Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore making a YouTube video public, check its details and audience setting, add any useful captions or video elements, review copyright and ad-suitability checks if they apply to you, then choose Public, Unlisted, Private, or a scheduled release. Uploading is not the same as publishing: you can upload first and decide later when and how people can watch.
1. Check the video details and audience setting
In YouTube Studio, review the video’s details before publishing. Confirm that the information accurately describes the video and that the audience designation is correct. Do not choose an audience setting simply because it seems likely to increase reach or engagement.

Decide carefully whether the video is made for kids
YouTube requires creators to designate whether a video is made for kids. Consider the video as a whole: its subject, intended audience, child performers, characters or toys, language, activities, songs, stories, and other evidence about whom it is intended for. No single factor automatically decides the question. A video being family-friendly, or attracting some child viewers, does not by itself establish that it is made for kids. YouTube says creators know their audience best and are responsible for making an accurate designation.

For made-for-kids videos, YouTube restricts or disables features including comments, notifications, cards, end screens, and personalized ads, along with other engagement or monetization features. These are consequences of the designation, not reasons to misclassify a video. YouTube’s guidance addresses platform settings and is not legal advice; creators remain responsible for applicable laws, including COPPA and other relevant rules.

2. Add captions and video elements where they help
Review the video elements before release. Add subtitles or captions when they are available and useful to your audience. Consider cards or an end screen if they make sense for the video and its audience. YouTube’s upload instructions say an end screen can be added only to a video that is at least 25 seconds long. If the video is made for kids, some of these features may be unavailable.
3. Review Checks without treating them as clearance
YouTube’s Checks page screens for copyright issues. If you are in the YouTube Partner Program and the relevant controls are available to you, review ad suitability and self-certification as well. These monetization controls are not universal settings for every creator.

A copyright result is not a guarantee that the video is cleared for use. YouTube says check results are not final; later manual claims, strikes, or changes to the video or its settings can affect it. Checks may continue in the background, and YouTube allows you to publish while they are running. If a segment is claimed, possible responses include removing the material or disputing the claim; which response is appropriate depends on your circumstances. A completed or clean check does not, by itself, establish that you have permission to use every element in the video.
4. Choose who can watch and when
Pick visibility according to who should be able to access the video. Uploading imports the file to YouTube; publishing makes the video available to viewers. You can upload privately or unlisted and make it public later.

| Visibility | Use it when | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Public | You want the video available for anyone to watch. | Publishing makes it publicly available. |
| Unlisted | You want to share access without making the video public. | Choose it when the intended audience should be limited to people you share it with; it is not the same as publishing publicly. |
| Private | You do not want the video generally accessible. | Keep it private while you review it or wait to release it. |
If the video is not ready for immediate release, schedule it for a later time instead of publishing now. Upload date and publish date can differ when you upload privately or unlisted first. YouTube says the publish date displayed beneath a public video is set using Pacific Standard Time, so do not assume that displayed date is necessarily the date shown in every viewer’s local time.
5. Final pre-publish checklist
- Details: Confirm the video information is accurate.
- Audience: Make an honest made-for-kids designation based on the video and its intended audience.
- Accessibility and navigation: Add useful captions or subtitles, cards, and an end screen where appropriate; an end screen requires a video of at least 25 seconds.
- Checks: Review copyright results and, if you are an eligible YouTube Partner Program creator, the available ad-suitability controls. Do not treat checks as final clearance.
- Release: Choose Public, Unlisted, or Private, or schedule publication for the intended time.
