“RTMP handshake failed” means FFmpeg did not complete the connection setup with YouTube; it does not identify the cause by itself. Start by checking the current server URL and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room. Then make sure the URL scheme matches the selected endpoint (RTMP or RTMPS), your FFmpeg build supports that protocol, and your network can reach the destination. Check the connection log before changing video settings: bitrate, resolution and codec are not established generic fixes for a handshake failure.
Fix the connection in this order
- Copy the current server URL and stream key. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s settings and copy the server URL and stream key for that stream. Replace any old values in your FFmpeg command or configuration. Do not paste the key into a public post, screenshot or unredacted log. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions identify these as the values to enter.
- Match the scheme to the endpoint. If YouTube provides an RTMPS server URL, use that RTMPS URL; do not change it to RTMP or combine an RTMP scheme with an RTMPS endpoint. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and states: “Both the protocol and the server should be
rtmps, not justrtmp.” FFmpeg documents RTMP and RTMPS as separate protocol variants. - If the log reports an SSL error, verify the RTMPS URL and port. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting recommends checking the URL and suggests specifying port
443for applicable SSL errors. Use the server address actually supplied for your stream in Live Control Room; an example hostname in documentation is not necessarily your ingestion endpoint. - If the connection times out, check support and reachability. Confirm the installed FFmpeg build supports the selected protocol. Check whether a firewall, proxy or network policy is blocking the destination or selected port. YouTube’s timeout guidance specifically calls out the server URL and encoder support; checking local network rules is a diagnostic step, not proof that the network is at fault.
- Read the complete connection log. Capture the FFmpeg version and build configuration, plus the lines immediately before and after the failure. Redact the stream key and any credentials before sharing them. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes URL components and options; exact options can vary with the version and build.
- Change encoding settings only if the connection succeeds but the stream then has a different problem. A handshake is a connection phase, not a test of picture quality. The sources do not establish bitrate, resolution or codec changes as general handshake remedies.
Tell RTMP, RTMPS and HLS apart
| Ingestion route | What it means | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP | Use an RTMP URL and an FFmpeg build that supports the RTMP variant selected. | When the stream configuration supplies an RTMP endpoint and your setup is intended to use it. |
| RTMPS | RTMP over TLS/SSL; use the RTMPS server URL supplied for the stream. FFmpeg treats RTMPS as a distinct protocol variant. | When the stream configuration supplies an RTMPS endpoint. For certain SSL errors, YouTube says to verify the URL and try port 443. |
| HLS | A separate YouTube ingestion route with its own compatible encoder setup and stream configuration. | Only when your workflow supports HLS and the YouTube stream is configured for it, such as a use case needing capabilities unavailable through the encoder’s RTMP path. It is not a universal fix for an RTMP handshake error. |
Do not switch protocols simply because one sounds more secure or because a handshake failed. Select the route supported by the stream configuration and your encoder, then use its matching server URL and protocol. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance recommends RTMPS and notes HLS for supported workflows where RTMP-path capabilities are unavailable.

Check the FFmpeg output configuration safely
For RTMP-family output, FFmpeg commonly writes an FLV stream to the supplied ingestion URL. The following is a shape example, not a universal YouTube endpoint. Substitute the exact URL and key provided for your stream, and verify options against your installed FFmpeg version:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv "<SERVER_URL_AND_STREAM_KEY_FROM_LIVE_CONTROL_ROOM>"
Do not copy the angle-bracket placeholder literally. In a real command, construct the destination from the current server URL and stream key according to the URL format YouTube provides; keep the key private. If your setup uses a configured output URL rather than a command-line URL, apply the same checks to that field. The input and encoding options above are illustrative: they do not diagnose or repair a connection handshake.

Use the error stage to choose the next check
- Failure immediately on connection or handshake: recheck the active endpoint, key, RTMP/RTMPS scheme and protocol support first.
- SSL/TLS complaint: confirm that the server URL is the RTMPS URL for this stream. For applicable SSL errors, try the YouTube-recommended port
443if it is not already being used. - Timeout or no response: confirm the URL and RTMPS support, then check firewall, proxy and network reachability to the selected destination.
- Handshake completes, but YouTube reports an ingest or stream-health issue: treat that as a later-stage problem. Review the subsequent FFmpeg and YouTube messages, then check the relevant stream configuration and encoding requirements rather than treating it as the same handshake failure.
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation and its RTMP implementation identify handshake completion as a protocol state. That confirms the stage involved, but the error text alone cannot distinguish a wrong key or URL from a scheme mismatch, unsupported RTMPS, TLS/port trouble or network reachability. No published statistic in the cited official materials establishes how frequently each cause occurs.
