YouTube Stream Buffers After a Video Ends in FFmpeg: How to Prevent the Gap

When YouTube buffers as an FFmpeg file ends, check whether packets stop at EOF. Learn how to loop one file and distinguish input gaps from ingest or output problems.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your YouTube Live stream buffers when an FFmpeg video reaches its end, first check whether FFmpeg has stopped sending packets at end-of-file. For a single video you want to repeat, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option loops the input indefinitely; put it before that input’s -i option. If FFmpeg keeps sending data, check YouTube’s stream health and your encoder settings before changing input-loop or output-recovery options.

Loop a single video continuously

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite input looping. Because it is an input option, place it before the corresponding -i:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL"

This is an illustrative command, not a tested recipe for every file or setup. Replace the output URL with the ingestion details from your channel’s YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private, and choose encoding settings that fit the media and the upload capacity available to the sending computer. See the FFmpeg documentation for the input-loop option.

To use this for a one-file loop, confirm that the FFmpeg process remains running and that packets continue after the file’s first pass. If the process exits or stops producing output at the boundary, investigate the input and command before trying output-recovery settings.

Diagnose the buffering at the file boundary

  1. Check FFmpeg’s log and process. Watch what happens when the file reaches its end. Does FFmpeg exit, pause, or keep producing frames and packets? A stopped process or a gap in output points first to input EOF or input sequencing.
  2. Check YouTube’s stream status and health messages. YouTube’s Live Streaming API exposes active or inactive status, health information, and configuration issues. Use the specific issue YouTube reports to guide the next step rather than treating the player’s buffering spinner as a diagnosis. See the LiveStreams API reference.
  3. Compare the encoder output with YouTube’s guidance. YouTube recommends CBR, supported ingest codecs, and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Choose a bitrate for the actual resolution and frame rate, and make sure the upload connection can sustain it. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult the encoder settings and bitrate table for the profile you are sending.
  4. Separate input EOF from output or network failure. If FFmpeg continues processing the input but output logs indicate a write, network, or queue problem, investigate output continuity separately. Do not use an output-recovery option as a substitute for looping an ended input.

If you are streaming several files in sequence

A single-file loop does not automatically solve a playlist transition. The cause may be how the sequence is built, a pause while the next file becomes available, timestamp discontinuities, or differences in stream parameters. Check the input and logs at the transition instead of assuming that one looping option will make a multi-file playlist continuous.

  • Identify whether FFmpeg reads one file, a concat input, or another playlist arrangement.
  • Check whether output packets stop precisely at the boundary or resume after a pause.
  • Look for timestamp discontinuities and mismatched stream parameters across files.
  • Compare the transition time with YouTube’s incoming-stream health messages.

When FIFO recovery is relevant—and when it is not

FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can attempt recovery after an output failure. Its queue behavior involves a trade-off: if the queue fills, FFmpeg can block the encoder; configuring packet dropping avoids blocking but omits packets. Use FIFO recovery only when logs support an output or queue failure diagnosis. It does not make an ended input loop again. See the FFmpeg Formats documentation for the FIFO muxer’s recovery and overflow behavior.

Encoder settings that can affect stream continuity

  • Keyframes: Use YouTube’s recommended two-second interval, and do not exceed four seconds.
  • Bitrate: Select it for the stream’s resolution, frame rate, and codec using YouTube’s current table; verify that the sending connection can sustain it.
  • Codec and rate control: Use a supported ingest codec and CBR as YouTube recommends.
  • Preflight: Test with representative audio and motion, then monitor stream health and messages during the event.

These settings help assess encoder conformance; they do not establish that a file-boundary pause is an encoding problem. First determine whether FFmpeg continues emitting packets at the transition.
