Set OBS’s streaming encoder Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds. In OBS, open Settings → Output; if the streaming encoder controls are not visible, change Output Mode to Advanced. Set the interval on the streaming output—not just the recording encoder—apply the change, then run a short test and check stream health in YouTube Studio.
Set the keyframe interval in OBS
- In OBS, open Settings → Output.
- If the streaming encoder controls are hidden, change Output Mode to Advanced.
- Find Keyframe Interval under the streaming output or streaming encoder settings and enter 2 seconds. OBS labels and control placement can vary by version and encoder.
- Apply the setting. Make sure you changed the streaming encoder, not a recording-only encoder setting.
- Start a brief test stream with movement and audio similar to the planned broadcast. Check the health indicator and message in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
What YouTube’s keyframe guidance means
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends a keyframe every 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its live-streaming error guidance likewise says to send keyframes every two seconds; at 30 frames per second, that corresponds to 60 frames. These are technical settings, not separate targets: use the two-second interval rather than trying to tune by frame count alone.

YouTube supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS live encoder settings, with frame rates up to 60 fps and CBR bitrate encoding. The keyframe interval warning concerns the stream YouTube receives, not merely the value displayed in OBS. YouTube notes that ingestion errors can result in an incorrect GOP size and that its pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. An interval longer than four seconds may cause buffering; a warning that a GOP is too small is a different condition and does not automatically call for a longer interval.

If YouTube still reports a keyframe problem
- Verify which encoder you changed. Reopen OBS’s streaming output controls and confirm the value is 2 seconds there. A recording encoder’s setting does not necessarily change the outgoing stream.
- Use the exact warning to guide the next check. Do not increase the interval beyond four seconds to clear a warning. If YouTube reports a GOP that is too small, do not assume a longer interval is the correct fix.
- Check the received stream. If OBS shows 2 seconds but YouTube reports the wrong frequency, inspect the stream-health details and the active encoder path; YouTube says ingestion errors can produce an incorrect GOP size.
- Retest with a representative broadcast. Include typical motion and audio, then monitor YouTube’s health indicator during the test. A brief test can reveal whether the warning persists before the planned event.
