If OBS’s dropped-frames counter is rising and its connection indicator is yellow or red, first check your upload connection and streaming bitrate. That is different from rendering lag or “encoding overloaded,” which point to GPU or encoder workload. An OBS update may be when the problem appeared, but that timing alone does not prove the update caused it.
First identify which frames OBS is reporting
Open OBS’s Stats dock (if it is not visible, use View → Docks → Stats) and watch the counters while streaming or recording a representative test. OBS’s Help Portal frames this as “OBS is dropping frames. How can I fix this?” and distinguishes network drops from rendering and encoding problems. OBS’s connection guide defines dropped frames in the network-specific context: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.”
| OBS symptom | What it points to | First branch to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames increasing; connection indicator yellow or red | Unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server, or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain | Stable upload capacity, configured bitrate, network route and equipment |
| Rendering lag increasing | OBS cannot composite the scene quickly enough, commonly because the GPU is busy | GPU load, game frame rate, scene complexity and output workload |
| Encoding overloaded | The selected encoding workload is exceeding available encoding resources | Output resolution and frame rate, competing workload and encoder configuration |
Do not lower bitrate as a first response to rendering lag, or lower resolution as the automatic response to a network-drop counter. Those changes target different bottlenecks. Record which counter rises, along with the OBS log, before changing settings; the right encoder or preset cannot be determined without the machine’s hardware, current configuration and log.
Compare bitrate with YouTube’s settings and your stable upload
For network-side drops, compare the configured video bitrate with upload capacity that remains usable over time—not just the peak result of a speed test. OBS suggests beginning at about 75% of total upload speed as a rule of thumb. It is not a guarantee: household traffic, Wi-Fi interference, the route to YouTube and transient congestion can reduce what is actually available to the stream. YouTube likewise advises choosing a reliable quality for the connection and testing before going live.

In OBS, inspect Settings → Output (set Output Mode to Advanced if needed) and compare the streaming bitrate with YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations below. The figures are YouTube Help recommendations for incoming livestream settings, accessed 2026-10-03; they are not proof that your connection can sustain that bitrate.
| H.264 output | YouTube minimum | YouTube recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are two separate constraints: YouTube’s recommendation is a target for the selected format, while your route’s sustained upload determines whether the stream can deliver it reliably. If the recommended bitrate is beyond your stable capacity, lower the OBS bitrate and test; if necessary, choose a lower output resolution or frame rate that fits both your connection and the content.

Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. In OBS, check Settings → Output → Streaming for rate control, bitrate, encoder and keyframe interval. Check Settings → Video for output resolution and frame rate. The exact encoder choice depends on your available hardware and workload; changing encoder brands is not a universal fix.
- Rate control: CBR, as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds.
- Codec: choose a codec supported by your encoder and YouTube workflow, then use the matching YouTube bitrate guidance. The figures in the table above are specifically H.264 recommendations.
- Resolution and frame rate: select a combination your connection and computer can sustain. YouTube supports up to 60 fps on the cited settings page and detects resolution and frame rate by default in Live Control Room.
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but that does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured input stream. Test with representative motion and audio before an event, then monitor stream health in Live Control Room while live.

Check the network route before changing the encoder
If the dropped-frames count continues to rise at a bitrate that should fit your stable upload, investigate the connection path and software that can affect it. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide recommends wired networking for streaming and lists software, drivers and hardware as possible sources of trouble.
- Try Ethernet. Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If possible, test an existing Ethernet cable and router port before buying hardware; a faulty cable, port, modem, router or network card can also cause trouble.
- Check VPNs, firewalls and security tools. Temporarily test changes only where safe and permitted by your organization. Confirm OBS is allowed through the firewall and that security software has not begun scrutinizing or restricting it.
- Look for network-prioritization utilities. OBS specifically names Lenovo Vantage and Killer NIC as examples of tools that may deprioritize OBS traffic. Review their settings if installed.
- Compare routes cautiously. A test to another streaming service can help distinguish a YouTube-specific route issue from a broader connection problem, but it does not prove which network component is at fault.
- Check drivers and equipment methodically. Consider network-driver changes, other devices using the connection, and router/modem issues. Consult your ISP before replacing equipment when the fault is uncertain.
OBS also documents optional connection controls in Windows. Network Optimizations and TCP pacing may help some users, but are not guaranteed fixes. Keep Bind to IP at Default. IPv4 Only is a diagnostic test; if it makes no difference, restore the IPv4/IPv6 default.

Dynamic bitrate can reduce the bitrate during congestion and thereby reduce dropped frames, but the image quality falls when it activates. Treat it as a fallback that can keep a stream from dropping frames under changing conditions, not a repair for an unstable network or an undersized connection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the counter is rendering lag or encoding overload
When OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload rather than network drops, focus on the work the computer must do. OBS needs GPU resources to compose scenes, and a game or other GPU-heavy task can leave too little headroom.

(Tips: Incompatible with Windows Hello)
- Cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync; reduce game graphics settings if needed.
- Close GPU-heavy applications you recognize and do not need during the stream.
- Simplify scenes, sources and filters where practical.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate if the system still cannot keep up. If 60 fps is failing, OBS suggests trying 30 fps.
Changing the base canvas resolution is usually not the first move: it can require repositioning sources and is better reserved for severe resource limits. Likewise, there is no evidence here to prescribe NVENC, x264 or another encoder as the fix without knowing your GPU, CPU, encoder availability and OBS log.
What the OBS update does—and does not—tell you
OBS says updates should leave settings intact, while noting that other system software can interfere with an update. Security software that scrutinizes changed OBS files is one possibility. Compare your current settings with the values you intended to use, check OBS permissions and security-tool rules, and note other system or driver changes around the same time.
The fact that drops began after updating OBS establishes timing, not causation. The available official guidance does not identify a particular OBS release regression for YouTube frame drops. Avoid attributing the problem to a specific update unless your logs or a release-specific report support that conclusion.
Test changes safely and isolate the cause
- Before changing settings, note the OBS version, output resolution and frame rate, encoder, bitrate, connection type, and which Stats counter is rising. Save an OBS log from the session.
- Change one relevant variable at a time. For a network-drop counter, test a lower bitrate or a wired connection first; for rendering or encoding indicators, reduce workload instead.
- Run a private or otherwise non-public test with representative movement and audio. Watch OBS Stats and YouTube Live Control Room stream health for long enough to see whether the problem recurs.
- If the issue persists, compare another network route or service where practical, review firewall/security software and network-prioritization tools, and use the log to guide the next change.
Common fixes that miss the cause
| Tempting change | Why it may not help | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Lower the resolution for every dropped-frame warning | Resolution reduction addresses output load, not necessarily a bad route or unstable upload. | Rendering lag or encoding workload is the issue, or a lower-quality format is needed to fit a constrained connection. |
| Lower bitrate for encoding overload | It does not directly free GPU rendering capacity and may leave the actual bottleneck untouched. | The network-drop counter and connection indicator point to a bitrate/connection problem. |
| Switch encoder brand without checking logs | Encoder availability and performance depend on the specific CPU, GPU and configuration. | A log and hardware details indicate the current encoder cannot handle the selected workload. |
| Enable dynamic bitrate and stop investigating | It can lower quality during congestion and does not repair the underlying network path. | You need a fallback for variable congestion while continuing to diagnose the connection. |
