If your YouTube stream loses audio after FFmpeg reconnects, first find out which connection recovered: an HTTP input or the RTMP/RTMPS output to YouTube. Reconnect options can restore an HTTP connection, but they do not select or remap audio. Check FFmpeg’s input streams and output mapping, then compare FFmpeg’s output with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages.
First identify which connection is reconnecting
FFmpeg’s reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_streamed, and reconnect_on_network_error options are HTTP protocol options. They can help recover an HTTP input connection; they do not choose an audio stream for the output. Check the options and behavior supported by the FFmpeg build you actually run against the FFmpeg HTTP protocol documentation.

- HTTP input reconnecting: verify the source connection returned and that its audio stream is still present. Then verify the output mapping.
- RTMP/RTMPS output reconnecting: HTTP input reconnect flags do not repair the output connection. Check the FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s ingest health for evidence about the outgoing stream.
The title alone cannot establish which path failed, what the source contains, or which FFmpeg version and command are in use. Treat the diagnosis as a set of checks rather than assuming reconnecting itself removed the audio.

Check that FFmpeg maps the intended audio stream
When one input contains both video and audio, an explicit mapping pattern is:

-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0Here, 0 refers to the first input, and v:0 and a:0 select its first video and first audio streams. This is an example, not a universal command: the correct input number and stream index depend on the source.
If audio comes from a separate input, map audio from that input instead. Confirm the actual source layout and input order before editing the command. Avoid making the audio map optional when the goal is to ensure audio is present: optional mapping can let FFmpeg continue without an audio stream rather than restoring one.

Use YouTube’s stream health to check the audio it receives
Open YouTube Live Control Room and review the stream-health messages around the reconnect. YouTube identifies missing or multiple audio streams, unsupported codecs, sample-rate problems, and too many audio channels as possible ingest issues. Its encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS audio; check the current YouTube encoder settings for applicable sample-rate and other numeric recommendations rather than relying on stale settings.

Trace where the audio disappears
Compare observations from the source, FFmpeg, any local recording, YouTube’s ingest report, and the outbound connection. This is a way to narrow down the failure, not proof of a particular root cause.
- Audio is absent from the source or FFmpeg’s view: investigate the source audio and input selection first.
- FFmpeg sees audio, but its output or local archive does not: examine the mapping and audio processing in the command.
- FFmpeg’s output or local archive retains audio, but YouTube reports a problem: compare the outgoing stream with YouTube’s health messages and check the output connection and outbound internet path.
YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking source routing, encoder errors and CPU load, a local archive, and the outbound internet connection. These observations help localize a problem, but none alone guarantees its cause.

Run a representative preflight test
- Use the same input sources, FFmpeg command, stream key, and output path intended for the live stream.
- Include real audio and movement similar to the planned stream. A test without the relevant audio conditions may not reproduce the problem.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages while the test runs, including after a reconnect.
- Keep the FFmpeg command and reconnect logs alongside the time of any audio loss and the corresponding YouTube health message.
- Compare FFmpeg’s output and any local archive with YouTube’s ingest report to determine where audio first goes missing.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the live event and monitoring stream health during the event in its encoder settings guidance.
