Profiles store Stream settings. Then open Settings > Stream and check the selected service and key. If the key itself was reset in YouTube Studio, replace the old value in OBS with the current one.
1. Check which OBS Profile is active
OBS saves Stream settings, including a connected account, within a Profile. If a different Profile is selected after restarting, its settings may not match the ones you expect. OBS describes Profiles as saving most OBS settings, especially those related to outputs. See the OBS Project’s Profiles guide.

- In OBS, check the Profile currently selected from the Profile menu.
- Select the Profile you configured for YouTube, if a different one is active.
- Open Settings > Stream and confirm the stream configuration there.
Profiles also store Output settings, but not scenes. OBS uses Scene Collections for scenes, so a missing scene layout is a different issue from a missing stream key. See the OBS Project’s Profiles guide.
2. Inspect the Stream settings in OBS
In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Check that the service is set to YouTube, or to the intended custom server if you use one, and inspect the stream key field. OBS’s OBS Studio Overview Guide identifies Stream settings as the place to select a service or server and enter a key.

- Service or server is wrong: choose the intended service or configure the intended custom server.
- Key field is empty: check that the correct Profile is selected, then enter the current key from YouTube Studio.
- Key is present but the stream will not connect: verify that it is still the current YouTube key; a key reset makes the previous value outdated.
3. Confirm the key in YouTube Studio
YouTube creates and manages stream keys, which its Help Center describes as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Find the key intended for your encoder in YouTube’s Live Control Room, then make sure that is the value configured in OBS. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
If someone reset the key in YouTube Studio, update OBS with the new one. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key. A changed or invalid key is a credential issue; it does not by itself explain why OBS loses a locally configured value after restart. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

4. Back up a working OBS Profile
Once the correct Profile has the intended Stream settings, export it as a JSON file so you have a settings backup. OBS supports exporting Profiles and importing them for backup or use on another installation. Use the Profile menu’s export and import options; the OBS Project’s Profiles guide explains the feature.
A Profile export is a settings backup, not a guarantee about how stream keys are stored on every operating system or OBS version. Keep the export somewhere you can retrieve if the Profile needs to be restored.

5. Don’t confuse YouTube’s “Reuse settings” with OBS saving
When creating a new YouTube stream, YouTube’s Reuse settings feature can copy an earlier stream’s metadata, settings, and key. That affects stream creation in YouTube; it does not establish that OBS has saved its local configuration. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
Similarly, YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings let an encoder start or stop a stream; they do not document OBS credential persistence. YouTube says those options are copied when settings are reused. They are separate from the question of whether the key remains in OBS after a restart. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

6. Narrow down where the problem is

7. Troubleshooting when the key still disappears
- Recheck the Profile after restarting. If it changed, select the configured one and check Stream settings again.
- Verify the key independently in YouTube Studio. If it was reset, update OBS with the current key; resetting it will not resolve a missing local setting unless the problem was an outdated credential.
- Export the configured Profile. This gives you a backup of Profile settings, but does not diagnose or guarantee OS-level credential storage.
- If the same Profile still loses the setting, avoid guessing at a fix. The official sources cited here do not explain causes such as file permissions, profile-directory corruption, portable installations, or version-specific defects. Those require a diagnosis specific to your OBS version and operating system.
