Start with the exact Live Control Room warning, check what your encoder is sending, then measure upload capacity and compare it with your stream settings before buying equipment or changing network settings.
First, confirm which connection is unstable
This checklist applies when you are sending a live feed from an encoder and the warning appears in your YouTube Live Control Room. It is different from a viewer’s playback buffering: the warning here concerns the stream being sent to YouTube.

- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for the active stream.
- Read the stream-health message and note its exact wording and the time it appeared. The dashboard checks the incoming stream and continues to show an error while the underlying issue remains.
- Note the status color: YouTube’s error display uses red for critical errors and yellow for moderate errors. Follow the instruction attached to the specific message rather than guessing from the color alone.
YouTube’s live-streaming error guidance explains that the health indicator provides stream status and instructions.
Check the encoder before changing the network
Look at the encoder’s preview or output while the warning is active. If the picture or sound is already poor there, the problem may be in the source or the encoder rather than the Ethernet connection.

- Check the encoder’s own error indicators and whether it reports dropped frames or a failure to send.
- Watch CPU load. If the computer is overloaded, encoding may falter even with a healthy network.
- Review a local recording or archive, if available. Poor local output points toward the source, capture chain or encoder settings; clean local output makes an upload or delivery issue more plausible, but does not prove one.
- Update the encoder software if it is out of date. If the local output appears healthy but the warning continues, try another encoder as a diagnostic comparison.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder and local archive, then updating or trying another encoder if problems persist.
Measure upload capacity, not just download speed
A speed test should tell you the available outbound upload rate. A prominent download result, or the headline speed of an internet plan, does not show whether the connection can sustain the stream’s upload.

- Run an upload speed test while network conditions are representative of your normal streaming time. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate.
- Compare the measured upload capacity with the total configured stream bitrate. Include a backup stream if your setup sends one.
- Keep at least 20% of upload capacity in reserve above that total. YouTube advises that the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room.
- If capacity is too low or fluctuates, reduce the encoder bitrate or lower resolution or frame rate to a supported recommendation, then test again.
These are capacity checks, not a guarantee: a single speed-test result cannot establish that the connection will remain stable throughout a broadcast. Other people using the same connection, or uploads running at the same time, can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream. Compare the encoder settings with YouTube’s recommendations
Check the selected codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate together. YouTube’s recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution and frame rate; the H.264 recommendations below are useful comparison points, not proof that your connection can sustain them. The official table does not state a publication year, so check the live guidance for current recommendations.

Compare the bitrate your encoder is actually configured to send with the row matching your resolution and frame rate. Then compare that rate—and any backup stream’s rate—with measured upload capacity, leaving 20% headroom above the total. The recommendations are for H.264; do not apply these figures automatically to another codec. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the relevant codec and format.
Inspect Ethernet and shared network use
YouTube recommends Ethernet for live streaming from a computer, but a cable does not create upload capacity that your connection lacks. Check that the cable is firmly seated and inspect it for visible damage. Replacing it is reasonable if it is loose or damaged; a new cable is not an established fix for unstable upload capacity.

Also check whether other people or devices are using the connection for video calls, streaming, large downloads or uploads. If upload testing shows an actual connection problem, contact your internet service provider. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish that changing DNS, disabling a firewall, buying a router or upgrading a cable category will reliably fix this warning.
