Zero-Budget Web Dev, Part 2: Mobile Breakpoints and a Clean AI Starting Point

Find breakpoints from real layout problems, start with fluid CSS, give an AI assistant focused project context, and check its changes across viewport sizes.

To make a page mobile-friendly, first find where its content or layout actually breaks, then adjust the layout at that width. To get useful help from an AI coding assistant, give it a deliberate starting context: the relevant project files, the behavior you want, and clear limits on the change. Treat the generated code as a proposal, then inspect it at real viewport sizes and review the diff.

Find the layout problem before choosing a breakpoint

Resize the browser or inspect the page at a narrow viewport. Look for the first concrete failure: navigation links wrapping, cards becoming cramped, a fixed-width section pushing past the screen edge, or text becoming difficult to scan. That failure—not a particular phone model—is the reason to change the layout.

Anthropic’s responsive-layout guide offers 768px and 1024px as example breakpoint widths, but says the right breakpoint depends on the content. For example, if a navigation menu’s items wrap at 920px, that may be the point where the menu needs a different layout. These figures are examples, not universal standards.

Choose between a breakpoint and a fluid layout

Use a media query when a component needs a deliberate change at a particular width—for instance, when a horizontal navigation should become a compact menu. Use an intrinsic layout when the component can adapt naturally to the available space. Grid is useful when both rows and columns matter; Flexbox suits one-dimensional arrangements that can wrap.

A mobile-first grid

Start with a single column, then add columns as the available width allows. The values below illustrate the pattern; choose thresholds by checking when your own content has room to breathe.

.cards {
  display: grid;
  grid-template-columns: 1fr;
  gap: 1rem;
}

@media (min-width: 40rem) {
  .cards {
    grid-template-columns: repeat(2, minmax(0, 1fr));
  }
}

@media (min-width: 64rem) {
  .cards {
    grid-template-columns: repeat(3, minmax(0, 1fr));
  }
}

For a card grid that should fill whatever space is available without several fixed column-count breakpoints, CSS Grid’s auto-fit and minmax() can be a better fit:

  gap: 1rem;
}

The Anthropic guide also demonstrates fluid type with clamp() and recommends testing a change at more than one width. A community-maintained mobile-responsive repository describes fluid widths, scaling type, reflowing cards and an optional Playwright overflow checker. It is an example resource, not a required dependency or a web standard.

Give an AI assistant a clean, useful starting point

A vague request such as “make this page mobile friendly” leaves the assistant to guess which page, what counts as success and how much of the project it may change. Include the target, the observed problem, the desired narrow-screen behavior, relevant files and boundaries—for example, ask it to leave unrelated components and desktop behavior unchanged.

A practical prompt might be:

Update the product-card layout in src/components/ProductGrid.css.
At narrow widths, show one card per row; add columns only when each card
has enough room for its content. The current issue is that cards become
cramped and the page scrolls horizontally. Keep the existing colors and
card markup unchanged. First explain your proposed approach; then make the
smallest necessary CSS change.

Project context matters, but irrelevant context can distract. In its Copilot tutorial, GitHub starts with a repository that has a README and a local project workspace. Its initial research stage closes open editor tabs so Copilot is not influenced by unrelated code or information in those tabs. That is a Copilot-specific tutorial step, not a rule for every AI assistant. Keep useful project documentation and constraints; the goal is to reduce noise, not erase context the assistant needs.

Make the project easy to enter and recover

A repository with a README, a local working copy and a dedicated working branch gives you a recognizable place to start and a safer way to review changes. The README can briefly say how to run the site and where the relevant page or styles live. For browser compatibility requirements, state the project’s target explicitly rather than expecting an assistant to infer it. Chrome for Developers’ Modern Web Guidance discusses recording a Baseline target in project guidance such as AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md.

Review and test the generated change

AI output is a proposal, not a guarantee. Chrome for Developers warns that “AI coding agents tend to default to older, outdated solutions to modern web development problems.” It also recommends accounting for project requirements and browser-support criteria. A plausible-looking media query may still use an unsuitable approach or conflict with your project’s support needs.

  1. Ask for the reasoning. Have the assistant explain what failed, why it chose a breakpoint or intrinsic layout, and which files it changed.
  2. Inspect the diff. Check that the edit addresses the layout issue without unrelated changes. GitHub’s Copilot workflow includes reviewing changed files and committing successful iterations.
  3. Check several viewport widths. Anthropic’s example workflow tests at 320px and 512px. Those are illustrative checks, not a complete device list; also test around the width where the layout changes and at a wider desktop size.
  4. Look for remaining failures. Check for horizontal scrolling, overlapping content, awkward wrapping and controls that are too cramped to use.
  5. Keep a known-good point. Commit a successful iteration so you can return to it if a later change makes the page worse.

GitHub notes that Copilot responses are non-deterministic, so examples and results can differ. If a change misses the mark, provide the observed failure and the relevant file or constraint, then ask for a narrower revision instead of accepting a broad rewrite.

Choose the right way to get help

For a new page or a learning exercise, a browser-based assistant can help draft and explain a responsive foundation. For an existing project, a codebase-aware assistant can inspect files and propose edits within that project. Anthropic describes Claude.ai and Claude Code in those respective roles in its responsive-layout guide; those are vendor descriptions, not an independent comparison. Whichever you use, provide the relevant constraints and verify the result in the browser.
