If your YouTube stream starts dropping after you change video encoders, compare the encoder’s actual output settings first, then verify the YouTube destination and stream key. Check Live Control Room health and your encoder’s statistics before changing bitrate or other settings: network drops and encoding overload have different causes, and the timing alone does not prove the codec is at fault.
1. Compare the encoder’s actual output settings
Record the old and new values; preset names alone do not tell you what the encoder is sending. Check the protocol, destination URL, video codec, output resolution and frame rate, bitrate mode and value, keyframe interval, and audio codec. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest with H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video. Its encoder guidance recommends CBR, up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
Use the bitrate row matching the incoming codec, resolution, and frame rate. These are YouTube Help’s published ingestion recommendations and minimums, not guaranteed settings for every connection or encoder.

Values are YouTube Help’s recommendations (minimums in parentheses, accessed 2026). Its table also includes 480p and 360p; consult the current YouTube encoder settings table for those modes. A switch from H.264 to HEVC or AV1, or a higher resolution or frame rate, can change the applicable bitrate recommendation. Higher resolution and frame rate also increase encoding workload.

For SDR, YouTube’s guidance also specifies progressive scan, square pixels, CABAC, and Rec. 709. Do not carry SDR assumptions over to HDR: YouTube specifies HEVC for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.
2. Verify the YouTube stream destination and key
The stream URL and stream key are separate settings: the URL routes the encoder to YouTube, while the key identifies or authorizes the feed. After changing profiles or stream setups, open the intended stream in Live Control Room and compare both values with those in the encoder. YouTube notes that resolution and frame rate are normally detected automatically; manual resolution selection is associated with a custom stream key and manual settings enabled.

- In Live Control Room, open the intended stream and locate its stream settings.
- Compare the displayed stream URL and key with the encoder’s destination fields. Do not reset a key unless there is a reason to; if you reset it, update the saved key in the encoder.
- If you need RTMPS, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL from the URL field; YouTube says the default display may show ordinary RTMP. For an SSL error, verify the protocol and host use RTMPS. YouTube suggests trying port 443 for that specific SSL-error scenario.

3. Use the symptom to distinguish network drops from encoding overload
Network dropped frames or bitrate collapse
OBS describes dropped frames and disconnections as connection-to-ingest symptoms when the connection is unstable or cannot maintain the configured bitrate. Check the encoder’s network statistics and Live Control Room health, then compare the stream’s bitrate with the stable upload capacity available on that connection.

- Try a wired connection if you are currently on Wi-Fi. A cable can help test whether the wireless connection is involved; it will not fix an incorrect codec, key, or URL.
- OBS suggests lowering video bitrate to suit stable upload capacity. Its reference to 75% of total upload speed is a starting point, not a guarantee or a YouTube-specific requirement.
- Check whether a VPN, firewall or antivirus, network “optimizer” software, network drivers, router, modem, cable, or other network device is interfering. If those checks do not resolve the connection issue, OBS advises contacting your ISP.
- OBS dynamic bitrate can lower the bitrate during congestion, but it does not repair the underlying connection and may reduce picture quality.

“Encoding overloaded” or render/encoding lag
This points to computer performance, not necessarily the upload path. OBS recommends freeing GPU capacity, simplifying scenes, and reducing output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not working, its guide suggests trying 30 fps. Check resource use and rendering or encoding lag before lowering network bitrate.

- Change one meaningful variable at a time and record the value, so you can identify which change affects the result.

- Wait for the Live Control Room preview, then check stream health and messages while monitoring the encoder’s output statistics.
- Allow setup time: YouTube’s live tips advise configuring encoders at least two hours before an event and starting them at least 15 minutes beforehand.

5. Compare encoders by their output and headroom
No encoder is established as universally best for YouTube. When choosing between available encoders or profiles, compare whether each can send a supported protocol and codec, meet the bitrate recommendation for the actual resolution and frame rate, hold that rate on your stable upload connection, and run without render or encoding lag on your computer. Confirm that each profile uses the intended RTMP(S) destination and key.

YouTube live-stream checks beyond encoder settings
Passing an encoder test does not establish that every video is safe to stream or eligible for monetization. Check that you have the necessary rights to the video and audio, and review YouTube’s channel monetization policies for reused-content rules if monetization matters. These are separate from diagnosing an RTMP connection drop.
