Zero Trust Security: How to Protect Access Across Remote Work

Zero trust replaces assumptions based on network location with resource-specific access decisions informed by identity, device context, policy, and monitoring.

Zero trust is essential to a modern workplace because a user or device connecting from an office network is not automatically safer or more trustworthy than one connecting from home or a cloud environment. Instead of trusting network location, zero-trust architecture evaluates whether a specific identity and device should access a specific resource, then applies policy and monitoring as conditions change.

What is zero trust security?

Zero trust is an approach to designing access controls, not a single product or switch. The core principle is to avoid granting implicit trust based on a user’s or device’s physical location, network connection, or ownership. NIST’s SP 800-207, published in August 2020, frames the goal as protecting resources rather than treating network segments as the main basis for security.

“Zero trust focuses on protecting resources (assets, services, workflows, network accounts, etc.), not network segments, as the network location is no longer seen as the prime component to the security posture of the resource.”

In practice, the access question becomes: should this user, device, service, or account be allowed to reach this particular application, dataset, or workflow right now? Authentication establishes identity; authorization determines what that identity may do. NIST describes those as distinct decisions made before a session to an enterprise resource is established.

Why is zero trust important for remote work?

Work now routinely spans offices, homes, personal devices, and cloud services. A traditional perimeter-based model can treat a connection inside the corporate network as a broad signal of trust. But a network boundary alone says little about whether a particular user is authorized for a sensitive resource or whether the device making the request meets the organization’s requirements.

Remote work is not, by itself, proof that every organization is equally exposed, and zero trust does not prevent every breach. Its value is that it makes access decisions depend on the relevant identity, device, and resource rather than assuming that one location is inherently safe. This is useful for hybrid workforces, partners, and services distributed across on-premises and multiple cloud environments.

How does zero trust work?

A zero-trust architecture coordinates policy decisions with enforcement and monitoring. Depending on the environment, an organization may use identity checks, device assessment, policy enforcement points, gateways, service identities, and authentication and authorization modules. These are architectural building blocks, not a mandatory checklist of products.

  1. Identify the resource and request. Define which application, service, data, or workflow is being requested and by whom or what.
  2. Authenticate identity and evaluate device context. Verify the user or service identity and consider relevant device information before access is granted.
  3. Apply granular authorization. Use policy to decide whether that identity and device can access that specific resource, and what actions are allowed.
  4. Enforce the decision. A policy enforcement component allows or blocks the requested connection in accordance with the decision.
  5. Monitor and adjust. Use telemetry to review access conditions, refine rights, or require step-up authentication when appropriate.

For cloud-native applications, the challenge includes users and services communicating across loosely coupled components in cloud and on-premises environments. NIST’s SP 800-207A, published September 13, 2023, describes coordinating identity-tier and network-tier policies, enforcement components, secure communications, and monitoring. Telemetry can help fine-tune access rights and trigger stronger authentication when the context calls for it.

What does adopting zero trust involve?

Adoption is an organizational architecture project, not an instant configuration change. Teams need to understand which resources matter, how identities and devices are managed, where access decisions are enforced, and what telemetry is available to maintain policy over time. A design suitable for one organization may not fit another’s systems, risks, or operating model.

NIST’s SP 1800-35, a 2025 implementation practice guide, documents 19 example implementations developed with 24 collaborators. Those examples and implementation lessons can inform planning; they are not comparative product tests or proof that a particular design is best for every enterprise.

What zero trust does—and does not—promise

  • It does: shift access decisions toward specific resources and validated identity and device context.
  • It does: support access across distributed locations and cloud and on-premises systems through coordinated policy and enforcement.
  • It does not: mean that every request must be denied, or that users must repeatedly sign in for every action.
  • It does not: guarantee that breaches cannot happen or eliminate the need for monitoring and sound security operations.
  • It is not: one appliance, subscription, or universal configuration that can be deployed without organizational planning.
