A YouTube RTMP or RTMPS timeout from an Indian-hosted server does not, by itself, prove that the hosting provider blocked the port. First copy the current ingest URL from YouTube Live Control Room, confirm your encoder supports the selected protocol, and test the specific outbound connection. If YouTube reports an RTMPS SSL error, its guidance recommends checking the rtmps URL and trying port 443. Then ask your host to check egress policy and routing for that destination and port.
What to check first
Work from the endpoint toward the network. A wrong URL, an encoder that cannot use RTMPS, a reachability problem, and insufficient upload capacity are different issues; one symptom does not establish which one is responsible.

- Copy the current endpoint. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream settings and reveal or copy the server URL and stream key. If you intend to use RTMPS, deliberately retrieve the RTMPS URL: YouTube notes that the default display may show an ordinary RTMP URL. Use the hostname and path shown for your stream, not an example endpoint. YouTube: encoder settings and RTMPS.
- Check the encoder configuration. Confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS if you selected it, and that the URL uses the correct scheme and hostname. Use the stream key associated with the same Live Control Room setup. If RTMPS continues to fail, check the encoder’s documentation for its RTMPS configuration.
- For an RTMPS SSL error, test port 443. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance gives an RTMPS URL with
:443as an example, or says to set port 443 in the encoder’s port field. Preserve your actual Live Control Room hostname and path; do not copy the illustrative hostname. This is a documented troubleshooting option for the SSL-error scenario, not proof that every endpoint or configuration uses the same port. YouTube encoder settings. - Read a timeout cautiously. YouTube advises checking the RTMPS URL and encoder support when a connection times out. A timeout alone does not prove that a firewall blocked traffic.
- Check encoder and internet status. Review the encoder’s connection status and verify that the server has outbound internet connectivity. YouTube’s network troubleshooting guidance says to contact the internet service provider when connection issues are found; for a VPS or dedicated server, contact the hosting provider. RTMP and RTMPS are not interchangeable settings
RTMPS is a secure extension of RTMP that uses TLS/SSL. YouTube currently recommends RTMPS, but the URL and settings must match what the encoder supports. If the encoder is configured for ordinary RTMP, switching only a port number is not the same as configuring RTMPS. Use the exact endpoint displayed in Live Control Room and follow the encoder’s protocol-specific instructions. YouTube encoder settings.

Ask the hosting provider to investigate a specific outbound connection rather than asking only whether “YouTube is blocked.” Provide the destination hostname copied from Live Control Room, the protocol and port configured in the encoder, and the UTC time of a reproducible failure. Request a check of outbound egress policy and routing to that destination and port.

- Record the server IP and hosting region.
- Record the exact YouTube hostname, protocol, port, test time in UTC, and encoder error text.
- Ask whether outbound policy permits the connection and whether the provider can identify a routing or filtering failure.
- Where possible, repeat the same configuration during the same test window over an alternate network, such as a laptop connection. Record that the DNS resolution and network route may differ, so it is a useful control rather than a perfectly identical path.
A successful speed test does not prove that the target port is reachable. Conversely, a port connection that succeeds does not prove that the server has enough sustained upload capacity for the stream.
Separate reachability from bandwidth
Measure available upload capacity and compare it with the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom and says to account for the primary stream, any backup stream, and that headroom. This is capacity guidance, not a firewall test. YouTube also recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds in its encoder settings. Those settings can matter to stream configuration, but they do not establish whether a hosting provider blocks outbound traffic.
How to compare two network paths
Keep the encoder, stream key where safe, protocol, destination hostname, and test window consistent. Compare the observed outcomes rather than relying on a single timeout:

- Whether the encoder used RTMP or RTMPS and the exact destination port.
- Whether the TCP connection and, for RTMPS, TLS setup succeeded.
- The outbound network or provider used for each attempt.
- Upload capacity and any packet loss or interruptions observed.
- The encoder’s connection status and exact error message.
Do not publish or send a stream key in an unsecured support ticket. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Live Control Room before using it again.
What to conclude—and what not to conclude
Without a provider statement or reproducible test identifying the destination, port, and failure point, it is not established that an Indian hosting provider blocks YouTube RTMP or RTMPS. The practical conclusion should follow the evidence: fix an incorrect endpoint or unsupported protocol first; if the configured connection still fails, ask the host to investigate outbound policy and routing for the precise destination.
