A YouTube stream key is a sensitive credential an encoder uses, with YouTube’s server URL, to send a live feed to your channel. A channel owner or manager can reset the key; Editors can manage live streams but cannot reset or delete keys; Viewers can monitor streams and view settings except the key, but cannot manage streams. These are separate permissions, so access to Live Control Room does not automatically mean access to the key.
What the stream key permission controls
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key is used by an encoder to send a feed to YouTube, so treat it as a credential rather than ordinary stream information. YouTube’s role controls distinguish managing a live stream from seeing, resetting, or deleting its key. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings

What each channel role can do
The table separates three questions: can the person manage live streams, can they see the key, and can they change its lifecycle by resetting or deleting it? YouTube’s channel-permissions comparison describes the role limits below. The controls visible in Studio can change, so confirm the current labels in your channel. “Can manage live streams” does not mean “can access the stream key.” In particular, an Editor may operate streams but cannot reset or delete keys, while a Viewer may see settings but not the key. YouTube’s rule is explicit: “You must be a channel owner or manager to reset a stream key.”

How to find, reset, and use the key
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live, then open the Stream tab and locate Stream key. YouTube may update the interface labels. Manage live stream settings
- Reset it only when needed. If the key is compromised or needs rotation, an owner or manager can use Reset beside the hidden key. Copy the newly generated value.
- Replace the old value in the encoder. Put YouTube’s Live server URL in the encoder’s server field and the new key in its stream-key field. A reset does not update the encoder for you; until its settings use the new value, the encoder is still configured with the old one.
- Start the stream and verify its preview. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, then choose Go live when ready. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
If a collaborator cannot see or reset the key
- They can manage the stream but cannot reset the key: check whether they have the Editor or Editor (Limited) role. Stream-management access does not include key-reset authority. An owner or manager must perform the reset.
- They can monitor a stream but cannot manage it: Viewer and Viewer (Limited) roles allow monitoring and access to stream settings except the key; they do not allow live-stream management.
- They need to operate streams: review their channel permission role in YouTube Studio and assign a role appropriate to the task. Do not grant broader authority than they need simply to solve a key-reset request; the reset itself is reserved for an owner or manager.
- The key was reset, but the encoder no longer connects: replace the saved key in the encoder with the newly generated key, and check that the server URL and key are in their respective fields.
