Streamlabs Desktop vs. Streamlabs Console: Which Should You Use?

Desktop is the flexible PC option; Console is the no-capture-card Streamlabs workflow for Xbox. Compare features, constraints and costs before choosing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Streamlabs Desktop if you stream from a Windows or Mac computer and want broad control over scenes, sources, audio, recording and overlays. Use Streamlabs Console if you play on Xbox and want to configure a Streamlabs broadcast in a browser without a streaming PC or capture card. Console is the simpler Xbox route, but it has a narrower microphone setup and destination constraints; it is not documented as supporting PlayStation or Switch.

What is the real difference?

The products solve different workflow problems. Desktop is an application installed on a Windows or Mac computer. It brings game or desktop capture, camera, microphone, scenes, overlays, alerts, chat, recording and audio filters into a PC production setup. Console is a browser-configured service for broadcasting from Xbox through the Xbox Twitch app, without routing gameplay through a separate streaming PC.

That means the choice is not simply between two versions of the same app: it depends first on where the game runs, and then on how much production control and hardware you want to manage. Streamlabs describes the products and their feature differences in its Desktop-versus-Console comparison.

What you get with each workflow

Streamlabs Desktop: flexible PC production

Desktop suits creators who want to build scenes from multiple sources, such as gameplay, desktop capture, a webcam and a microphone. It also supports overlays, alerts, chat, recording and audio filters, making it the more adaptable option when your broadcast depends on a PC-based layout or production routine.

Destinations and the Xbox Twitch requirement

Destination support needs a qualification. Streamlabs’ Xbox multistream guide documents a workflow that requires Twitch, with YouTube, TikTok and Kick available as additional destinations; it explicitly says those additional services cannot be selected by themselves in that Console workflow. So do not assume Console can broadcast to YouTube, TikTok or Kick independently. The guide is titled How to multistream on Xbox to Twitch, YouTube, TikTok and Kick using Streamlabs Console.

Do you need a capture card?

For Xbox with Console, no separate capture card or streaming PC is required. For Desktop, a console owner who wants PC-based capture generally needs a capture device to route the console’s video into the computer. That setup can offer a broader production workflow, but introduces additional hardware, connections and compatibility checks. Streamlabs’ general console setup guide describes this route and names Elgato and AVerMedia examples; its examples are not a current model recommendation.

Requirements and costs to check

Desktop computer requirements

The same page has inconsistent recommended operating-system text, and Streamlabs’ quick-start material reports different details. Treat these as a prompt to check the live Streamlabs Desktop system requirements for your machine, not as a definitive purchase specification.

Console plan terms

Streamlabs’ Console FAQ, dated September 5, 2025, lists a price of $11 USD per month or $79.99 USD per year, a seven-day free trial, and says Console is included with Streamlabs Ultra. These are the terms stated on that FAQ, not a live checkout verification; confirm current pricing and trial conditions with Streamlabs before subscribing.

When native console broadcasting may be enough

If your priority is a simple broadcast without a subscription or added capture hardware, the native console broadcasting app may be sufficient. Streamlabs’ general console guide characterizes native apps as easy and cost-effective, but with limited customization and without Streamlabs alerts or overlays. Choose that route when those production elements are not important; choose Console if its Xbox workflow and features justify the subscription, or Desktop if you want PC-based control.

Keep a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos

Streamlabs Desktop and Console address live production workflows; if your separate goal is to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock by looping uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is the relevant alternative to try first: it runs continuously from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. StreamNeo is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera.
