Channel managers can manage YouTube live streams and reset stream keys; editors can manage live streams but cannot reset or delete stream keys. Viewers can monitor streams and see stream settings, but cannot view the key or manage live streams. These are channel-permission roles in YouTube Studio—not a substitute for the channel’s separate eligibility requirements for live streaming.
What each YouTube channel role can do with stream keys

YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat one as a credential: give people the channel role they need rather than sharing your Google Account sign-in details. YouTube’s stream settings help says only an owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers do not have that permission.

Choose the least-permissive role that fits the work
Use Editor for live-stream operation
An editor can manage live streams without being allowed to manage channel permissions or reset or delete stream keys. This is usually the more appropriate role when someone needs to handle stream operations but does not need authority over access or key recovery.

A manager can manage live streams and channel permissions, and can reset a stream key. That authority is broader than an editor’s; managers cannot delete the channel. Assign it only when the person’s responsibilities require those additional controls.

Use Viewer for monitoring
A viewer can monitor a stream and inspect settings apart from the stream key, but cannot manage live streams. Viewer (limited) has the same relevant stream permissions, with limited revenue-data access.
Invite, change, or remove a delegate in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Settings → Permissions.
- Invite the person using their email address, then choose the role that matches their work. Do not send them your Google Account password.
- To change or revoke access later, return to Settings → Permissions, find the person, and change their role or remove access.
YouTube says an invitation that is not accepted expires after 30 days. Channel permissions are the delegation system described here; Brand Account access has a migration path to channel permissions. Reset a key if it may have been exposed
If you suspect someone unauthorized has obtained the key, have a channel owner or manager reset it. YouTube’s documented path is YouTube Studio → Create → Go Live → Stream. Resetting invalidates the old key, so update the encoder or streaming service that uses it with the replacement key. Until it is updated, that encoder cannot authenticate using the old key.
Editors cannot perform this reset. If the assigned operator is an editor, ask an owner or manager to handle it rather than sharing account credentials or elevating access without a need.

Permissions are separate from live-stream eligibility
A role that permits live-stream management does not by itself make a channel eligible to stream. YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance lists channel verification and having no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days among eligibility requirements, and states a minimum streaming age of 16. Check that guidance for the channel’s current requirements; changing an editor into a manager does not resolve an eligibility restriction.
Common access problems and fixes
- An editor cannot reset the key: This is an intentional role limit. Ask an owner or manager to reset it, or have an owner assign a manager only if ongoing key-reset or permission duties justify the broader role.
- A viewer cannot find the stream controls: Viewers can monitor settings but cannot manage live streams. Ask a channel owner to grant an editor role if operational control is needed.
- The stream stops working after a reset: Replace the old key in the encoder or streaming service with the new key. Resetting changes the credential the encoder must use.
- An invitation no longer works: Unaccepted invitations expire after 30 days. Have an owner or manager send a new invitation from Settings → Permissions.
- A delegate cannot use a particular YouTube feature: Some features, including YouTube Music, YouTube Kids, and YouTube APIs, are not supported for delegates. Use the official channel-permissions guidance to confirm whether that feature is available through delegated access.
