Yes. A 24/7 YouTube stream playlist can use MP4 files at different resolutions if the playlist software can decode them and produce a stable live feed. YouTube transcodes the feed it receives for viewers; that does not guarantee that every playlist player can handle mixed-resolution clips correctly. Check the software’s scaling and output behavior, then test transitions before relying on the stream.
Why different MP4 resolutions can work
There are two separate resolution questions:
- Source files: Your playlist might contain, for example, 1080p and 720p MP4s. Whether the software can play and transition between those files depends on that software, not on a universal YouTube playlist rule.
- Live feed: The encoder or playout service sends one live feed to YouTube. YouTube says it automatically detects encoder settings and transcodes the received stream into multiple output formats for viewers. That is downstream of your playlist software: YouTube cannot correct a file the player fails to decode or a broken transition.
YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations concern uploaded videos. They do not require all source MP4s in a live playlist to have the same resolution. See YouTube’s upload encoding settings and live encoder settings.

What to check in your playlist software
- Does it accept mixed-resolution inputs, including the exact MP4 codecs and frame rates in your files?
- Does it scale every clip to one fixed output resolution, or can output dimensions change between clips?
- What output resolution and frame rate does it send to YouTube, and can you set them manually or leave detection on automatic?
- What happens at clip boundaries and when a file is unreadable or ends unexpectedly?
- Does the workflow require a computer to remain on, and how does it recover from a dropped YouTube connection?
These behaviors vary by software and version. YouTube’s general encoder guidance does not establish how a particular playlist player handles mixed-resolution inputs. Check that product’s current documentation and settings.

Choose and verify the live output
Set a supported target
Choose a live-feed resolution and frame rate the playout software supports and your connection can sustain. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. If you use a custom stream key with a manually selected resolution, make sure the feed actually matches that setting.

For H.264 live ingest, YouTube’s current recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, and 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. Do not confuse upload bitrates with live ingest
YouTube separately recommends 8 Mbps for 1080p SDR uploads and 5 Mbps for 720p SDR uploads at standard frame rates. Those figures apply to uploading videos, not to whether a live playlist may mix resolutions. See YouTube’s upload encoding settings.

Test the actual playlist before going 24/7
- Check the player configuration. Confirm mixed-resolution support, scaling behavior, output resolution and frame rate, and any input format restrictions.
- Use the intended stream key and output settings. If the key has a manual resolution, align the feed with it; otherwise, YouTube’s default is automatic detection.
- Run through real transitions. Test clips at each resolution in the order they will play. Check for blank frames, distortion, unexpected output changes, audio interruptions, or playback failures.
- Monitor stream health. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring the stream. Observe the encoder or service as well as YouTube’s live status during the test.
- Test recovery cases. If the software supports recovery from a failed file or dropped connection, verify what it does before leaving the stream unattended.
A clean start does not prove every later transition or recovery case will work. Test the actual files and workflow you intend to run.

Troubleshooting mixed-resolution playlists
- Video goes blank or glitches at a clip change: The player may not decode that file or handle its dimensions, codec, or frame rate at the transition. Check the file against the software’s supported-input list and test with scaling enabled if available.
- The live output changes unexpectedly: Check whether the player changes its encoder output to match each source. If it does, look for a fixed-output or automatic-scaling option, and verify the selected stream-key resolution.
- YouTube reports a stream-health problem: Check the outgoing feed’s resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and connection against the live encoder guidance. YouTube’s transcodes are made from the feed it receives; they do not repair a faulty feed.
- One file will not play: Confirm that its container, video and audio codecs, and frame rate are supported by the playlist software. An MP4 extension alone does not establish compatibility.
