Broken Devanagari in a Playwright screenshot usually points to the browser’s font and rendering environment—not the screenshot file format. Check the text and CSS, confirm that the intended web font loaded or that a Devanagari-capable system font is installed in the browser’s runtime, and capture only after the page is ready. For repeatable visual tests, pin the operating system, browser build, and fonts as well as the Playwright version.
Why Devanagari can break in a Playwright screenshot
A screenshot records the pixels rendered by the browser in its current environment. If the browser cannot use the face requested by the page—because the font lacks the glyphs, the font file is missing, or a web-font request failed—it may use a fallback font. A different fallback can produce missing-glyph boxes or text that looks unlike the intended design. Separated or misordered marks can also indicate a font or shaping mismatch, but the appearance alone does not prove the cause.

Playwright cautions that browser rendering can vary with host OS, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, and headed or headless mode. Its Visual comparisons documentation recommends using the same environment for consistent screenshots. A local capture and a Linux CI capture are not a controlled comparison if their fonts or browser builds differ.
Diagnose the rendering stack in order
- Record the failing case. Save the screenshot and exact text string. Note whether the symptom is empty boxes, missing marks, or unexpected letter shapes. Treat these as clues, not a diagnosis.
- Record the runtime. Note the OS and container image, Playwright version, browser engine and exact browser build or channel, and whether the test is headed or headless. Playwright supports Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit; do not assume they render identically. See Playwright browser documentation.
- Check the requested and effective fonts. In browser developer tools, inspect the affected element’s computed
font-family, its CSS rules and@font-facedeclarations, and which face actually rendered the text. Check the browser’s network log for failed font requests. A requested family in CSS does not establish that the browser loaded or used it. - Check font files inside the capture environment. A font installed on a developer laptop is not automatically present in a CI container. Verify the font package and files in the exact image used by the Playwright job.
- Wait for the page’s real readiness conditions. Confirm that the application has rendered the target content, font requests have succeeded, and any app-specific loading state has completed before capture. Inspect failed requests as well as the screenshot. Do not assume a fixed delay proves that a web font loaded.
- Change one comparison variable at a time. Hold the page and text constant while comparing the intended web font with an installed system font, or compare browser engines while keeping the OS and fonts fixed. This helps narrow the issue without treating any single comparison as proof.
Install Devanagari fonts in Ubuntu CI
For Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, the archive lists fonts-noto-core; its file list includes regular and bold Noto Sans Devanagari and Noto Serif Devanagari. Install it in the image that runs the browser, then verify the package and font files there. See the Ubuntu 24.04 package page and its file list. Package names and availability can differ on other distributions and base images.

RUN apt-get update && apt-get install -y --no-install-recommends fonts-noto-core
&& rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
Rebuild the CI image after changing its package list. A successful package installation only makes those fonts available to the runtime; it does not ensure a page’s CSS selects them. If the site expects a particular web font, check its delivery and the computed font on the target element too.
Check Chromium’s Devanagari defaults by version
Do not rely on an assumed Chromium default. A Chromium source change dated 2026-03-04 added explicit Linux mappings for standard and sans-serif to Noto Sans Devanagari and serif to Noto Serif Devanagari. The change description says that before the change Chromium had no configured Devanagari defaults and relied on generic system font resolution. That source change does not mean every Playwright Chromium build already contains the mapping, or that the named fonts exist in your container. Check the exact browser build and runtime fonts. Make screenshot capture wait for font readiness
Use the readiness checks that match the page: wait for the application’s content to appear, check font-resource failures, and wait for the browser’s font-loading state before taking the screenshot. For example, in Playwright’s JavaScript API:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.locator('[data-testid="target-content"]').waitFor();
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
Replace the example URL and locator with your page and a selector that indicates the relevant content is rendered. document.fonts.ready addresses the document’s font-loading set; it cannot repair a failed font request, guarantee that CSS chose the intended face, or establish that application data is complete. If the app has a stronger ready signal, wait for it explicitly. Playwright’s Page API documents navigation and screenshot methods.

Stabilize visual baselines across runs
Run baseline generation and comparison in a pinned environment: use the same OS or container image, Playwright version, browser build, font packages, and capture mode. Playwright’s screenshot comparison process captures until two consecutive screenshots match; this can reduce timing instability within a run, but it cannot make different operating systems or font stacks equivalent. Snapshot names can include browser and platform so differences remain attributable. See Playwright’s visual comparison guidance.
When a failure persists, include the screenshot artifact, exact text, computed font-family, font-request results, OS or image version, Playwright version, browser engine and build, and headed or headless mode in the bug report. Without those details, the screenshot alone does not identify a root cause.

Common failures and fixes
- Boxes appear only in Linux CI: check whether the runtime image has a Devanagari-capable font. Add an appropriate package to that image, then confirm the browser uses the intended face.
- The CSS names a web font, but the screenshot uses another face: inspect the computed font and network failures. Fix the font URL, access policy, or other delivery issue, then wait for the relevant font and app readiness conditions.
- Local and CI captures differ: compare OS image, browser build, font files, and headed/headless mode. Make the environments match before changing snapshot expectations.
- The screenshot sometimes catches fallback text: avoid relying on an arbitrary sleep alone. Wait for the target content and font readiness, and investigate intermittent font requests or application rendering.
- Only one browser engine differs: compare its exact build and font behavior against the other engines while keeping the OS, font files, and page fixed. Playwright’s support for multiple engines does not imply identical rendering.
- The page is blank or incomplete rather than showing bad glyphs: diagnose navigation, application errors, and resource failures separately; a font change will not fix a page that did not render.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does adding Noto fonts guarantee every Devanagari page will render correctly?
No. The page may require a web font, CSS may select another family, or the font resource may fail to load. Verify the effective font and page-specific font requests.
Will matching two consecutive Playwright screenshots make Linux and macOS baselines identical?
No. Matching consecutive captures addresses stability within a run. Cross-platform rendering can still differ because the operating system, browser, and fonts differ.
