YouTube Stream Drops Frames on Ethernet: Test Packet Loss and Upload Limits

Ethernet does not guarantee a stable YouTube stream. Learn how to distinguish network-dropped frames from encoder problems, test upload headroom, and troubleshoot the local link and route to YouTube.

An Ethernet connection rules out Wi-Fi radio interference on the computer’s local link, but it does not guarantee a stable YouTube stream. Dropped frames can point to an unstable route to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain; they do not, by themselves, report a measured packet-loss percentage. Check whether the problem is network-related, compare upload capacity with your stream’s total bitrate, and test the stream route under realistic conditions.

First identify what is dropping

OBS distinguishes network-dropped frames from problems that originate in the encoder or video sources. Its network indicator is evidence of trouble sustaining the connection to the selected remote server or the configured bitrate—not a packet-loss meter. YouTube also recommends checking encoder errors, CPU load, source quality, dashboard stream-health messages, and a local recording when the picture or sound is poor. OBS Project’s troubleshooting guide and YouTube’s streaming troubleshooting guidance describe these separate checks.

  • Likely network or bitrate issue: OBS reports network-dropped frames or intermittent disconnections, especially when the local feed and recording look normal.
  • Likely encoder or source issue: The preview or local recording is already choppy, audio is faulty before transmission, encoder errors appear, or CPU load is high.
  • Not enough evidence to call it packet loss: A dropped-frame counter or a single generic speed-test result does not establish a packet-loss percentage or prove where a fault lies.

Test upload capacity against the stream bitrate

Compare the connection’s outbound upload capacity with the total bitrate being sent to YouTube—not with the download number. YouTube notes that upload capacity is often lower than download capacity and says the stream’s total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. It recommends keeping 20% upload capacity in reserve. Other people, cloud backups, and devices using the same connection can consume that headroom. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

  1. During the time the problem occurs, run an upload test and note the result. A short peak is less useful than a connection that remains adequate throughout a representative stream.
  2. Record the stream’s configured video and audio bitrates and compare their total with the available upload. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% spare capacity rather than planning to use the full measured upload.
  3. Note whether other users or devices are uploading during the test. Repeat under comparable conditions after changing one setting at a time.

A speed test is only one piece of evidence: it may not follow the same route as the connection to YouTube’s selected ingest server. Monitor OBS and YouTube stream health during an actual test stream before concluding that the route is stable.

Choose a bitrate for your codec and output

There is no single correct bitrate for every stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance provides different targets by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The H.264 recommendations below are from YouTube Help, checked on October 3, 2026; the page does not state a publication date.

Codec Resolution and frame rate YouTube-recommended bitrate
H.264 1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
H.264 1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
H.264 720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
H.264 720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommendations, not guarantees that a particular ISP connection will sustain a stream. YouTube also lists AV1 and H.265 rates; use the table for the codec actually selected rather than applying H.264 figures to another codec. The current encoder settings and protocol guidance are on YouTube’s live encoder settings page.

  • The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
  • For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) encoding.
  • YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • If capacity is too close to the stream’s total bitrate, lower the bitrate and, if needed, reduce resolution or frame rate to a target suited to the available connection. Retest after each change.

Run a controlled test stream

  1. Recreate the real workload. Before the public event, stream with movement and audio similar to the intended show. YouTube recommends testing ahead of time and monitoring stream health. Record the time, codec, resolution, frame rate, configured bitrate, and whether other devices are uploading; these notes make repeat runs comparable.
  2. Watch both ends. During the test, observe OBS’s network-dropped-frame status and YouTube Live Control Room stream health. A generic upload test cannot substitute for monitoring the actual ingest connection.
  3. Separate network symptoms from local quality. Check the encoder preview and local archive, plus CPU load and encoder errors. If those are healthy but delivery to YouTube is unreliable, focus next on the outbound connection.
  4. Change one variable. If upload is inadequate or unstable, lower bitrate and consider a lower resolution or frame rate. Keep the codec-specific YouTube target and its keyframe guidance in view, then run another comparable test.
  5. Consider dynamic bitrate carefully. OBS can lower bitrate during congestion to manage dropped frames, but that does not repair the underlying connection and can reduce video quality. It is a mitigation, not proof that the route is fixed. See OBS’s dynamic bitrate explanation.

Check the Ethernet link, then the route beyond it

A wired connection still has a local cable and network port, followed by the router, ISP network, and route to YouTube. A local swap can test only part of that path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check that cable connectors are seated and the Ethernet link is active.
  • If available, test with a known-good cable and a different router or switch port, changing one item at a time.
  • Retest stream health after each change. If the symptom persists, a cable replacement has not established the cause; upload limits or a fault farther upstream may remain.
  • If outbound-connection tests show a problem, YouTube advises contacting the ISP. If trouble persists only on the selected ingest route, save timestamps and encoder logs for support rather than diagnosing packet loss without a measurement.

YouTube mentions disconnecting the primary encoder’s Ethernet cable in its instructions for testing backup-encoder failover; that is specific to failover testing, not a claim that replacing a cable resolves dropped frames. See YouTube’s backup encoder guidance.

Common symptoms and next checks

What you see What it suggests Next check
OBS network-dropped frames or intermittent disconnects The connection to the remote ingest server is unstable, or the configured bitrate is difficult to sustain. Compare total stream bitrate with outbound upload and headroom; monitor an actual test stream.
Choppy preview or local recording The problem may be in sources, encoding, or CPU load rather than the network route. Inspect source quality, encoder errors, CPU load, and the local archive.
Upload test is inadequate while others are uploading Shared use may be reducing capacity available to the stream. Repeat under representative conditions; reduce stream demand or limit competing uploads.
Issue continues after a cable or port swap The local swap did not test the entire path to YouTube. Check upload stability, collect timestamps and logs, and contact the ISP if outbound tests indicate trouble.
