Neither YouTube nor Patreon is a universal winner for ASMR creators. YouTube combines video publishing with ads and in-platform fan support for eligible channels; Patreon is a separate place to offer free or paid memberships, exclusive posts, and community features. They can complement each other, but the right choice depends on eligibility, fees, audience interest, and whether you can consistently deliver the benefits you promise.

What YouTube monetization offers—and what can limit it
Fan support inside YouTube
YouTube’s fan-funding menu includes recurring channel memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers for highlighted live-chat messages, and Super Thanks, which lets a viewer pay for an animation and highlighted comment. Access requires participation in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), compliance with applicable terms, and meeting feature-specific requirements. Age and supported geography can matter as well. Check YouTube’s fan-funding policy for current conditions that apply to your channel and country.

Content rules affect revenue
ASMR is not automatically safe for monetization or automatically disqualified. Individual videos may earn less or no ad revenue because of advertiser-friendly rules, age restrictions, copyright, or other monetization policies. Enforcement can also suspend access to monetization tools. Review YouTube’s advertiser-friendly content guidelines and the rules relevant to each upload rather than assuming a format will always receive the same treatment.
What Patreon adds
Patreon provides a destination for free and paid memberships, public-facing posts and discovery features, member-only posts, community spaces, and notifications. That is a different proposition from adding a YouTube “Join” option: it can give invested viewers a place to receive ongoing extras and interact with a creator, but it also asks them to use a separate service. Compare actual fees, not headline percentages
Patreon’s creator fee overview, marked updated September 11, 2026, says pages published after August 4, 2025 are on a standard 10% platform pricing plan. It says creators published on or before that date will not see an increase under the described change. The 10% is a platform fee, not a complete estimate of take-home proceeds. Payment processing, payout transaction charges, currency conversion, and applicable taxes can also affect the amount received. The guide specifies a 2.5% currency-conversion fee when a member pays in a currency different from the creator’s payout currency. Check the current fee guide and your account’s terms; the total depends on plan, payment method, country, currency, and payout method.

YouTube’s earnings vary by revenue stream and program terms, so the sources do not support a universal fee comparison between the platforms. Compare what you actually receive after applicable deductions for your own circumstances, not Patreon’s platform percentage against an assumed YouTube rate. YouTube’s August 10, 2026 announcement reported more than 3 million creators in YPP and described planned 2027 changes involving Premium Lite. It outlined allocations of 30% of net subscription revenue to a Premium creator pool and 60% to a Premium Lite pool, with a stated creator share of 55% for long-form and 45% for Shorts, distributed based on member watch time and views. These are platform-level descriptions of future-facing arrangements—not an individual earnings forecast or a percentage of a viewer’s subscription paid directly to one creator. Verify implementation before treating planned features as live.
How to choose between them
- Check YouTube eligibility first. Review YPP status, feature-specific requirements, supported geography, and the content rules relevant to your ASMR videos. Do not count on a fan-funding or ad feature until your channel qualifies.
- Identify what viewers would pay for. In-platform support may suit viewers who simply want to back your work. Patreon may make sense if you can offer a clear, ongoing membership benefit that some viewers value enough to use a second destination.
- Estimate net proceeds with your own terms. For Patreon, account for your actual plan, processing, payout, conversion, and tax costs. For YouTube, separate the revenue streams and terms that apply to your channel; no single all-purpose fee percentage makes the comparison.
- Set a sustainable workload. Choose perks you can maintain alongside public uploads. If operating two paid systems, make the differences between their benefits clear so viewers are not confused and you do not create duplicate obligations.
- Review actual results over time. Track paid sign-ups, cancellations, workload, and proceeds for your channel. Platform features and audience behavior do not predict your conversion or retention on their own.
Why ASMR creators may use both
A 2020 study in First Monday, “What do creators and viewers owe each other? Microcelebrity, reciprocity, and transactional tingles in the ASMR YouTube community,” describes audience attention on YouTube and direct patronage through Patreon as coexisting ways viewers relate to and support creators. It notes that viewers may back creators on Patreon when invested in them, when YouTube has demonetized videos, or both. This is qualitative context, not a representative survey or proof of higher earnings or retention. Read the study at First Monday.

Patreon can therefore be another support route, including when particular YouTube videos are demonetized, but it does not remove every platform risk or guarantee income. Running both services may diversify the ways viewers can support you while adding administrative work and making perk design more complex. Whether that trade-off is worthwhile is a channel-specific decision.
