If YouTube accepts a stream from OBS on your host but an encoder in Docker cannot connect, check the container’s route to YouTube separately from the host’s. A bridge container has its own network interface, DNS and routing context; OBS working on the host does not prove the container can resolve or reach the same ingest endpoint. Start with the current YouTube stream URL and key, then compare DNS and outbound connectivity from both environments before changing encoding settings.
First identify what “fails” means
The right fix depends on the stage where the connection stops. A DNS error, a TCP timeout, a TLS error, and a stream-key rejection point to different parts of the path. Record the exact error from the containerized encoder, but redact the stream key and any other credentials before sharing logs or screenshots.

- Name-resolution failure: the container cannot resolve the ingest hostname, so investigate container DNS or its network configuration first.
- Hostname resolves, but the connection times out or is refused: investigate routing, outbound filtering, proxy or VPN policy, Docker firewall/NAT behavior, or upstream filtering.
- TCP or TLS connects, but YouTube rejects the feed: recheck the selected protocol, current endpoint, stream key, TLS compatibility, and encoder behavior.
These are diagnostic interpretations, not a finding about any particular machine. The OS, Docker mode, network, endpoint, and error text determine which branch applies.

- Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the current Stream URL and stream key for the intended stream. YouTube describes the key as the value used with the stream URL to identify where it should accept the encoder feed.
- Match the protocol exactly. RTMP and RTMPS are different connection configurations. YouTube’s default display may show ordinary RTMP; if you intend to use RTMPS, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL shown for the stream rather than guessing an address.
- Update the encoder with the copied values. Treat the stream key like a password: do not paste it into public logs, issue reports, or screenshots.
- If a third-party encoder will not start, YouTube’s general troubleshooting guidance suggests generating a fresh stream key and updating the encoder.
For an RTMPS SSL or certificate error, verify that both the selected protocol and server are RTMPS. YouTube suggests trying port 443 for that case. For a connection-timeout message, its guidance is to check the server URL and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. Use the endpoint currently shown in Live Control Room; do not substitute a guessed generic hostname.

Compare DNS and outbound reachability from host and container
Use the exact hostname and port in the current YouTube ingest URL. Check name resolution from the host and from inside the running container, then check whether each can open a TCP connection to that same destination and port. Do not compare different endpoints or ports: that can make a healthy path look broken, or hide the actual difference.
- Record the host result. Resolve the ingest hostname and test the destination port from the same host environment where OBS works.
- Repeat inside the running container. Use the container’s available DNS and connection-testing tools, or an equivalent diagnostic method for its image. If those tools are absent, use a temporary diagnostic container on the same Docker network rather than assuming the encoder’s failure is a DNS failure.
- Compare the results. A hostname that resolves on the host but not in the container points toward container DNS or network configuration. A resolved address with no connection points toward routing or egress policy, among other possibilities. A successful connection shifts attention toward protocol, endpoint, key, TLS compatibility, or encoder behavior.
- Keep the test credential-free. DNS and TCP reachability checks need the destination hostname and port, not the stream key. Never include the key in a command transcript shared for help.
Docker’s bridge-network documentation says bridge containers have their own network context and normally use masquerading to access external networks. A host success therefore narrows the comparison but does not identify the cause by itself.

Check Docker’s network mode and host policies
Before changing configuration, note whether the container uses the default bridge, a user-defined bridge, host networking, Docker Desktop, a custom network, or a network affected by a VPN or proxy. Also note the host OS and Docker Engine or Desktop setup; networking and firewall behavior can differ across these environments.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Review DNS and route configuration. Compare the container’s resolver and route with the working host path. A mismatch is a lead to investigate, not proof that DNS or routing is the only problem.
- Review firewall, forwarding, proxy, and VPN policy. On Linux, Docker warns that bridge containers may lose internet access if Docker firewalling is disabled without replacement rules. Check with the system administrator before changing managed rules.
- Do not flush firewall rules or disable protections as a diagnostic shortcut. Confirm what manages the host’s forwarding and egress rules, and make any policy change deliberately.
- Do not add a published port as an outbound fix. Docker port publishing (for example,
-por a Composeports:entry) forwards traffic from a host port to a container port. It is generally for inbound access to a listening service; it is not normally required for an encoder in a bridge container to initiate an outbound YouTube connection.
Bridge mode normally provides external access through masquerading. Host networking shares the host network namespace on supported configurations, but changes isolation. Neither mode is a universal fix: choose based on the actual OS, Docker mode, security requirements, and network policy.

Check bandwidth only after the connection path works
Once the container can reach the ingest endpoint, check sustained upload capacity if the stream connects but stutters or drops. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth beyond the total stream bitrate. Shared networks can also limit the bandwidth available to an individual device. Bandwidth is a more relevant lead for an unstable connected stream than for a DNS failure or immediate connection refusal.
Consider HLS only if the encoder and workflow support it
YouTube HLS ingestion is a separate setup: it requires an HLS-capable encoder and the HLS URL and stream key provided for that setup. YouTube describes HLS as using HTTPS POST/PUT and having higher latency than RTMP because it sends video segments. It can be an option when the encoder supports the required workflow, but changing to HLS does not solve missing container DNS or outbound routing.

Troubleshooting checklist by symptom
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| OBS connects on the host; container cannot resolve the hostname | Compare host and container DNS configuration and Docker network settings. |
| Container resolves the hostname but cannot open the destination port | Review routes, outbound filtering, proxy/VPN policy, Docker firewall/NAT behavior, and upstream policy with the administrator. |
| RTMPS reports SSL or certificate trouble | Confirm the selected protocol and server are both RTMPS; YouTube suggests trying port 443. |
| Connection times out | Verify the URL copied from Live Control Room and confirm encoder RTMPS support if using RTMPS. |
| Connection opens but YouTube rejects the stream | Check the protocol, current endpoint, stream key, TLS compatibility, and encoder behavior; if the third-party encoder will not start, consider YouTube’s suggestion to create a fresh key. |
| Stream connects but stutters or drops | After reachability is established, check sustained upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth margin. |
What to include when asking for help
If the checks do not isolate the failure, provide the host OS, Docker Engine or Desktop version, container image, Docker network mode, whether a proxy or VPN is involved, the exact sanitized error, and host-versus-container DNS and connection-test results. Share the protocol and port being tested, but redact the stream key and other credentials. Without those details, the root cause cannot be determined from OBS working on the host alone.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running rather than diagnose an encoder in Docker, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops uploaded video from the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with the first day free and no card required. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
