What aspect ratio should a YouTube Short use?
Use 9:16 for the familiar portrait, full-screen composition. It is a practical choice for footage composed vertically, but it is not the only eligible shape: YouTube’s upload guidance accepts both square and vertical videos. YouTube’s Shorts upload instructions and its three-minute Shorts eligibility guidance describe those shapes.

Portrait versus square
- Vertical 9:16: Choose this when you want a portrait-oriented frame and are composing for vertical viewing.
- Square: YouTube accepts square uploads too. Use it when the subject or source footage fits a square frame better; it is not necessary to convert every video to portrait just to meet the stated shape guidance.
What pixel dimensions are required?
The cited official Shorts upload guidance does not prescribe a required pixel width and height. In particular, 1080 × 1920 should not be described as a YouTube-mandated Shorts resolution on the basis of these rules. It may be used as a production choice, but the platform eligibility described here is based on square or vertical shape and duration, not a specific pixel count.

How does YouTube display vertical and square video?
YouTube’s player adapts to each video’s dimensions. The display can vary by device and video; YouTube notes that a 9:16 video may have padding around it in computer browsers. The player’s adaptation is a reason not to add bars yourself: YouTube advises against embedding black bars or padding in the video because they can interfere with dynamic sizing. Before exporting
- Compose the footage for the canvas you chose, rather than placing a smaller image inside a larger frame with black bars.
- Keep essential visual content within the actual video frame.
- Review the exported file on a phone and a computer if both viewing contexts matter to your audience.
How long can a YouTube Short be?
Current YouTube upload instructions allow qualifying square or vertical videos up to three minutes. Classification can also depend on when the video was uploaded and the type of channel. YouTube’s detailed eligibility guidance says qualifying uploads on standard channels from October 15, 2024 onward are treated as Shorts; it separately gives December 8, 2025 as the relevant date for Official Artist Channels. The page also notes an update effective September 24, 2026. Check the current eligibility details if the upload date or channel type affects your decision.
