To connect an Azure VM to a scheduled YouTube stream, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, copy that event’s stream URL and key into encoder software on the VM, and start the encoder. When the preview appears in Live Control Room and looks and sounds right, select Go live. The VM sends the video to YouTube over an outbound internet connection; the Azure portal does not control the YouTube event.
Before you connect: check channel access and timing
- Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube’s current help page says streamers must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- Allow time to test. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event, starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand, and checking the preview before going live: YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Confirm the VM can reach the internet outbound and that its compute, input path, and network can sustain your chosen stream profile. A VM being able to run encoder software does not establish that it can sustain a particular bitrate.
Schedule the event and get its stream details
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- Open Manage → Schedule stream and create an event or reuse settings. Set the date and time, visibility, and event metadata. The event is managed in YouTube Studio, separately from the encoder running on Azure. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and live-stream settings.
- Open the scheduled event’s stream settings and copy its Stream URL and stream key. Use the RTMPS URL if your encoder supports it; reveal and copy the RTMPS URL shown in the event settings rather than assuming the default URL is secure. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts RTMP traffic with TLS/SSL. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
Treat the key as a secret. YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.

Configure the encoder on the Azure VM
- Install and open encoder software on the VM, then choose its YouTube or RTMPS preset if available. Otherwise, paste the event’s copied URL into the server or ingest URL field and the key into the stream-key field.
- Select the intended video and audio inputs and configure the output profile for the event. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total outgoing stream bitrate; include primary and backup feeds in that total if both are sending. This is YouTube’s recommendation, not a measured result for a particular Azure VM.
- Check that the encoder’s protocol and URL match. If using RTMPS, the encoder must support it and the URL must be the RTMPS URL copied from YouTube.
- Save the settings, but keep the event’s stream key private. Encoder labels and controls vary by software, so consult its current documentation for the specific fields and supported protocols.
Check Azure outbound networking
The media connection goes from the VM to YouTube’s ingest service. Sending a stream does not require opening an inbound port to the VM. If the encoder cannot connect, check the subnet, route table, network security groups (NSGs), and firewall rules for an allowed outbound path.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Azure’s default behavior is changing for new virtual networks: for API versions released after March 31, 2026, new VNets default to private subnets without automatic outbound access. Existing VNets are not changed by that default. Microsoft documents explicit outbound options including a NAT Gateway, load-balancer outbound rules, a Standard public IP associated with the VM, or routing through a firewall or network virtual appliance (NVA). Choose according to your network design; do not add inbound access just to send video. See Microsoft’s default outbound access documentation and guidance for managing subnet outbound access. Do not assume a VM has a stable outbound IP; document the egress method configured for your deployment.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Start the encoder, verify the preview, then go live
- Start the encoder early enough for YouTube to receive the feed before the scheduled event.
- In the event’s Live Control Room, wait for the preview. Check the picture, audio, and stream health rather than treating a successful encoder start as proof the event is ready.
- When the preview is correct, select Go live in Live Control Room. This deliberate step starts the event for viewers; sending a feed to the scheduled event and making the event live are separate actions.
- When finished, end the event in YouTube and stop the encoder as appropriate for your workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; see its encoder streaming guidance.
Troubleshoot connection and preview problems
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder cannot connect or times out | Outbound access from the VM, subnet routes, NSGs, and firewall rules; then confirm the copied server URL and protocol. | For a new private subnet, configure an explicit outbound method. The stream is outbound, so do not open an inbound VM port to fix this. |
| RTMPS connection times out or reports an SSL error | Whether the encoder supports RTMPS and whether you pasted the event’s RTMPS URL rather than another server URL. | Consult the encoder’s documentation. If it does not support RTMPS, use a protocol supported by both the encoder and the YouTube event. |
| Encoder is sending, but no usable preview appears | That the encoder uses the scheduled event’s matching URL and key, and that its video and audio inputs and output profile are set as intended. | Correct the encoder configuration and wait for the preview again before selecting Go live. |
| Stream health is poor or the feed is unstable | Available outbound capacity against the total bitrate, including any backup feed, plus the VM’s ability to run the selected encoder profile. | Rehearse from the actual Azure network and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. No particular VM size or bitrate is established as adequate for every setup. |
| Stream key may have been exposed | Whether someone else could use the key. | Reset it in Live Control Room and replace the key in the encoder. |
Copyright and the content you stream
Connecting successfully does not grant rights to the video or audio you send. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, including music and other people’s footage, and review YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements and applicable copyright rules before the event. Rehearse with the actual program feed so content and technical checks are not left until the scheduled start.
