If your encoder says YouTube rejected the stream key with error 403, first copy the current key and stream URL from the correct stream in YouTube Studio and replace the saved encoder settings. Then check the connection method, RTMPS endpoint, and your channel’s live-stream eligibility. YouTube’s help pages do not define every 403 as one specific problem, so the exact encoder message and Live Control Room status matter.
What a 403 does—and does not—tell you
A 403 is the response your encoder or integration reports in this situation; it does not, by itself, establish that the key was compromised, your channel was banned, or YouTube is down. YouTube’s help material supports checking the credential, endpoint and protocol, account eligibility, and full error context, but does not identify one universal cause for this exact message.

A stream key is an ingestion credential for a particular live stream, not your general Google account password. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as private: do not paste it into public logs, screenshots, or support posts.
Refresh the key for the intended stream
- Open YouTube Studio → Create → Go Live → Stream, then confirm that you have selected the intended live stream or scheduled stream.
- Copy that stream’s current key from Live Control Room and replace the key saved in your encoder. YouTube’s first troubleshooting step for an encoder startup error is to get a new key and update the encoder.
- If you suspect the key is stale or exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. A channel owner or manager can reset it. Then update every encoder or saved profile that uses the old key; otherwise, those connections may stop working.
- Save the encoder profile and reconnect. Check for a leftover key in another profile, accidental whitespace, or a key copied from a different scheduled stream.

Match the encoder’s connection method and URL
If you connect with a manual stream key
Copy the Stream URL and stream key from the same Live Control Room stream. Put the URL in the encoder’s server or URL field and the key in its stream-key field. Confirm the encoder has not loaded an older saved profile or a key belonging to another stream.
If you connect by signing in to YouTube
Use the encoder’s YouTube sign-in or YouTube preset path if it supports one, and verify that it is connected to the intended channel and stream. Some encoder integrations authenticate through direct sign-in rather than a manually entered key, so a key-focused fix may not address a sign-in authorization failure. If the error persists in that mode, preserve the logs and contact the encoder’s support team.

Check RTMPS and transport errors separately
If the accompanying message mentions RTMPS, SSL, or a timeout, check the transport settings rather than assuming the key is the cause. YouTube advises using the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room, confirming the protocol and server, and checking that the encoder supports RTMPS. For an SSL error, YouTube says to try port 443 if the URL otherwise looks correct. For a timeout, verify RTMPS support in the encoder. These are connection checks; they do not prove that every 403 is an endpoint problem.

Verify that the channel can go live
YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. Check YouTube Studio for notices and restriction status. The 90-day period is an eligibility rule, not evidence that a restriction is the cause of every 403 response.
An active restriction cannot be worked around by starting the stream from another channel. Check YouTube’s guidance on live-streaming eligibility and avoiding restrictions on YouTube live streaming.

Use the full error details to narrow the failure
- Write down the full encoder error, its timestamp, encoder version, connection method (manual key or YouTube sign-in), selected stream, and configured URL and protocol. Do not share the stream key itself.
- Open the stream’s Live Control Room and check its health or error area. Compare its messages and timestamps with the encoder’s logs; YouTube notes that displayed errors can include a daily live-stream limit or an incorrect stream format.
- If the encoder reports a timeout or connection problem, check outbound connectivity as well as the RTMPS settings. For bandwidth planning, YouTube recommends leaving about 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. That is network preparation advice, not a remedy for a rejected key.
- If the current key and matching URL are confirmed, the channel is eligible, and the encoder still returns 403, save the detailed logs and contact the encoder vendor—especially when using its direct YouTube sign-in flow. You can also compare with another supported encoder or YouTube’s documented setup path; a different result helps isolate the connection path but does not prove the original cause.
