The main documented differences are that Playwright offers screenshot controls for pixel scale, animations, caret visibility, masks, capture-time stylesheets, and timeouts, while Puppeteer exposes options such as captureBeyondViewport and fromSurface. If you are choosing between them, compare the options you need against the framework version and browser your project actually uses; the APIs do not establish identical rendering or comparative speed.
At a glance: how the screenshot options differ
| Capture concern | Puppeteer | Playwright |

These are documented API differences, not proof that Puppeteer cannot achieve similar effects by other means, or that the two frameworks render the same page identically. The Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions page identifies version 25.12.0. The corresponding Playwright version was not established in the cited page material, so check the documentation and installed version you are targeting.

Choose by capture scope: viewport, full page, or clip
Viewport and full-page images
Without fullPage, each API captures the page’s visible area. Set fullPage: true when the output should include content beyond the current viewport. Both APIs document false as the default, so omitting the option does not request a full-page capture.

Clipped regions
Both APIs accept a rectangle for capturing a region rather than the whole viewport. In Playwright, the clip uses x, y, width, and height. Puppeteer also documents clipping, alongside captureBeyondViewport; its default changes depending on whether a clip is supplied. Do not assume edge behavior is identical across framework and browser combinations without testing the exact setup.

Choose output: format, quality, transparency, and returned data
Format and quality
Both APIs default to PNG. Puppeteer documents quality values from 0 to 100 for lossy output, with no quality setting applied to PNG; its format can be inferred from the output file extension. Playwright documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP, with quality values from 0 to 100 for lossy formats. Its documentation specifies JPEG quality 80 as the default and WebP quality 100 as lossless.
Use PNG when lossless output or transparency matters. For JPEG or WebP, select a quality appropriate to your file-size and fidelity needs; changing quality does not reduce PNG file size through a quality control.
Transparency
Both APIs provide omitBackground to remove the default white background so the capture can retain transparency. Playwright documents that this option is not applicable to JPEG. If alpha transparency is part of the output requirement, select a compatible format rather than JPEG.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReturned image data
Puppeteer’s Page.screenshot() returns a Uint8Array, or a string when using the base64 overload. Playwright’s page.screenshot() returns a Node.js Buffer. Both can be written to a file or processed in memory; account for the returned type when passing the result to another library.
Control screenshot dimensions with Playwright scale
Playwright documents a scale option with two values. css produces one output pixel per CSS pixel; device follows device pixels and can produce a larger image. The default is device. The cited Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions interface does not list an equivalent scale property. If screenshot dimensions matter for baselines, storage, or downstream image processing, set and verify the scale deliberately in Playwright and record the browser and viewport settings used.

Playwright controls
Playwright’s screenshot options document controls for handling animations, caret visibility, locator masks and mask color, a stylesheet applied during capture, and a timeout. These help standardize captures when pages contain blinking carets, moving elements, or data that should be visually obscured. The effect still depends on how the page and browser behave, so validate the resulting image for your application.
Puppeteer controls
Puppeteer’s documented screenshot options include optimizeForSpeed, fromSurface, and captureBeyondViewport, in addition to output and clipping controls. These options are documented in Puppeteer’s interface; they do not by themselves establish a speed advantage or a rendering difference relative to Playwright.
Element screenshots
Puppeteer’s screenshots guide documents ElementHandle.screenshot() and notes that it attempts to scroll a hidden element into view. Playwright documents element screenshots that capture element bounds, wait for actionability, and scroll the element into view; its current documentation discourages the ElementHandle method in favor of locator-based screenshots. See the relevant Puppeteer screenshots guide and Playwright ElementHandle API for the details applicable to your version.
Visual regression testing is a separate decision
If your goal is to export an image, the capture methods are the central comparison. If your goal is to detect visual changes, Playwright separately documents screenshot assertions with thresholds such as maximum different pixels or pixel ratio. Those assertions work only with the Playwright test runner, according to the PageAssertions documentation. The cited Puppeteer screenshot pages cover capture APIs rather than an equivalent assertion interface.
This distinction is about the documented APIs: it is not a claim that image comparison cannot be built around Puppeteer. Choose based on whether you need a built-in test-runner assertion workflow or only the screenshot bytes to compare using your own tooling.

How to take a screenshot in either framework
Puppeteer: full-page PNG saved to disk
This Node.js example assumes Puppeteer is installed in the project. It opens a page, requests a full-page capture, and writes the returned bytes to a file.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
const fs = require('node:fs/promises');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
const image = await page.screenshot({
path: 'page.png',
type: 'png',
fullPage: true
});
// `image` is screenshot data (Uint8Array) when captured this way.
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
For the option definitions and method behavior, consult Puppeteer Page.screenshot() and ScreenshotOptions.
Playwright: full-page PNG saved to disk
This example uses Playwright’s JavaScript API and saves the screenshot returned as a Buffer.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
const image = await page.screenshot({
path: 'page.png',
type: 'png',
fullPage: true
});
// `image` is a Buffer; it can also be processed in memory.
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
See the official Playwright Page API for the screenshot options available in the version you install.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
The cited API documentation does not provide a controlled speed or reliability comparison between Puppeteer and Playwright, so an option list is not a basis for declaring one faster or more reliable. Capture time and output size depend on the page, assets, browser runtime, viewport, and capture scope. Full-page captures can include substantially more pixels than viewport captures; choose the required scope and output format, then measure your own workload.

Or skip the browser setup
If you need an API rather than running a browser framework yourself, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot of a page:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Troubleshooting common screenshot problems
The image stops at the visible viewport
Cause: Full-page capture is off by default in both APIs. Fix: Set fullPage: true when you need the scrollable page.
The output dimensions differ from the expected baseline
Cause: Device scale, viewport, browser, or framework version may differ. Playwright defaults to device scale; its css setting produces one pixel per CSS pixel. Fix: Set the viewport and Playwright scale deliberately, and compare captures under the same runtime conditions.
Best Value
The file has a solid background instead of transparency
Cause: The background omission option was not enabled, or the chosen output format does not support the needed alpha behavior. Playwright documents omitBackground as inapplicable to JPEG. Fix: Set omitBackground: true and choose a format that supports transparency.
A capture is clipped or includes an unexpected area
Cause: The clip rectangle or viewport differs from the intended capture region; Puppeteer’s documented captureBeyondViewport default also depends on whether clipping is specified. Fix: Check the rectangle’s coordinates and dimensions, then verify the result in the specific browser and framework version you deploy.
A visual test changes from run to run
Cause: Animated content, a visible caret, changing page data, or different rendering conditions can alter pixels. Fix: Use Playwright’s documented animation, caret, mask, and stylesheet controls where appropriate, and keep browser, viewport, and page state consistent. These controls reduce specific sources of variation; they do not guarantee pixel identity across environments.
The API behaves differently from an example
Cause: Screenshot APIs evolve, and the installed framework version may not match the documentation being followed. Fix: Check the installed package version and its corresponding API reference before relying on a particular option.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does screenshot quality change a PNG in either framework?
No. The documented quality control applies to lossy formats; Puppeteer explicitly says it does not apply to PNG.
Can Playwright screenshot assertions be used without the Playwright test runner?
The cited PageAssertions documentation says screenshot assertions work only with the Playwright test runner.
