Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAfter changing your encoder’s resolution, first confirm the resolution and frame rate it is actually sending. Then check whether YouTube is set to detect them automatically or whether a custom stream key has a conflicting manual resolution. Next, verify the bitrate for the new resolution, frame rate, and codec, followed by encoder health and upload bandwidth. The warning’s exact wording matters: without it and relevant telemetry, no single cause can be identified responsibly.
1. Confirm the signal your encoder is sending
In OBS or your other encoder, check the output resolution and frame rate—not just the canvas or preview resolution. A changed canvas does not necessarily mean the encoded stream output changed. Confirm the settings that apply to the active streaming output, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages.

YouTube says Live Control Room detects incoming resolution and frame rate automatically by default. If you use a custom stream key with a manually selected resolution, verify that the selection matches the encoder’s actual output. A mismatch between those two settings is a direct configuration issue to investigate before changing unrelated options. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and custom stream key settings describe these options.
2. Recheck bitrate for the new output
Do not assume the bitrate that suited your old resolution is still appropriate. YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. The following examples are from its current guidance as accessed on October 3, 2026; YouTube does not state a publication year on the cited help page. They are recommendations, not guarantees that your encoder or connection can sustain them.

| H.264 | 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p60 | 12 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
These are live-streaming figures, not upload-video encoding targets. Check the row that matches your stream rather than treating any one number as universal. The complete table and other live settings are on YouTube’s encoder settings page.
3. Check the general encoder settings
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Check these against the active encoder profile rather than a saved profile that is not being used. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance is the reference for its current requirements and recommendations.

4. Work out whether the encoder or connection is at fault
If the encoder preview or local recording looks wrong
Investigate the encoder and source before blaming the network. Check encoder error indicators, CPU load, and the quality of the source being captured. If the local output is already poor or unstable, an upload-speed change will not correct the underlying encoding or source problem.
If the encoder output looks healthy but YouTube reports trouble
Check outbound upload strength and connection stability. YouTube says the total streaming bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. That is a general recommendation, not a guaranteed minimum for every network. If a connection test indicates a problem, contact your ISP. A stable wired connection may help when testing points to network instability, but it cannot fix a resolution mismatch or overloaded encoder. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance and its streaming tips.

5. Reproduce the issue in a preflight test
Before making the stream public, test with movement and audio representative of the real event. Inspect the Live Control Room preview and watch the stream-health messages while the test runs. YouTube specifically advises testing with similar audio and video movement before going live. A repeatable test helps distinguish a persistent settings mismatch from a transient connection issue. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers testing and monitoring.
What the warning does—and does not—tell you
“Stream health” is not enough detail to diagnose a particular incident. Use the literal on-screen message as the first clue, then compare it with the encoder’s output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, stream-key mode, and connection condition. If the message identifies a different issue, follow that specific branch rather than assuming every warning after a resolution change is caused by resolution.
