Apple Watch icons show notifications, settings, connectivity, privacy-related sensor use, or active apps. The red dot means you have an unread notification; the water drop means Water Lock is on, so the screen ignores taps. To check what other status icons mean, press the side button to open Control Center and tap an icon for more detail when available.
Apple Watch status icons at a glance
Icons can appear at the top of the watch face, in Control Center, or as indicators for active apps. They do not all appear in the same place or on every model. This table covers the common indicators and the action Apple documents for each.

What the red dot and water drop mean
Red dot: unread notifications
The red dot is a notification indicator, not a warning about the watch. Swipe down from the watch face to open your notifications and read them.

The water drop means Water Lock is active. In this mode, the display does not respond to taps; the icon does not mean the watch detected water. To turn the mode off, press and hold the Digital Crown.

Tell the lock symbol apart from connection icons
A lock means Apple Watch itself is locked, so tap the screen and enter the passcode to use it. The paired-iPhone symbols report a different state: a connected-iPhone icon means the watch has a connection, while the red disconnected-iPhone icon means that connection has been lost. Apple lists distance between devices and Airplane Mode on the iPhone as possible causes of disconnection.
Understand privacy and network indicators
Location and microphone
A location arrow indicates that an app is using or recently used Location Services. Apple says tapping the blue arrow can show which app requested location. A microphone icon means the microphone is active; Siri and Voice Memos are examples, along with any app or feature that turns it on.

Wi-Fi and cellular
The blue Wi-Fi indicator means the watch is connected to a known Wi-Fi network. Cellular bars apply to GPS + Cellular models: they indicate a cellular connection, and more bars indicate stronger signal. A no-cellular indicator means a cellular-capable watch has lost its cellular-network connection.

Check Control Center for more context
- Press the side button to open Control Center.
- Look at the small icons along the top for status information.
- Tap an icon when you need more detail; additional information is available for some icons.
Control Center is useful when an indicator confirms that a feature or connection is active but does not identify the setting or app behind it.

Active modes and apps
Focus symbols, Theater Mode, and Airplane Mode report settings; workout, audio, and Backtrack symbols point to ongoing activity. The Walkie-Talkie indicator is version-sensitive: Apple’s support article notes that the app is no longer available with watchOS 27, so its status may not apply to a watch running that version.
