Start with the exact issue shown in YouTube Live Control Room; do not change several FFmpeg options at once. Match the warning to the setting you changed, restore a supported configuration for your ingest protocol and encoder, then test with representative audio and motion before relying on the stream. Without the warning text, command, and FFmpeg build, no single repair command is safe to prescribe.
Why did YouTube warn after I changed FFmpeg settings?
A stream-health warning identifies a possible problem, not necessarily the codec itself. YouTube’s documented issue categories include video and audio encoding, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, keyframe/GOP behavior, ingestion starvation, and mismatches between primary and backup feeds. Read the exact message in Live Control Room first and use it to narrow the change. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API configuration issue reference describes the issue types and corrective guidance.

If the warning appeared immediately after a codec change, compare the old and current command, but do not assume timing proves the codec is the cause. A changed encoder can also alter bitrate behavior, GOP structure, frame rate, or compatibility with the selected ingest protocol.
Recover in a controlled sequence
- Capture the warning and current setup. Copy the full Live Control Room message. Record the FFmpeg version/build, input, ingest protocol, selected video and audio encoders, resolution, frame rate, bitrate options, GOP options, and the command used. Keep a copy of the last working command if available.
- Check the protocol-specific guidance. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s published guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended keyframe frequency of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Confirm that the codec and encoder are supported by your actual FFmpeg build and ingest mode. See YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Change only the implicated setting. If the warning identifies an unsupported codec, choose a codec supported for the ingest mode. If it identifies an excessive keyframe interval or open GOP, adjust GOP settings. If it identifies bitrate, check the codec/resolution/frame-rate recommendation and your sustained upload capacity. Avoid changing unrelated parameters until you know whether the warning clears.
- Check option meaning for your encoder. FFmpeg’s
-gsets GOP size in frames. Convert a target interval to frames by multiplying frame rate by seconds: at 30 fps, a two-second interval corresponds to 60 frames. Encoder-specific options vary, so check the selected encoder’s available options rather than assuming a flag works the same across backends. FFmpeg documents-cgopas disabling closed GOP and enabling open GOP; remove it when configuring a closed GOP. See FFmpeg documentation. - Run a representative test. Send a test stream with audio and movement similar to the intended content, then monitor the health messages. YouTube specifically recommends testing before starting a live stream with representative audio and video movement. If the warning says ingestion is starved, compare the configured bitrate with sustained outbound capacity; if recording locally, confirm the archive file continues growing.
What bitrate should I use?
There is no universal bitrate that fixes every warning. YouTube’s current guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its H.264 examples include:

| H.264 output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s listed settings for the named H.264 formats, not universal targets for other codecs or output modes. A configured bitrate also has to fit the connection’s sustained upload capacity; a connection that cannot consistently carry it can produce starvation even when the codec and video parameters are otherwise acceptable. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the format you are sending.
How to diagnose GOP and keyframe warnings
YouTube recommends a keyframe every two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. FFmpeg’s -g value is a frame count, so the equivalent count depends on frame rate: for example, two seconds at 30 fps is 60 frames. This conversion does not guarantee that every encoder’s private GOP options behave identically.

For an open-GOP warning, YouTube’s issue guidance says to change the encoder configuration to closed GOP. FFmpeg’s -cgop flag enables open GOP, so it conflicts with that goal; remove it and verify the encoder’s documented behavior. Do not treat setting -g alone as proof that the GOP is closed.

- Codec: video/audio codec against YouTube’s guidance for the ingest protocol and the encoder actually available in the FFmpeg build.
- Keyframes or GOP: interval in seconds and frames, plus whether the GOP is open or closed.
- Bitrate or starvation: configured video and audio rates against the relevant format recommendation and sustained upload capacity.
- Resolution or frame rate: actual encoded output against the stream configuration and supported limits.
- Primary/backup mismatch: compare codec, profile, resolution, frame rate, keyframe frequency, and audio/video bitrate across feeds.
Common recovery failures
- The warning remains after changing the codec: another changed property may be implicated. Re-read the issue text and check bitrate, GOP, resolution, frame rate, and audio separately.
- The command rejects an option: the option may not exist for that encoder or build. Check local FFmpeg encoder help and the selected encoder’s documentation; FFmpeg notes that private options are encoder-specific.
- YouTube reports open GOP: remove
-cgopif present, then verify the encoder is producing closed GOP rather than assuming the generic option settled it. - The stream is intermittently unhealthy or starved: test sustained upload capacity against the configured total stream bitrate and inspect whether local recording continues to grow.
- A backup feed triggers a mismatch: align its encoding characteristics with the primary feed, including codec/profile, dimensions, frame rate, keyframes, and audio/video rates.
