To send a vMix program to YouTube, copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, then paste them into vMix’s streaming settings—or use vMix’s integrated YouTube Live destination. YouTube must have live streaming enabled for your channel. For a truly always-on setup, also plan for network and PC interruptions: a stream key connects the encoder to YouTube, but does not itself keep vMix running or guarantee recovery.
Before you begin: enable YouTube live streaming
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do this before a planned broadcast. Check the channel’s eligibility in YouTube Studio; if the feature is not enabled yet, wait for YouTube to finish enabling it before troubleshooting vMix.

Get the YouTube stream URL and key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use.
- Open the Stream tab. Copy the server URL and stream key associated with that stream. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
- Keep the key private. Do not include it in screenshots, public guides, logs, or chat. If it is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in YouTube; replace the old value in vMix after resetting.
A key belongs to the YouTube stream configuration you selected. If you switch to a different scheduled stream, make sure vMix is using that stream’s URL and key.
Enter the key in vMix
In vMix, click the cog next to the Stream button to open Streaming Settings. vMix 29 documents two routes: the integrated YouTube destination and a custom RTMP destination. vMix 29 Streaming Settings

Option 1: Use the integrated YouTube Live destination
- In Streaming Settings, choose YouTube Live as the destination.
- Sign in or select the relevant YouTube channel when prompted, then configure the stream or scheduled event as the vMix interface allows.
- Review the selected destination and quality settings before going live.
vMix also documents a YouTube Live Stream Now destination, which can create a stream from inside vMix or select an existing scheduled event. Its guide says ending the vMix stream also ends the YouTube stream. This route can reduce manual copying, but choose it only if its stream-creation and event controls match how you want to manage the broadcast in Live Control Room. vMix: How to stream to YouTube Live
Option 2: Paste the URL and key with Custom RTMP
- In Streaming Settings, choose Custom RTMP Server.
- Paste YouTube’s server URL into the URL field.
- Paste the stream key into Stream Name or Key.
- Save or apply the settings, then confirm the destination and quality profile before starting.
The exact labels can vary with the vMix version and selected destination. Use the matching URL and key fields; do not put the key in a public-facing title or description.

Choose encoder settings YouTube can ingest
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS transport, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. RTMPS is the encrypted transport recommendation. The published guidance lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio, but that does not mean every codec or profile is available in every vMix installation or hardware configuration. Choose settings vMix can actually encode and YouTube can accept. YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

These examples are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations. Choose the row that matches the resolution and frame rate you intend to send; the minimum is not a target if the connection can sustain the recommended rate.

Start the stream and verify the feed
- Start streaming in vMix.
- In Live Control Room, check that YouTube receives the preview and reports stream health.
- Confirm the intended watch page is accessible and check both picture and sound.
- Keep monitoring the feed during the broadcast, especially after a change to the encoder, network, or source material.
YouTube recommends testing the setup, previewing and monitoring stream health, and checking audio and video quality. A stream can appear connected while still having a problem that viewers notice, such as missing audio or unstable video. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your live stream

What “always-on” means with vMix
With vMix, an always-on broadcast means the production system continues sending a live program to YouTube. Your PC, vMix process, source media, power, router, and internet connection all remain part of the chain. YouTube recommends keeping at least 20% upload bandwidth headroom, including the primary and backup bitrates where applicable. A wired Ethernet connection may be a useful choice if your PC supports it, but it does not by itself guarantee continuity. Plan separately for the YouTube archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on a complete automatic archive for a broadcast that runs longer than 12 hours. If retaining the full program matters, plan separate recordings or shorter sessions and verify your recording workflow. The cited help does not establish an official uninterrupted maximum broadcast duration. YouTube Help: Archive live streams
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. For prerecorded loops, consider a cloud workflow
A continuous vMix show and a loop of uploaded, prerecorded videos are different jobs. YouTube’s encoder list names Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded streams that does not need a dedicated PC or camera; that listing does not establish that it replaces a live vMix production or prove independent uptime. YouTube Help: Encoder options
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is looping uploaded videos rather than producing a live vMix program, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing needs to stay on at home; it loops from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It streams files you upload, not a live camera feed.
The first day is free with no card. The Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting common setup problems
- Live streaming is unavailable: Verify the channel and enable the feature in YouTube Studio. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours; also check that the channel has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- YouTube does not receive the vMix feed: Recheck that the server URL and key came from the intended stream, and that they are in the correct vMix fields. For a compromised or reset key, update vMix with the current one.
- The stream connects but video or audio is poor: Compare the vMix output with YouTube’s codec and bitrate guidance, check the chosen frame rate and keyframe interval, and test audio and video in Live Control Room.
- The stream health degrades or drops: Check available upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Inspect the network and PC for interruptions, then restore the feed if needed; the key alone does not provide failover.
- The archive is incomplete after a long broadcast: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Use shorter sessions or a separate recording plan when a complete copy is important.
