To check a Yu-Gi-Oh! deck for a North American TCG event, first confirm the event’s format and current list, then count each restricted card across your Main, Extra, and Side Decks combined. Forbidden cards are not allowed; Limited cards are capped at one copy and Semi-Limited cards at two. Release timing, card market, and Remote Duel rules can affect legality too.
What Forbidden, Limited, and Semi-Limited mean
Konami’s North American TCG deck-construction rules apply each restriction across the Main Deck, Extra Deck, and Side Deck together—not separately to each section. The official rules state that Forbidden cards cannot be used in any of those sections, a Limited card is capped at one copy combined, and a Semi-Limited card is capped at two copies combined. | Category | Maximum copies across Main, Extra, and Side Decks |
|---|---|
| Forbidden | 0 |
| Limited | 1 |
| Semi-Limited | 2 |
| Not listed in a restricted category | Generally 3, subject to event rules |
The general three-copy ceiling is also stated in Konami’s 2026 WCQ FAQ. A card’s category sets its maximum; moving a copy from the Main Deck to the Side Deck does not reset the count. 2026 WCQ FAQ

Which list applies to your event?
These instructions describe the North American Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG. They do not establish a universal list for the OCG, every region, or every event. Konami’s deck-construction page names Advanced and Traditional formats, and some events may specify a different list or format. A 2026 official FAQ, for example, distinguishes events using the current Advanced list from those using a World Championship format list; ask the store or organizer which rules the event uses if its announcement is unclear. 2026 WCQ FAQ

Latest North American TCG list at the stated date
As of October 7, 2026, the latest North American TCG list identified here is titled Forbidden & Limited Lists – September 21, 2026, and its stated effective date is September 21. However, its notes say that the changes moving Mind Master and Elder Entity Norden from Forbidden to Unlimited do not take effect until September 28, 2026. For any list update, read the card-specific effective-date notes rather than relying only on the date in the heading.
Konami’s tournament policy says list updates occur periodically during the year without a fixed schedule, and directs players to check the current list before sanctioned or official constructed events. A saved deck, older deck profile, or dated article may therefore be out of date. KDE-US Tournament Policy v2.3
Checklist: verify a deck before playing
- Identify the event’s format. Check whether it is Advanced, Traditional, or a named event-specific format, and look for an event-published list or additional restrictions. If unclear, ask the store, organizer, or head judge which list applies. 2026 WCQ FAQ
- Open the official current North American list. Check the list date, effective date, and any individual-card timing notes. Updates have no set schedule, so verify again close to the event. Official list page · Tournament Policy v2.3
- Count each card across all three deck sections. Record the total number in the Main, Extra, and Side Decks combined. Confirm zero for Forbidden, no more than one for Limited, no more than two for Semi-Limited, and generally no more than three for other cards, subject to the event’s rules. Deck-construction rules · 2026 WCQ FAQ
- Verify release timing in your territory. Tournament policy ties set legality to the official release date, which varies by region. Do not use another territory’s release date to decide whether a card is legal at your event. KDE-US Tournament Policy v2.3
- Check the card’s market and language. The North American WCQ FAQ says Asian-market cards, including Asian-English cards, are not legal in TCG tournaments. Foreign-language cards printed for the TCG market are allowed if you can provide an official translation when requested. 2026 WCQ FAQ
- If playing remotely, read the Remote Duel rules separately. Some cards are forbidden only in Remote Duel because certain private-knowledge effects cannot be resolved successfully in that setting. Those restrictions do not apply to in-person play and are not shown on the ordinary Advanced or Traditional list. North American Remote Duel OTS Qualifier FAQ
Why a deck checker alone may not settle legality
A third-party checker can help count copies, but the official list and the event’s rules determine what is permitted. A useful verification tool must reflect the current effective list and the right scope—TCG or OCG, the event’s format, and remote or in-person play—and account for copies across all deck sections. The available official guidance establishes those checks but does not establish the reliability of any particular third-party checker.

After changing a deck, repeat the count across Main, Extra, and Side Decks; then review territory-specific release timing and card-market rules. If the event publishes a special rule or the applicable format remains uncertain, ask the organizer or head judge rather than assuming the standard list covers it.
