Use a browser automation tool to submit the login form, verify that authentication succeeded, and then capture the protected page. With Playwright, the reliable default is to fill and submit the visible form, wait for an authenticated URL or page element, and only then take the screenshot. A direct form-encoded POST can be simpler, but only when the site supports that authentication route and you know what fields and checks it requires.
Choose a browser login or a direct POST
A login form that submits with POST does not by itself tell you how to authenticate programmatically. The application may require hidden fields, a CSRF token, JavaScript, multifactor authentication, or additional server checks. Use the browser UI when those requirements are unclear; use a direct API request only when the application documents or otherwise explicitly supports that route.

| Approach | Best when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Submit the visible form in Playwright | You need to follow the site’s normal sign-in flow, or the endpoint’s requirements are unclear. | It follows the browser interaction, but you must identify reliable form fields and a success signal. |
| POST form data with Playwright’s API request context | The site provides a supported login endpoint and you know the required fields. | It avoids UI interaction, but a guessed request may omit browser-dependent or security-related steps. |
Both methods can establish cookies in a Playwright browser context. Confirm that the protected content is actually visible before capturing: a completed request or an image file is not proof that login worked.

Set credentials in environment variables rather than writing them into a script or committing them to source control. For example, in a shell:
export SITE_USERNAME='your-username'
export SITE_PASSWORD='your-password'
Use a test account where possible, and ensure you have permission to automate access to the site. The selectors and success condition in the examples are illustrative: replace them with the actual labels, URLs, and authenticated-only UI of the site you are capturing.

Default workflow: submit the login form in a browser
This example uses the form’s accessible labels, waits for the post-login URL, opens the protected page, checks for an authenticated-only element, and saves a full-page screenshot.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const context = await browser.newContext();
const page = await context.newPage();
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com/login', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.getByLabel('Username').fill(process.env.SITE_USERNAME);
await page.getByLabel('Password').fill(process.env.SITE_PASSWORD);
await Promise.all([
page.waitForURL('**/dashboard', { timeout: 30000 }),
page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Sign in' }).click(),
]);
await page.goto('https://example.com/account/reports', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
});
// Replace this with a stable element visible only to authenticated users.
await page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Reports' }).waitFor({ timeout: 30000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'authenticated-page.png', fullPage: true });
// Save only if a later run needs to reuse this signed-in session.
await context.storageState({ path: '.auth/state.json' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Playwright’s authentication guide shows this pattern: fill the login form, submit it, wait for a final URL or authenticated UI, and optionally save storage state. Waiting matters because authentication can involve several redirects and cookies may be set along the way. The example waits for a URL; if a site remains on the same URL after login, wait for an authenticated-only element instead.

Reuse a saved session carefully
When later captures need the same session, initialize a new browser context from the saved state:
const context = await browser.newContext({ storageState: '.auth/state.json' });
const page = await context.newPage();
Storage state can contain sensitive cookies and headers that allow someone else to act as the account. Keep it out of version control (for example, exclude the .auth directory in your ignore rules), restrict access, and delete it when it is no longer needed.

Alternative: POST form data when the site supports it
Playwright’s APIRequestContext can send a form-encoded POST, follow redirects, and share cookie state with requests in that context. This route is appropriate only when the site’s login endpoint and required parameters are understood. The endpoint, field names, and success URL below are examples, not universal login details.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →const { chromium, request } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const api = await request.newContext();
try {
const response = await api.post('https://example.com/session', {
form: {
username: process.env.SITE_USERNAME,
password: process.env.SITE_PASSWORD,
},
});
if (!response.ok()) {
throw new Error(`Login request failed: HTTP ${response.status()}`);
}
const state = await api.storageState();
const context = await browser.newContext({ storageState: state });
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com/account/reports', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
});
await page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Reports' }).waitFor({ timeout: 30000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'authenticated-page.png', fullPage: true });
await context.close();
} finally {
await api.dispose();
await browser.close();
}
})();
Playwright encodes the form values as application/x-www-form-urlencoded. Its API request context handles cookies and follows redirects. A successful HTTP response still does not establish that the credentials were accepted; check the resulting page for an authenticated signal. If the site requires a CSRF token, challenge, multifactor step, or browser-side preparation, use the visible form flow or the site’s documented authentication process instead.

Capture only after verifying the rendered page
The screenshot API saves the rendered browser page to a file. In the examples, fullPage: true captures the full page rather than only the visible viewport. Playwright also supports screenshot settings such as image format, scale, and masking elements. Choose the capture options based on what the screenshot is for, and avoid capturing account details or other sensitive information unnecessarily.
- Wait for a URL or element that demonstrates login completed before navigating onward.
- On the target page, wait for a stable authenticated-only element before saving the image.
- If the page loads important content asynchronously, wait for the relevant element rather than assuming navigation completion means the content is ready.
- Keep the page, URL, and screenshot access within the permissions and privacy rules that apply to the account.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Login button click times out | The accessible name differs, the form has not loaded, or the page uses another control. | Inspect the actual page and use its real accessible label or role. Wait for the login form to appear before filling it. |
| Wait for the dashboard URL times out | Login failed, the application redirects elsewhere, or success does not change the URL. | Check the resulting page for validation errors and identify the actual final URL or an authenticated-only element to wait for. |
| The POST returns an error or redirects back to login | The endpoint, fields, credentials, or required security values may be wrong or incomplete. | Use the site’s supported login route and required fields. Do not assume a browser form can be reproduced by posting only a username and password. |
| The POST appears successful but the target shows a login screen | The session may not have been established or its cookies may not be available to the browser context. | Verify the authenticated state before capturing, and use Playwright’s API context storage state with the browser context as shown. If the flow depends on browser interaction, switch to UI login. |
| Screenshot is blank, incomplete, or shows a loading state | The target was captured before its authenticated content rendered. | Wait for a stable, authenticated-only element on the target page before calling screenshot. |
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. It captures public pages from a URL; it does not take your Playwright login form credentials or use your saved browser session, so it is not a replacement for the authenticated browser workflow above. For pages it can access, one GET request returns an image or PDF:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan to try it on a URL the service can access.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a screenshot file prove that login succeeded?
No. Confirm that the protected page displays an authenticated-only element before saving the screenshot.
Can ScreenshotNeo capture a page that is available only after my browser logs in?
The URL-based ScreenshotNeo request described here does not reuse your Playwright browser session or submit its login form. Use the browser workflow for a page that requires that authenticated session.
