If your YouTube 24/7 stream repeatedly disconnects from a shared VPS, bandwidth contention is one possibility—not a diagnosis. The useful test is whether the VPS can sustain enough outbound bandwidth for your stream at the times it fails, with headroom. A peak speed test cannot rule out short periods of congestion, an unstable route, encoder trouble, or another network issue. Start by checking encoder statistics and timestamps, then compare the stream’s total bitrate with sustained outbound capacity.
What bandwidth contention can—and cannot—explain
A stream may drop when its connection to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS says network-dropped frames can indicate trouble along the path between the encoder and ingest server, and that excessive dropped frames may lead to disconnection. Neither a drop nor a successful speed test identifies the VPS host as the cause. The problem could be the host, route, encoder, or another part of the network path. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide and YouTube’s network advice describe these constraints.

It also warns that network sharing may limit an individual connection. For a shared VPS, that makes contention plausible, but the reviewed official guidance does not quantify how often it causes 24/7 stream failures or establish that any particular provider is oversubscribed.
1. Check whether the encoder reports network drops
First separate network symptoms from rendering or encoding problems. In OBS, open View > Stats and note dropped frames (network), rendering lag, and encoding lag while the stream is running. Names and presentation can vary by OBS version. Save the OBS log for the failure period and note the exact time of every disconnect or burst of dropped frames. OBS’s guide explains how to interpret dropped frames and other connection problems: Stream Connection Troubleshooting.

- Network-dropped frames: investigate the connection to the ingest server, outbound capacity, and route stability.
- Rendering lag: investigate whether the system can render the scene at the configured resolution and frame rate.
- Encoding lag: investigate encoder load, encoder settings, and available VPS resources.
These categories point to different lines of investigation; do not treat every “dropped frame” counter as proof of bandwidth contention.
2. Record the stream settings and compare the bitrate
Write down the codec, resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio bitrate, and whether bitrate is constant or dynamically adjusted. Compare the total bitrate—video plus audio—with stable outbound capacity available to the stream. YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations below are encoder guidance, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can sustain the rate or that every scene needs precisely that bitrate. The table is from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, reviewed in 2026.

YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. OBS offers a separate troubleshooting rule of thumb: begin with a bitrate around 75% of total upload speed. That is OBS guidance, not a YouTube guarantee or a substitute for measuring capacity during the failure window. Codec-specific recommendations differ; use YouTube’s current table for the codec and output mode you actually select.
3. Measure sustained outbound capacity during the failure window
Measure outbound throughput and stability from the VPS while the stream is running, especially at the times disconnects usually happen. Compare those observations with the configured total bitrate and the headroom you need. A short test or peak result measures only a brief interval; it does not establish that enough bandwidth remained available throughout a later failure. This concurrent-check approach follows from YouTube’s upload-bandwidth and shared-network guidance and OBS’s emphasis on a stable connection.

Where practical, keep a timestamped record of throughput, packet loss, latency, stream bitrate, and YouTube stream-health status. If your VPS provider offers network graphs or bandwidth statistics, record the relevant interval and the instance’s region and network details. A single average can conceal a brief capacity dip that coincides with a disconnect.
4. Run a controlled lower-bitrate test
- Save the current encoder settings and the time of recent failures.
- Reduce the video bitrate enough to create clear headroom against the outbound capacity you observed. Keep the codec, destination, and other conditions steady where practical so the comparison is useful.
- Test with representative audio and movement rather than a static screen. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and note the test’s start and end times; YouTube recommends representative testing and reviewing status messages in its encoder settings guidance.
- Compare network-dropped frames and disconnects with the original settings over comparable conditions.
If the lower-bitrate test stays connected, that supports a bitrate-capacity or connection-stability hypothesis. It does not prove that the VPS provider is contending for bandwidth: a route, transient network condition, or other change could also explain the difference.

5. Treat dynamic bitrate as a mitigation, not a repair
OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. That may help preserve continuity, but it can lower video quality and does not fix the underlying network problem. OBS explicitly frames dynamic bitrate as an option when the underlying connection issue cannot be resolved. Use it as a mitigation or diagnostic aid, and keep investigating the connection rather than treating adaptation as proof that the VPS is healthy. Details are in OBS’s troubleshooting guide.

Before attributing drops to shared-host contention, check the parts of the setup that apply to your VPS and encoder. OBS lists several possible causes; some are desktop-specific, so use only the checks relevant to your environment.

7. Escalate with evidence, not just a speed-test screenshot
If the measurements point toward the VPS network, send the provider a concise incident record. Ask whether outbound bandwidth is capped or shared, whether they can inspect congestion at the failure times, and whether they can provide host-side network data. A “dedicated” label alone does not establish uninterrupted YouTube streaming; check the actual limits and terms.
- Exact disconnect and dropped-frame timestamps, with time zone.
- OBS or encoder logs covering the affected intervals.
- Resolution, frame rate, codec, video and audio bitrate, and bitrate mode.
- Timestamped outbound-throughput observations and, if available, packet-loss or latency data.
- VPS instance and region details, plus the YouTube stream-health messages seen at the time.
- The result of a controlled lower-bitrate test and what changed between runs.
Only consider a different VPS plan or provider if the evidence indicates host-side capacity or route trouble. Compare measured sustained outbound throughput, stated bandwidth caps and traffic allowances, shared-versus-dedicated network terms, route stability to YouTube ingest, region, access to useful support data, and cost. No provider-specific policy or plan can be inferred from the symptoms alone.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep an encoder running on your VPS, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; video streams as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
