Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf a Magento 2 _cl table keeps growing while storefront changes arrive late, first check whether the scheduled Mview update is processing its backlog. In schedule mode, database triggers record changes to subscribed tables; cron later applies those changes to the relevant indexes. Repeated failures of indexer_update_all_views can leave change records waiting. A large changelog is a symptom to diagnose—not a reason to truncate the table.
What Mview changelog tables do
Magento’s indexers can use Materialized View (Mview) subscriptions to track changes to selected database tables. A view declaration in mview.xml identifies an indexer and its subscriptions, including the observed table and the column used as the entity identifier. In scheduled mode, the framework creates MySQL triggers that record changed entity IDs in a changelog table. The view update process then handles those records. Adobe describes this architecture in its indexing documentation.

Changelog tables commonly use the indexer’s table name followed by _cl; Adobe’s example is catalog_category_product_cl. The table records an auto-incrementing version_id alongside entity identifiers that need reindexing. Its size alone does not establish whether the index is healthy, how long updates should take, or when cleanup is due.

Before changing anything, note whether the installation is Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce, its exact version and deployment type, the affected indexer, and whether that indexer is configured for update on save or update by schedule. Adobe’s support procedure for oversized logs discussed below is specifically scoped to Adobe Commerce 2.2.x and 2.3.x; verify release-specific behavior before applying it to another version.

Use the CLI to inspect the available indexers, current modes, and status:
bin/magento indexer:info
bin/magento indexer:show-mode
bin/magento indexer:status
The Magento_Indexer module reference also documents indexer:reindex, indexer:reset, and indexer:set-mode. Do not use a reset or full reindex as a diagnostic substitute: first determine which indexer is affected and what its status indicates.

Update on Save versus Update by Schedule
| Mode | How index changes are processed | Operational implication |
|---|---|---|
| Update on Save | Index changes are applied immediately after entity changes. | Updates happen on the write path rather than waiting for scheduled processing. |
| Update by Schedule | Cron processes index updates; Mview records subscribed changes for later handling. | Storefront freshness depends on reliable scheduled processing and backlog handling. |
Adobe recommends scheduled indexing in some scenarios to avoid deadlocks associated with interdependent edits. Availability can also depend on the indexer and release: Customer Grid did not support scheduled mode before 2.4.8; Adobe’s current index-management documentation says support is available from 2.4.8 and is the default from that release onward. Check the index management documentation for the applicable release.
If changelog rows are accumulating, check scheduled processing
When changes are recorded but the changelog grows, determine whether cron is successfully applying the view updates before considering any cleanup. Adobe says repeated unsuccessful runs of indexer_update_all_views can cause oversized logs. Its support guidance recommends checking cron history and logs; it applies specifically to Adobe Commerce 2.2.x and 2.3.x.

- Wide Application: The server rack wall mount maximizes the use of available space, suitable for retail venues, classrooms, offices, and other places where space is limited.
- Inspect cron history. Check the
cron_scheduletable forindexer_update_all_viewsentries that are neither successful nor pending. Adobe’s support article gives an SQL query for finding these entries. - Read the relevant application log. For the versions covered by its guidance, Adobe points to
var/log/cron.logon 2.3.1+ and 2.2.8+, andvar/log/system.logon earlier versions. Use the log appropriate to the installation and investigate the underlying job failure. - Restore reliable job execution. Resolve the cron or application error, then verify that subsequent scheduled updates complete and the backlog is being processed.
See Adobe’s version-scoped procedure in “Changes in the database are not reflected on the storefront”, updated August 18, 2026. Do not assume its exact remediation applies unchanged to newer releases.
If changes do not appear in the changelog, investigate capture
If changing an entity creates no corresponding changelog record, the problem may be change capture rather than an update backlog. Adobe identifies missing database triggers as a likely suspect in the versions covered by its support procedure. Check that the expected subscription and trigger exist before treating the issue as a cleanup problem.

For the Adobe Commerce 2.2.x and 2.3.x cases in that article, Adobe’s suggested way to recreate triggers is to switch the affected indexer to realtime and then back to schedule. It recommends backing up the database before database manipulation and using maintenance mode with cron disabled during the mode switch to reduce the risk of database locks. Confirm that the procedure is appropriate for the installed release and environment before applying it.

A growing _cl table and repeated full reindexing are different symptoms, though either can delay storefront updates. Mview’s ordinary role is to process changes for affected entities; a full reindex rebuilds all indexing-related tables. Adobe warns that repeated full reindexing can degrade performance and contribute to database table locks, and recommends native Mview partial reindexing for normal change handling.

To look for recently fully reindexed indexers, Adobe provides this query:
SELECT * FROM indexer_state WHERE updated > NOW() - INTERVAL 15 MINUTE;
The 15-minute window is part of this diagnostic query; it is not a changelog-size measure or a performance benchmark. If full reindex activity appears, investigate manual CLI invocations and third-party modules that initiate reindexing or invalidate indexers. Adobe’s guidance is in “Slow performance due to full reindexing”, updated August 19, 2026.
Check custom Mview declarations after dependency changes
For a custom indexer or integration, verify that its mview.xml subscription still names the correct table and identifier column after module or dependency upgrades. Adobe documents a specific Commerce Data Export case involving SaaS Data Export 103.3.0 or later: a renamed table left custom Mview code pointing to a stale table name. The fix in that case is to correct the subscription’s table name. This example is version-specific; a missing changelog table does not by itself prove that a rename caused the problem. See Adobe’s Data Export troubleshooting article, updated August 18, 2026.
Handle cleanup as a controlled change
Magento distinguishes the scheduled update job, indexer_update_all_views, from indexer_clean_all_changelogs, which cleans indexer view changelogs. The module reference names both jobs, but does not establish a universal cleanup cadence, table-size threshold, or manual SQL purge recipe. Do not routinely truncate _cl tables or delete their rows directly: doing so can discard pending change records without fixing the reason processing fell behind.
If the built-in cleanup job is not operating as expected, investigate its scheduling and failures for the installed release, and review the consequences of any proposed manual database change with the team responsible for the indexer. Back up the database before database manipulations and avoid them during high site load, as Adobe cautions in its oversized-log guidance.
