators are unavailable. Keep the relevant instructions and contact information in a form you can access without internet.

Do not assume a household generator or battery will safely support a medical device or keep medicine at the required temperature. Confirm the specific equipment’s power needs and backup arrangements with the clinician, manufacturer or provider. If your plan depends on a facility or support service, ask that provider what its outage and evacuation arrangements are.

Choose backup power by the job it must do

First list the loads you actually need to support—for example, communications and lighting, or a medical device or refrigerator. Compare runtime, how the unit is recharged or supplied with fuel, placement and noise, connection method, maintenance, and applicable local codes or permits. This is a planning framework, not a model-level performance comparison.

Backup-power option Carbon monoxide consideration Connection and planning
Battery- or solar-powered portable unit The cited Government of Canada guidance says these units do not emit carbon monoxide. Check that its capacity and runtime suit the intended loads; do not assume it can support every appliance or medical device.
Portable fuel-burning generator It must be operated outdoors. Canadian guidance calls for at least 6 m (20 ft) from homes or buildings, with exhaust directed away from openings; follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local rules. Determine essential loads and fuel needs. Ask the utility or a licensed electrician about safe installation and connections.

To connect a generator to a home’s wiring, the Government of Canada says an approved transfer panel and switch must be installed by a qualified electrician. Never connect a generator through a wall outlet. The U.S. Department of Energy’s backup power guidance also addresses permits and codes, maintenance, periodic testing and fuel planning for businesses; follow the rules that apply in your jurisdiction.

During a landslide emergency or outage, prioritize safety

Keep away from unstable ground and damaged utilities

Follow evacuation notices and local authority directions. Do not travel toward a slope, hydropower facility, river or debris to inspect damage. A slide can remain hazardous after movement stops: British Columbia’s PreparedBC landslide guidance says to stay away from the slide area and broken utilities, including electricity and gas lines. Watch for possible flooding, report hazards without approaching them, and keep clear of downed power lines.

Report the outage and conserve communications

When safe, check or report the outage through your local utility’s official channels. Listen to local radio and follow emergency-authority updates. Preserve phone charge for essential communication, and avoid unnecessary driving when roads or traffic signals may be disrupted.

Use a portable fuel-burning generator outdoors, at least 6 m (20 ft) from homes or buildings under the cited Canadian guidance, with exhaust directed away from openings. Use a working carbon monoxide alarm and follow the generator manufacturer’s instructions. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave immediately for fresh air, call your local emergency number and do not go back inside until a qualified professional says it is safe.

Leave if the home is no longer safe

Prepare to evacuate if flooding, cold, heat or another hazard makes staying unsafe. Take your emergency kit and follow local instructions. If your household cannot evacuate safely without assistance, include that need in your plan and arrange support before an emergency where possible.

When electricity returns, reconnect carefully

Use the Government of Canada’s sequence for restoring household appliances: turn heating-system thermostats up first, reconnect the refrigerator and freezer, wait 10 to 15 minutes before reconnecting other appliances, and make sure a hot-water heater is full before powering it. Keep away from downed electrical lines and report them. Follow official food-safety advice for food exposed to the outage; the appropriate advice can depend on the food and conditions.

What landslide damage to hydropower means for households

A landslide and a power outage occurring together do not, by themselves, establish the condition of a hydropower facility, which circuits are affected or how long repairs will take. Get those facts from the named utility and local authorities rather than inferring them from the event. The available evidence does not establish an affected-customer count or a restoration time for a particular incident.

Facility inspection and repair are operator responsibilities, not household tasks. A 2026 notice from China’s National Energy Administration addresses landslides and mudslides as secondary hazards and calls for inspections of hydropower structures, gates, hoists, emergency power, pressure equipment and communications, along with geological monitoring and coordination. That notice is specific to China; it is not a universal rule for every jurisdiction. In the United States, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s emergency-action-plan material describes federal dam guidance and coordination among dam owners, emergency responders and law enforcement. Neither provides a basis for guessing the condition of a facility in a specific incident.
